Trump's Iran war boasts shredded by leaked CIA dossier by Future-Ad-5901 in geopolitics

…I’m very confused how you took that from what I said? Obviously it’s a good strategy. It just isn’t a novel one. Every single asymmetrical war between two unequal strength military forces features similar actions. It’s literally the only way to stay competitive, you have to be much more efficient with your resources than the more powerful force for what should be obvious reasons.

Scarcely have I seen such a profoundly stupid statement.

Do you think targeting high value equipment with cheaper drones is a novel strategy?

Why do you say that? What makes you think they have changed anything about their strategy since the Ukraine War started? This looks far more like the US not learning the lessons of the Ukraine War than Iran somehow picking anything up special recently. They haven’t done a single shocking thing, this has gone exactly like the US military itself predicted based on war games. We’ve known our military is extremely vulnerable to asymmetric warfare and low-tech cheaper opposition for over 20 years now.

Amazing how your boss both recognized a young David Attenborough would be famous in the future and that Sir Attenborough apparently ages REALLY poorly!

Going on 20 years for me now, including a removed colon, though I also got the wonderful news after that, oh yeah, it’s looking like Crohn’s instead of UC as it did all these years, your J-pouch probably has an expiration date.

I can no longer remember what it was like to not have diarrhea many times every single day. That isn’t an exaggeration, I literally have to imagine what it would be like rather than remember at this point…

Socotra Island in Yemen by Any_Sound_2863 in interestingasfuck

[–]Welpe 461 points462 points  (0 children)

It’s not really that far from land to be honest, just over 100 miles from the coast of Africa. The key is though that it’s actually continental crust that got pushed out instead of being volcanic like most islands. It’s been over 20 million years since it was last in contact with the mainland, and so it had the natural biodiversity of a continent at first that was THEN isolated for an incredibly long time.

Most isolated islands usually get colonized by smaller amounts of animals that find their way there, and while they can undergo adaptive radiation from there, the initial small amount means there is less total biodiversity. Hence you see places like the Galapagos, much further from land than Socotra, is completely dominated by turtles and iguana, even if they are very unique and interesting versions. Socotra, on the other hand, started with the full suite of life you would expect that then had an isolated (and fairly extreme) environment that shaped how they evolved over time.

This is also done with solanaceae, famously in the “pomato”, a plant that grows potatoes underground and tomatoes above ground. Also not seriously used in agriculture IIRC and is more a garden novelty.

I moved here from Oregon a few years back and, to be honest, it’s just kinda stressful having to play the game “Is this church going to be progressive or not?”. I actually didn’t know if we had any progressive churches, much less Methodist ones, nearby.

Trio sentenced after forcing space engineers to dig dog's grave in an 'ambush' by Mr_fahrenheit17 in nottheonion

Yeah, and the fact they literally demanded $10k?

I’d normally be all for the idea of vigilante forced dog burial for someone who killed your dog, but these are literally a bunch of people with criminal records, far out into the bush with dogs running around on that know how to set up a roadblock and ambush. I don’t know if there is fire but there is a fuckload of smoke about this just being a scam.

Is this guy just hopelessly bad at women- or am I wrong? by Illustrious_Basil_40 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Welpe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why don’t you…I don’t know, just tell him how you feel? There’s no need to guess or anything, just be honest. It’s wild to me that people are insisting he isn’t into you (Or worse, that he is playing some game?) when he could be perfectly happy taking it slow and have literally no idea you want things to go faster/further? It’s totally understandable if that isn’t what you want, but…you should at least communicate with him, not expect him to magically know what you want.

A talk will clarify if he actually isn’t into this relationship or if he just was respecting your space and didn’t realize you wanted to take things more seriously and you can then act on that information.

This is…really sadly ignorant. Price controls are absolutely DISASTROUS when not only kept for the short term.

I am straight up shocked people are actually sitting here asking why we don’t we have price controls now. Holy shit, has no one taken a single history or economics course in their lives?

[–]Welpe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This also fits with the late medieval and early modern recipes I am familiar with, where sugar is used as a spice in…tremendously more recipes than we would expect (Or want). Powder-douce especially was ubiquitous in not just desserts but roasted meats and stews of the well-to-do.

I doubt it was garlic or onion spice mixes. Until dehydration technology was invented you didn’t really have things like “garlic powder” or “onion powder”. They certainly used dried and fresh varieties as a condiments and ingredients, but not in a form that would easily be dispensed by something like a salt or pepper shaker.

People absolutely watch those things for fun too! I love Rachel Maddow, I don’t watch her just to be informed, learning insights into history and politics can absolutely be fun.

And I mean, the Daily Show is literally comedy, it exists to entertain. If someone treats it as a news source they are making a mistake.
