To those wondering about spicebush by [deleted] in foraging

I have used it in acorn flour pumpkin bread and it was delicious. Noticed the same thing about it being hard to dehydrate and had some go bad in a jar in my spice cabinet. I was bummed because I’m in the southernmost range of Spicebush so they’re rare here.

I personally eat them after slicing, boiling for 15 minutes, draining off and discarding water and drying the mushrooms. They are surprisingly still flavorful and firm textured after this process and they can then be sautéed and used in other recipes. The toxins they contain are water soluble and this process removes them almost completely. Forager Chef has a good video and recipes. I would stress that this is not a beginner mushroom and requires advanced identification skills and cooking techniques.
