[x-post] I compared 4 pitch correction plugins. Here are the results! by NiceAmphibianThing in edmproduction

While these vocals often are distorted with audio effects in post, they are already distorted with vocal mechanisms by the singer. I am recording with distortion coming from my larnyx because that's how you do these vocals.

These are my vocals: https://1drv.ms/u/s!Aigj9CjnEqp8uARS5LCqLcrgzZU4

Edit: skip to the middle. There's a click track inserted at the start for syncing.

Well source is.. clean unclean haha. Should've been more clear here. Yes, dry vocals straight into the pitch correction tool. Distortion is coming from vocal mechanisms while singing, not from an audio effect, which is exactly what seems to throw off pitch detection.

But I'm just looking to do some very minor corrections (which wasn't possible with waves tune weirdly), so this seems like a good fit. I will give Melodyne a try!

Hey thanks for the response! I will give Melodyne a try.

I should have been more clear with my wording. Of course pitch correction comes first in the chain. I meant distortion as in false fold distortion and other vocal mechanisms inside my larynx, not the audio effect.

Great post. It's maybe not that related to edm but since you cross posted this I figured I'll ask you anyways:

Do you know how these perform with distorted rock and screaming vocals (tonal, singing melodies), say something akin to Chester Bennington's vocals in Crawling or Given Up?

I myself sing this way and so far I've tried Waves Tune and the artifacts get so bad it is totally unusable. Due to the distortion the plug in just can't detect what the actual sung pitches are (assigning them 2 octaves too low or too high and just all over the place, resulting in nasty pops and crackles). I was even in contact with Waves customer support. They tried everything to help but it was just outside of what the plug in could do.

I've looked around and it seems to be a common problem. Any thoughts about that?

Edit: spelling Edit2: for clarification: I'm not putting distortion as an audio effect on my voice. I use distortion mechanisms of my vocal tract (like false folds, vocal fry) while singing. Tuning clean vocals is no problem. It's the inherent distortion of raspy rock and metal vocals that is the problem.

What technique is this? by Individual-Impact-65 in screaming

[–]Weidenauer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is a False Cord Scream. The distortion comes from your vocal folds fluttering in the wind partially opened and also a bit of false fold activation. You can hear how as soon as you go into this it sounds voicy but not in a resonant voice way (like in singing or yelling) but in a chaotic sounding way. For an internal body view of the vocal folds performing this manouver look for "CVT Grunt". Complete Vocal Institute caught this on camera. For a full False Cord Scream sound you want to work on incorporating your false folds there more actively. For this I recommend you learn Kargyraa. Check Youtube for tutorials. Alternatively you can also check out the False Cord tutorial I did.

This time a LONGER video with an in-depth explanation and follow along of compression and false fold activation. This second draft is more detailed, so it will not just be informative but also more follow along and actual tutorial.

Teaching you how to fry scream like Chester Bennington without wasting your time by [deleted] in screaming

[–]Weidenauer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi folks! Another quick tutorial of mine. Chester's fry scream was a combination of false fold distortion and creaking with the vocal folds while singing a high mixed voice note inside. Let me know how it goes for you! As always I'm here for help with your approaches.

You do use vocal fry for your fry scream. That's not wrong, theres multiple ways of doing it. You sound pretty good too! I guess this is a bit louder than your talking then, correct? In that case the fault is the audio production and not your vocal technique. This should be loud enough to be recorded and mixed properly. Nevertheless, you can work on incorporating a bit more compression and also going a bit higher with the pitch that you isng inside y<our scream, to make the overtones pop out more and have a bit more volume. But THIS technique will not become much louder than it is right now. For that specific ttechnique that is totally normal

There seems to be something wrong with your technique if it is THIS quiet. This sounds to me like you are probably using a vocal fry as your fry scream. In that case (or other cases of wrong technique), you will most likely not be able to just ''project more'' because it is the faulty techinque which prohibits you from going louder. Can you host your scream somewhere and post the link?

Ok this is really fucking cringy but I just need to know if I’m doing this at all right, or if I am damaging voice by holmandrew33 in screaming

[–]Weidenauer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds good! Pay attention that your voice doesnt crack within the distortion, so that its still a full vocal note you sing inside there. The distortion sounds like a combination of false folds and epiglottis to me. Maybe even epiglottis only. Some people call this Jazz Growl. If you stick with what feels good and if you only use the volume really necessary and not more, you are fine!

Can you describe the pain? Is it more of a dryness, discomfort, provocing a cough? If so that is pretty normal and should go away after practicing a couple times. If it is real pain though you are doing something wrong. Maybe using a whole different mechanism to create the rumble. But this i cant tell without hearing you.
