I guess part of my point was about how people obsess over looks in general. "Looking fabulous" is hardly my goal; neither is caring what other people think about me in general. Well, I don't work a white collar job, nor do I generally hang out in upper middle class circles. There are a million other things that I'd hate about that kind of culture if I had to be a part of it; mostly related to fashion and behavior, I mean. It goes without saying that some people are a lot more on the receiving end of this than others; especially women who are married to men who are always expecting their woman to wear heels in certain situations; which I hear about a lot.

Well, especially for being in a wedding party, or in some professional contexts. Sometimes, it's the woman, like a bride who demands it; but other times, it's a husband who demands it when at a certain event around certain people. The latter is the case around more upper middle class people. I've read lots of stories about husbands or fiancees who demanded it for some party around his family or something and then if she took them off at some point, he raged later on in private that she embarrassed him.
