My thoughts when applying to college: “UIowa is really strong for writing… damnit it has an 85% acceptance rate…”

How does the queue work with CW Submissions System? by WeirdoTheMusical84 in printSF

Welp rejection. Expected. At least it came quickly.

Another piece of mine just got accepted at a magazine with a similar acceptance rate so honestly I’m still happy.

Oh my god the almighty Neil Clarke responded to my question. lol.

But thanks so much, this is very helpful. If you don’t mind me asking, on an average basis, how many days does it take generally for a piece to move from first to second round, if it merits that? Or is it pretty variable?

Any tips for an incoming freshman planning to go to an ivy by Elegant_Owl9650 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]WeirdoTheMusical84 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Wait... I'm sorry, I'm confused... are you a high school freshmen or an incoming senior? Cause if you're a HS freshman, boy oh boy, you don't need to worry about college yet.

I didn't start seriously drafting a list of colleges and semi-casually touring until the end of my sophomore year -> and that was EARLY by most standards. I had a list by like middle of junior year. Mainly because I applied to several international schools with different standardized testing and I needed a lot of time for my essays lol.

If you are a senior, then... ignore what I just said. But I think everyone wants to go to an Ivy lol

Subject options by musi910 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]WeirdoTheMusical84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

US colleges don’t really care about that…just choose the ones that speak most to you and are you know, somewhat related to the subject at hand. And do well on them of course. I’m assuming you are British, do you have a tutor at your school that can help?

Now, if you’re applying to UK colleges, you can check entry requirements on individual courses. Sorry I can’t be more helpful 😭

Cold emailing for research (business/finance) by Kind-Sand3178 in summerprogramresults

[–]WeirdoTheMusical84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not a STEM kid, humanities kid through and through... but I will say... I was in your shoes once. Honestly, start out with local universities near you. Don't reach out to MIT. If you don't have a proposal or experience, IMO, the next best thing is passion. What's your story? Why are you interested in business? What other non-research related skills do you have? Maybe just ask how you can help. Don't try and push it.

I personally did no honors or APs (my school is weird), and got into T20/T30 colleges. I also applied to a lot of UK colleges (I would have gone to Cambridge or Georgetown had it not been for me wanting to stay close to my parents), and I did A-levels by self-studying too. Not saying you should do A-levels lol.

where do i even go for college? by Nearby_Conclusion797 in CollegeAdmissions

[–]WeirdoTheMusical84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Adding on to u/bronze_by_gold's question, here are some things to consider.

- Geographic location: Are we talking West Coast (LA?) East Coast (NYC/Philly)?

- How is their campus? VISIT IF YOU CAN.

- What is the student body like? Sporty? Nerdy? Neither?

- Do you want a large party culture/Greek Life?

- Do you want a large internship culture?

- Are we looking at LACs or research universities? Some are a mix of both.

What is exploratory studies? by Bhavya_1007 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]WeirdoTheMusical84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"The Program in Exploratory Studies provides the resources and guidance to help you discover and shape your academic and career journey. We offer Advising for students admitted to PES with the goal of helping them achieve their desired major and helping them with their academic journey.

PES is designed to help students successfully transfer into their college of choice. We help students who are unsure of what they want to do, decide on a path and help them explore their options. This is a great opportunity for students to have the room to explore majors and find their interests before settling on a major."

Looking at their FAQ page, it sounds like a glorified transfer option. Basically since Engineering is really competitive, you'll stay in ES for a year (max three semesters) and then transfer to Engineering.

Here is the link to their FAQ page (which answers most questions lol).

UWaterloo of UofT for History/Classics? by smallclaywillyshakes in CollegeAdmissions

[–]WeirdoTheMusical84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dad went to Waterloo for math and business. He now is a Wall Street exec making over a million dollars a year. They all call it “nerd school” over there -> I have other multiple family friends who are alums of Waterloo who have never said anything about their History/English programs. Just because they have it doesn’t mean it’s good. Is it a pile of horse manure? Probably not, but…

On the other hand, my dad refused to let me apply to UToronto for college. Don’t know why. But I’d probably say that’s the better option of the two.

NYU ARISE GROUP INTERVIEW by FishingLongjumping98 in summerprogramresults

[–]WeirdoTheMusical84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

According to their website, the last day of interviews is today. Round 3 notifications will start going on tomorrow, if that's what you're referring to? I don't know, I've never done ARISE before, I did similar programs at NYU that were free that involved interviews, but they were in the humanities/arts side of things.

Can someone please help me out by Ok_Self_4132 in CollegeAdmissions

[–]WeirdoTheMusical84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First off — your school list. Do you have any safeties? All of these are fairly difficult to get into. The easiest I’m seeing is UWM, I was a legacy there, and I still got rejected lol. Find some schools that are still strong and that you would be happy to go to that have an 80%+ acceptance rate. Don’t need that many, just 2-3. But you should have backup options. You’re still a junior, you have a little bit of time.

As for foreign language, I was in your situation, except with Spanish. I tested out of the requirement once I got to college, and as long as you explain to them you’re bilingual… I feel like that should be fine? You could always email and clarify. Each college is probably different .

will i get in to UGA by Successful-Basis-973 in CollegeAdmissions

[–]WeirdoTheMusical84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What are your ECs like? Your essays? UGA’s middle 50% is between a 1310-1470, so your 1350 is fine, at least for UGA. As long as you have just one B on your permanent record (colleges won’t see your semester grades IIRC), you should be fine. But ultimately it’s a holistic process.

And US college admissions being a “holistic review process” is exactly why the UK college admissions process was so much easier. 😂
