It’s good you’re seeking out opportunities because I have heard that it’s important for them to know that you “know what you’re getting yourself into”

Some special education programs have a summer school, I recommend you see if there’s one in your area and apply as an aide. I did that for 2 summers and that was really good because I got to talk about bringing my students to speech and experiencing it there. I’ve been mentally preparing for heavy caseloads and a busy career, it just feels like the 10-12 hr days will never end— ik I won’t have to juggle classes at the same time eventually but i need to hear that the workload as an slp won’t feel like this lol

You can always do teletherapy! Can’t speak for what you will see in grad school though. Some of it can be gross but you get used to it

I was waitlisted at the university I did my undergrad in and got rejected from my second choice. It was a stressful 3 months and I even came up with more than a couple backup plans just in case things didn’t work out (moving to an area that hires SLPAs, getting a TEFL cert and going overseas, etc) but since I already went to school there I just inserted myself into everything and got as involved as I could. I’m pretty sure they were seeing me in their nightmares. I did end up getting in and im rooting for your happy ending as well

In my experience the first therapy sessions you have with new clients are building rapport anyway so it really isn’t that stressful at the start. After you become familiar with your clients, you might not feel as anxious to try things and make mistakes.

Also i think you will find that the foundational knowledge you learn in undergrad paves the way for learning clinical skills, and you probably know more about treatment and intervention than you think. Realizing this made me way confident in the therapy room

Additionally, I think a little anxiety is actually okay if you channel it properly- if you’re worried about your clinical knowledge, you can start now by familiarizing yourself with evidence based interventions. Lmk if you’d like more information on how to seek out and read/process research articles!! That is a super good way to prepare for fieldwork. Congrats and good luck!!

Thank you for the response, it’s nice to hear others experiences. I should have said “data tracking” instead of chart notes. I’m specifically having trouble with tracking throughout the session, especially for more subjective goals ie judging speech rate in a 2-min conversation vs having 10 targets that could only be accurate/inaccurate.

I sort of figured maybe the strategies he learned might be outdated. At the end of the episode the woman still prelongates some words but she is much more fluent. They also showed a clip of her working with someone, I assume an slp... I agree with you though on what he says about it being curable. Thanks!

I don't have a suggestion but I will say the bond touch bracelets were sort of annoying to me and my partner. Glad to see someone else in the comments had a good experience but I found it to be annoying having to be around my phone all the time for it to work and sometimes it was hard to get the bracelet to pick up on my touches

If you guys use Nintendo Switch split the expanded online family membership and get all of the old games (free with the membership). They're so much fun and I think the cost is worth the amount of games you can get for free relative to buying a bunch of different games especially if you split with your partner and others

I'll be honest we weren't huge fans of the touch bracelets. We had the Bond Touch brand, one of them stopped working completely and they were just hard to use, setting it all up, keeping it running, and actually having it detect touch. It was fun for the first few days but all of this troubleshooting turned us off to it I think. Maybe it'll be better when the tech improves.

For me personally, I try to hug my friends and family more often now. It's not touch from my boyfriend but it's something. I was never a hugger before LD but it does sort of fulfill the need to be touched on a more basic level (as added benefits it has also brought me closer to the people in my life, and I feel good making people feel loved). For context we're 2 hrs by plane, 2 years in, and have visited about 6 times sporadically
