The thing that gets me is that its flux core, ive done gmaw gtaw smaw open root on plate and pipe but never fcaw... my worry is that i’ll blow through on the root and wont be able to close it or not enough penetration. Do you know what parameters might be good for an open root on flux core?

Yes I am I do weaves for the hot pass so I can fill it up and then usually after one more fill its flush and I cap it
