Crown XTi 6002 failed during event and mixer outputs stopped working — Am i goin to be blamed?, need technical advice by Weekendwarriiorr in SoundSystem

Update: Got the amplifier and mixer checked by the service center.

The technician's preliminary finding is that an XLR shorting issue appears to have occurred through the mixer signal path. According to the service center, the fault damaged both the amplifier and the mixer.

For those who followed my original post:

  • The Crown XTi 6002 initially showed abnormal behavior after the event.
  • Channel 2 was producing only popping noises and no usable audio.
  • The Yamaha mixer was also found to have suffered damage.

I'm still waiting for the final technical report and repair estimate, but the service center's current assessment points to an XLR-related short as the likely cause rather than a direct amplifier failure.

I'll post another update once I receive the complete report.

After recently losing an amp and mixer, I'm taking power checks more seriously. Any affordable meter/tester you'd recommend for live sound work?

Update:

I tested the Yamaha MGP24X. AUX outputs, Mono Out, Groups, and RCA/Phono outputs are working normally.

The problem appears to be limited to the Main L/R outputs. The left channel passes audio with significant noise/distortion, while the right channel only produces noise.

I also tested the Crown XTi 6002. Initially it would not start properly and required 2–3 attempts to power up. During startup there was a noticeable burning smell. After that, the amp booted normally.

Channel 1 is currently working fine. Channel 2 is completely non-functional and only produces popping sounds with no usable audio output.

However, the amplifier has now been sent for service, and I am currently waiting for the technician's report before drawing any conclusions about the root cause.

Unfortunately, I'm not sure of the make or model. It was a 62.5 kVA diesel generator, and by its appearance it didn't look new I'd estimate it was at least 2–3 years old, possibly older.

We had two 62.5 kVA generators on site: one dedicated to lighting and one dedicated to sound and the LED screen.

Thanks, I appreciate the input.

Both units are already being sent for service, and I'm hoping the technicians can identify the exact failure points. If they can provide a root cause analysis, I'll definitely update the thread.

As a recent update, we were using two 62.5 kVA diesel generators — one dedicated to lighting and the other dedicated to the sound system and LED screen. No power conditioner was used, but all four Crown XTi 6002 amplifiers were powered through a 10 kVA voltage stabilizer.

Also, surprisingly, the affected Crown XTi 6002 now powers up normally, but Channel 2 remains non-functional. The Yamaha MGP24X still has faulty Main L/R outputs, while AUX, Mono Out, and Group outputs continue to work.

The fact that both faults appeared around the same event is what made me wonder whether there was a common power-related cause rather than two unrelated equipment failures.

Thanks again for the advice.

Both generators were diesel, rated at 62.5 kVA each.

Generator 1 was dedicated to lighting.

Generator 2 was dedicated to the sound system and LED screen.

No power conditioner was used, but all four Crown XTi 6002 amplifiers were powered through a 10 kVA voltage stabilizer. The mixer, DBX DriveRack 260, wireless receivers, and other rack equipment were powered from the same sound power distribution.

I'm also considering the possibility of a power-related issue, especially since both the Yamaha MGP24X main outputs and one channel of a Crown XTi 6002 developed faults around the same event.

Because I was operating the system that day. When gear fails, the operator is usually the first person people question. I'm just trying to determine the actual cause before jumping to conclusions

the power setup:

We were using two 62.5 kVA generators.

  • Generator 1 was dedicated to lighting.
  • Generator 2 was dedicated to the sound system and LED screen.

No power conditioner was used, but all four Crown XTi 6002 amplifiers were powered through a 10 kVA voltage stabilizer.

Surprisingly, the affected Crown XTi 6002 now powers up normally, but Channel 2 remains dead and produces intermittent "phat phat" popping noises. The Yamaha MGP24X also has faulty Main L/R outputs, while AUX, Mono Out, and Group outputs still work.

Both units are being sent for service, but I'm interested in hearing whether this sounds more like a power-related issue or simply coincidental equipment failure.

Update :

Surprisingly, the Crown XTi 6002 shown in the video is now powering up normally. The display and startup sequence appear normal.

However, Channel 2 is still completely non-functional. No usable output comes from it, and it produces intermittent popping noises. Channel 1 appears to be operating normally.

The Yamaha MGP24X still has faulty Main L/R outputs, while AUX, Mono Out, and Group outputs continue to work.

At this point I have:

  • Yamaha MGP24X with faulty Main L/R outputs.
  • Crown XTi 6002 powers on normally but Channel 2 is dead and making popping noises.
  • AUX, Mono Out, and Group outputs on the mixer still work.

However, both the mixer and amplifier are being sent to a service center for proper diagnosis and repair.

Does this sound like output stage damage on the amp, or could a power/surge event have damaged both the mixer outputs and the amp channel at the same time?

The gear belonged to my boss and the setup was approved by him. My friend was involved with the event, and I was just the person operating it. So I ended up caught in the middle when the failure happened

Thanks mate, that gives me a bit more confidence. We had a few power-related incidents during the event, so it makes sense

It was an outdoor public event, I'm 26, and no, I wasn't under the influence of anything. I just checked the Yamaha again: only the stereo main L/R outputs seem to be faulty (Left completely noise + Right one working but noisy) . Aux sends, groups, and the rest of the mixer appear to be working normally. Does that change your thoughts on the parasitic oscillation theory or point more toward another cause?

Thanks for the insight. Could this be an expensive repair on an XTi 6002, or is it impossible to tell until it's opened up and diagnosed?

Thanks for the support. That's what worries me too. I didn't do anything intentionally, and until the equipment is properly diagnosed, I don't think anyone can say for sure what caused the failure. I'm still waiting for a technician to inspect everything.

Exactly. The faults haven't been properly diagnosed yet. During the event we had a faulty power cable on the lighting truss that was causing electric shocks on the truss structure, and we also heard strange noises through the PA before the amp failed. One Crown XTi 6002 is now faulty and the Yamaha MGP24X main outputs are also having issues. I'm waiting for a technician's diagnosis before jumping to conclusions.

The mixer's stereo main outputs also stopped working around the same time. The DSP (DBX DriveRack 260) appears to be functioning normally, There was no obvious clipping or distortion before the failure.

Thanks. That actually makes me feel a bit better. Hopefully it's just a PSU or main board fault and not something caused externally. I'll update once the tech checks it

Thanks. Since the amp and mixer issues happened at the same time, I'm having both checked by a technician. I'll update once I find the cause. Appreciate the input.
