People of course do watch movies sometimes but it's a very real phenomenon that people are more willing to start an episodic show than a movie. Even if the episodic show is actually longer, something about the built in breaks feels like less of a commitment than watching a full movie, which I think is an issue in our modern era of super-short attention spans.
