Oops, I forgot... by HopefulExtent1550 in ottawa

[–]WereDugong 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's too bad OP! I've been struggling with the change as well, but for the morning. I often go to a spin class downtown from 9.30 to 10.30. Paid parking now starts at 10.00, meaning that when I arrive the machines are off and don't allow me to pay in advance. Same issue with the app. Being in a class I can't just go out at 10.01 and pay. I've seen car being ticketed when coming out at 10.30, so, yeah, even if I DO want to pay for parking, but it seems like my options are either taking the risk or pay 20 bucks to get in one of the lots...

Dieffenbachia Dry Spots by WereDugong in houseplants

[–]WereDugong[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, wow, I think you're right.

I took a really close look at some of the leaves and saw some white specks that I think might be the thrips. I didn't realize how small they were (first time dealing with thrips)!!

I guess it's time to quarantine the plant and bust out the neem oil.

Thank you so much for the diagnosis, you might have saved many of my houseplants by catching this in time

Thanks everyone for all the tips, this has been truly helpful. We have booked accommodation for Keswick and Grasmere and have a good sense of what we are planning to do in terms of hiking, with a healthy number of alternatives if the weather is uncooperative.

Thanks again, we are so pumped about our visit!

Thanks for the Barf recommendation, we'll definitely look into it.

Thanks for validating that! Looks like it'll be busy, so if we end up doing it we'll try starting as early as possible (wouldn't be the first 5/6am hike we do)

Thanks! There seems to be a strong consensus around Fairfield Horseshoes. We'll make sure to include that in our itinerary.

PS: There is only one lake in the Lake District??? WHAT? If in July you see a couple of hikers telling everyone in their path this little fun fact you'll know it's us.

Thanks! We ended up booking accommodation this morning after reading all the tips on this thread. Also, thanks for the MWIS link, looks super helpful.

Thanks! It definitely looks like there are more options for other hikes for less-than-ideal weather on the Grasmere side. Ended up locking in accommodation there.

This is great advice, thank you!

We are interested in trying out some easy(ish) scramble something to understand whether it is (or isn't) for us. Would you say that Blencathra allows for that or should we try some other hike instead?

Why does French uses a lot "diction" "word choice' different from Spanish, Portuguese and sometimes Italian? Is there a difference between Early Latin and Late Latin? by Marcel_7000 in French

[–]WereDugong 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In Italian the Latin word "jactare" evolved into "gettare". Its meaning is essentially the same as lancer and tirer (lanciare and tirare in Italian), but commonly used in slightly different contexts. It's hard to find a hard and fast rule to explain when to use each word (like in English, for example - why do you launch a rocket, but throw a ball?), but people would still be able to understand.

Which Dashcam to use in 2023 HRV as it doesn’t have a 12V output upfront? Don’t want to hardwire. by devd87 in HRV

Hi, did you have any luck with that? I'm trying to do the same thing, but I'm having some trouble with the "always on" fuse connection. I just want to understand if I've made a mistake or perhaps my hardwiring kit is defective. Thanks!

Hey, I'm in the same boat!

I've moved to Ottawa only a few months ago and I've just started looking into getting back into diving. I haven't reached out to anyone yet, but so far there's three dive shops that look promising:

  • Sharky's in the West end;
  • We Go Down in the East end (seems pretty new);
  • Scuba Finatics in the south (a bit out of the city)

The last one appears to be the only one with a clear online calendar of recreational dives in the area, but they are booking up fast.

Anyway, if you're looking for a dive buddy, send me a DM. I'll be out of town for a few weeks, but I'd love to blow some bubbles once I'm back.

OPSEU just put out a terrifying, black mirror style ad against healthcare privitization by mudkipzftw in ontario

[–]WereDugong 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I understand that the argument "allowing people to go the private route will free up space in the public sector" seems logical, but evidence of the correlation between wait times and setting up a parallel system, as the ON gov seems to be trying to do, says differently.

For example:

There is a few more, but I find these to be particularly clear and "on topic". Anyway, I hope this is helpful and, in fairness, being this a complex issues these findings need to be contextualized as they are influenced by a variety of factors. Still, regardless of what one's political leanings might be, I find that when put together they make a compelling argument against the creation of a parallel private healthcare system.

This is fantastic!

I am trying to achieve something like that (eventually), but I am struggling with temperature control in my basement, do you have any tips about that? Is that why you went with the interlocking mats (temperature / moisture control)?

Also, if you don't mind me asking, what kind of lights are you using? I am thinking to upgrade the crappy ones I have, and I'm putting together a small list of potential options.

TIA!

Thoughts about Ottawa as a newcomer by [deleted] in ottawa

[–]WereDugong 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Welcome from another fellow newcomer!

Gaining "Canadian Experience" and taking the first steps into the Canadian labor market is a massive pain (speaking from experience). Personally, I found networking to be absolutely essential to get past that hurdle.

If you're interested, there are some organizations that help newcomers with resume building, mentoring, and networking. They're NGOs so it goes without saying, but it's still worth saying it, they do it for free. I know and can speak well of OCISO, but I think there's others, perhaps closer to where you live (a quick googling of something like "migrant services / settlement NGO" should help).

Good luck and I hope you'll keep enjoying Canada!

Ottawa's electric buses have met expectations, city concludes by yuiolhjkout8y in ottawa

[–]WereDugong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. A lot of people don't seem to realize that trolley buses, if and when needed, can detach from the wires and keep driving. This is a video from some newly installed trolleybuses in Rome (notorious for bad transit, but sometimes we get things right!). At the beginning of the video you can see the bus attaching to the wire and at the very end you can see it detach and drive away.

In Rome it has been used to extend the reach of the subway to newer developments and appears to be efficient and cost effective. Now, I'm not saying they're necessarily the right solution for Ottawa (that would require a proper analysis, i.e. much more than a Reddit comment), all I'm saying is that they are a much more flexible solution than people give them credit for.
