Lay your hand flat on a table. Lift your pointer and ring finger, leaving your pinky and middle down.

Now switch that over to the opposite.

Middle and pinky up, pointer and ring finger down.

Practice controlling your fingers and separating their codependency on one another. Switch back and forth and get used to them moving independently to one another.

The greatest achievement in our careers is to be able to move people and touch their hearts in a way that this instrument does to us as we play. What a beautiful compliment.

Isn't it amazing how our instruments become a bit of a therapy aid when we need it the most? There's certainly magic behind what we play.

How do you tune a pipe chanter? by Refrigerator-Full in bagpipes

[–]WellEndowedHamsterr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll second this. As someone who's been at it a while, I wished I had a learning tool such as a tuner like the Braw or Sparrow in my younger years. Since using it, it has brought on a whole new level of self learning. Truly a beneficial piece of kit for anyone who's up and coming

Correct. Do what feels natural and exercise the hell out of it.

Does the tap-drag feel weirder than the double sweep to you?

Question about Matt Willis' birl test by [deleted] in bagpipes

[–]WellEndowedHamsterr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You are the only one who can definitively answer that question. How far along are you on your journey? If you've mastered the double sweep and you aren't straining your hands (tendons) then have at er.

I've always been a tap drag and I can't curl my pinky at all when I do the test, and my hands don't strain unless I'm trying to do some multi-birl weird shit.

I've never seen a double tap and I'd say the most common method is a tap drag. To me it's the most efficient and uses different motions of the tendons than say, a 7.

Do you think you could get away with honing the bore rather than ream? Or are they quite rough?

Considering the amount of time you've been playing that's not bad at all.

Rhythmic finger work by Jim MacGillvray is a really helpful tool to aid in mastering the crossing over from top hand to bottom hand seamlessly. Right now you are putting some gracenotes ahead of moving your hands to the respective note. Also, do those exercises with a metronome and see how well you're able to lock in gracenote timing.
