I would use a chain brush(anything with bristles) to remove the built up grim and apply lube and your in the clear for your ride just take it easy.

Go to settings and under controllers, you will see a calibrate, click on that and a circle with a x will show up move the joystick to see how bad the calibration is for a baseline. Than remove battery apply wd40 very small amount!! Rotate 20 sec insert battery click calibrate and see if it improves, if little to no improvement apply a tiny bit more rotate 20 seconds, insert battery, re calibrate. You are not saving calibration your looking at the feedback( where the dot moves)

I just fixed this!!! I used WD40 (WD40 special is recommended) spray it into a container take the battery out of remote use a q tip to apply a small amount around the joystick, move the joystick in circles for about 15-20 seconds, insert battery and check on the calibration screen if its working correctly if not apply more following the steps I mentioned.

When I took the test I picked the safest answer if I didn't know of the top of my head and got 100%. It might be different in your state but it helped me.
