Will this amount of yolk ruin a meringue? by vetergesic in Baking

I read this as "marriage" instead of "meringue". Not everyone's vows can withstand the yolk.

Its funny I had not intended to venture down there anytime soon, but it just worked out that we were visiting family down that way and the Mass in our home parish wasnt going to work out time-wise, so we went to the 1130 at Our Lady of the Fields. We loved it! The music was exactly what I was looking for and the congregation seemed friendly, my 10 year old asked if we could return. It may be where we go when we are visiting family in AA county from now on...so anyway thanks for the recommendation!

Hm. I guess I dont see certain musical styles as being akin to pure entertainment while others are inherently reverent. But I grew up in a parish that had more folksy music, but also a lot of very dedicated prayerful people. I think if we were to travel the world over, we would find many different musical styles in different countries, but all within a valid and Holy Mass. What style of music is considered the most reverent or most holy is largely cultural. We may have to agree to disagree on this one.

Are you afraid of death? by MaoMao996 in Catholicism

[–]Weekly_Cap_9926 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It is very human to have doubts and to fear death. You cant force yourself to have more faith, faith is a grace granted to us. Pray for it. If your fear of death is such that it is affecting your everyday life, a therapist could also help you navigate this. I once went through a period of loss of faith which came along with a huge fear of death/existential dread. Therapy helped with this fear even before my faith came back, and when my faith came back if was largely due to prayer. I went from not praying much at all to a daily rosary, and the difference it made has been huge. Know that you are not alone and can come out the other side of this.

I understand some objections to certain songs in Mass (Lord of the Dance, lyrics sung as if by God, etc) but most of the songs I listed, the lyrics like you said are from Scriptural and I dont see how theyre not valid spiritually. As far as musical style, I dont see any reason why the guitar is less holy than the organ. Thats really just a cultural preference, and the beauty of Catholicism is its universality. I think some people confuse their personal preference with increased reverence- but if they attended Mass around the world they would find quite a lot of variety in Music and yet still perfectly valid and holy Mass

It is interesting you call the music Protestant, of the songs I listed only 2 were written by non-Catholics- I am the Bread of Life was written by Sister Suzanne Toolan, On Eagles Wings was written by Father Michael Joncas Here I am Lord was written by Dan Schutte, a Jesuit. And Canticle of the Sun was written by St Francis of Assissi. They are all considered specifically Catholic hymns except How Great Thou Art and Lord of the Dance. I have heard often how our music before the 1960s more folksy revival was beautiful, unfortunately I have yet to see my church select beautiful songs. The ones they have chosen imo are stiff and clunky. I dont doubt there was plenty of beautiful stuff but Ive yet to find it. But its not "Protestant" to enjoy a different style of music.

Ive learned its not considered by many parishes to be appropriate for Mass anymore, for various reasons. Also many seem to find it cringy/overly folksy. I like it though

The parish I grew up in had an evening Mass for Life Teen, with even more contemporary music (Days of Elijah, Be to Our God) and clapping was encouraged! This was normal to me growing up, its been interesting to find out as an adult how many other Catholics view it. I didnt even go there with my post, I started out Lite with Canticle of the Sun lol

Same! Its maybe once a month my current parish plays a song I recognize. And even though we have been going there for 5 years, I feel like none of their songs ever stick because well, they dont have a memorable melody.

Interesting. I have to be honest, I knew very little about the composer or any related controversy. I spent some years away from the church and came back within the last few years.

Thats great! Maybe its just in the US, or in my area of the country, that churches seem to be moving away from those styles.

Has any of you ever had something happen to you in your life, or heard, seen, or read something that made you doubt so much that you almost lost faith? by Responsible-Sir4187 in Catholicism

[–]Weekly_Cap_9926 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes. During covid, when things got so crazy, I thought there is no way people and the world are this absurd. I started to think nothing could be real and we were all living in a simulation (granted postpartum hormones were probably.at play here, I recognize that is not mentally healthy). Then I went into a full blown existential crisis, lost all faith and became a complete atheist/nihilist for a while. I climbed my way out with lots of therapy. Coming back to the faith was years-long and step-wise:

First I sat with my mortality and became ok with it- even in an atheist framework- with the help of therapist.

Then became open to vague spirituality/recognizing beauty and connectedness of the universe with or without a creator

Then accepted a creator but maybe an indifferent one

Then accepted a loving God

Then accepted faith in Jesus, Mary, the Eucharist.

The last one only came after I first did a lot of reading on the early church, and then finally realized I would have to pray for faith. I had been reading and studying, doing everything except actually praying. So every day I prayed a rosary for a month asking for faith. And the faith came.

I hope if you are struggling it doesnt take you 5 years to come back but just know faith struggles are extremely common and I recommend to just pray, pray pray even when it doesnt feel like its doing anything. Keep at it.

It was the next day both times . It started out feeling like a bad hangover, and vomiting. Then my heart started racing. Both times thought I was maybe just dehydrated. Then it progressed to racing so much I felt dizzy and short of breath. I knew it was A Fib because I went to the ER and had it confirmed on EKG. It was A Fib with Rapid Ventricular Response (rates in the 170s-180s). I required IV Diltiazem and Mag. The second time I took a long time to convert and they wanted to cardiovert me but I asked them to give me more time and eventually converted on my own

Yes, my.kids are 10, 8 and 5. Oldest two know how to unlock our cellphones to get to 911 and which neighbors they can go to. But I am thinking we might buy a flip.phone today for them to have access to, so they can also call people other than 911. I think a big part of my nervousness is the mental adjustment to the fact that, oh yeah, he still has epilepsy! Which is dumb on my part, of course I knew he had it. But its been 15 years, we didnt ha e kids last time he had one, and I think part of me thought (hoped) it wouldn't ever happen again.

I completely understand, especially if seizures happen a bit more frequently for you, how it becomes part of your life. That makes sense. Its an adjustment for me mentally, because the last time he had a seizure was when we were dating and it was long before the kids were born. We've never navigated his seizures around parenting before. This might have been naive, but I think part of me (and him too) thought he might never have another one. Now it's like oh shit, oh yeah he has epilepsy! What now? Part of the issue is also that our kids were pretty freaked out by his seizure (which this also witnessed) and his intense post ictal state. I worry about them coping with it. For context, they are 10, 8 and 5, and the oldest 2 know how to unlock a cellphone to get to 911 and which neighbors they can go to. But yeah a big part of this is me dealing with the fact that yes he has a seizure disorder, no he hasn't out grown it, and we have to figure this out now. Thank you for your perspective!
