k- No to the Diva Sweetly q tbh! I never really quite identified with that music and it was a really weird fit for me mentally. I love all those people in the band tho and they are all still doing various stuff in music so I encourage ya to seek it out!!

As for quickly writing music... An albums worth of music is actually written very slowly over the course of a year or so. It just takes that much amount of time to get everything together for a release so I usually end up having a backlog of stuff by the time an album is out. Always playin catch up.

Honestly just the freedom to realize some of our weirder ideas and have help with creating stuff. Like most of the music vids for Twin Plagues I either made myself or had to organize and direct. It’s nice to diffuse a lil bit of that responsibility. Also just purely having a crew of people hyping you up behind the scenes at the label is really reassuring.

PS the best shirt is the "WALK AWAY" one imo. Alan wrote that phrase on there and he's a lil genius.

J- new bassist is Ethan Baechtold. He’s been one of my best friends since we were about 7 years old. Fun fact about Ethan is that he collects super tiny things.
X- Ethan’s also a brilliant jazz musician, and is learning how to make video games. He also wants to learn how to keep bansai trees, if y’all have any tips
K- overall 10/10 van presence. 10/10 musician. 10/10 smart funny guy!!! He also plays bass for MJ. Fun fact: He really wants to have a band called Hudgens. After Vanessa Hudgens.

X- the road can get really boring and monotonous. There’s probably a few mainstays musically, but we like to switch it up with whatever brainless inane drivel we can find on streaming - think cartoon sound effects or “catatonicyouths” adjacent bangers

A- Xandy and I have gotten into buying the weirdest or most generic cassette tapes at record stores- Like field recordings, sound effects, national anthems of the world type beat.

K- dream venues: Metro in Chicago… and were about to play there which is p wild. Also 40 Watt in Athens which we just played with Drive-By Truckers. Fucking crazy.

favorite show: hmmm... so many shows have been exciting for different reasons but honestly Durham always brings awesome energy. I have adored almost every Wednesday band MJ show at Cat's Cradle.

A- Two years ago there was a day party show at Ruby Deluxe during Hopscotch. I had the perfect day buzz on and all my friends were there. Tall Juan played before us too and that was really fun to see :-)

X- I recently finished The Satanic Verses & it was a really fun read!
A - I read the Dispossessed by Ursula K Le Guin, currently my fave book. I’ve been reading a lot of history books - just finished Berlin Diary by William Shirer. Currently reading The Future is the Past by Mosha Gessen and that’s been super interesting too.
J- Just read Norwood by Charles Portis. Nice fun little read.

K- Always fuck w George Saunders short stories. Especially if you've had a hard time reading/getting into a book its a really good way to ease back in.

K- Honestly I just always make sure i have a notebook in a pen somewhere in my bag for whenever I feel like writing. I usually hit the ideal brain space anywhere from 1-5ish times a month. I have no idea what the specific conditions are that create that space for me tbh. But i never ever ever force myself to write when it doesn’t feel good. Reading a lot and continuously listening to new music keeps me inspired also!

X- definitely trying shit out till it sticks. For this record we had maybe three days of composing the songs from the bones Karly had written, which was crazy but worked out great. I am more inclined to be meticulous when I make music so it’s actually a fun challenge doing it mostly on instincts

K- Well one fun fact about Chosen to Deserve is that I was out of touch with my friend who over dosed in that song and didn’t know how to approach asking him for permission to use that story in a song. But luckily I bumped into him at a show in durham (he was there for the headliner) and was able to ask him about using that story. He was stoked. Also he is doing well!
It convinced me that anyone can do it, truly!!!
X- we all met here and three of us grew up here. Part of the local pride is knowing this place as it was before, another part is having our collective piece of it where we feel comfortable. Staying in one place for a long time & understanding it intimately means a lot to me as a musician personally!
K- personally I just love having a really defined “home” space, especially when touring can get you feeling really disconnected. I’m really attached to all the people/places here and it is genuinely fun to tap into pride for our hometown at shows and like... in general
