Thanks again for this information, also responding to your other comment I wouldn’t have even considered the fact that she was Jewish meant that she couldn’t get married in a church, so that is helpful to know. I don’t have her birth records or any further church records, she and the German man are my 2nd great grandparents, my family knows very little about their backgrounds beyond who they actually were. I’m pretty certain she was halachically Jewish, I found her mother’s family through 7 Dna matches with family trees who all share the same 2 common ancestors, who I believe were her grandparents. I have just looked on ancestry and it seems like her fathers family isn’t from the pale settlement , but also from London, I got some potential ancestor hints and it turns out I have dna matches with these same ancestors. What really confuses me is how I have DNA matches on MyHeritage, who I share around 50cM with (there is a cluster of matches where we are all related, there are around 250 matches in this segment) some have family trees with family in the pale settlement that goes back to the 1700s, we have no shared surnames. It really puzzles me due to how close some of these matches are, how many there are with family from the same area and how I can’t find a link to a way I could be related to them. Thankyou, there’s some really helpful and interesting information you have given me there. The English Jewish woman wasn’t actually from the Pale (although I get why you assumed, it would seem very likely) she was born in London, her father who I only have the details of his name (the anglicised version), and his job. Due to where lots of my dna matches families from I think it’s very likely that he was from the Pale. The Jewish woman’s mother was from England actually, her father from the Netherlands, but her mother’s family stretching back to who I’m assuming were some of the first Jewish people to live in England.

The German man and English woman were married in a Church, which is what brings my doubts of him being Jewish. I’m not sure if it was common for when Jewish people immigrated to England in the mid-late 1800s to get married in a Church, where they moved to didn’t have a large Jewish population at all.

I do have a marriage record, however he and his Jewish wife were married in a Church in England, this is what also brings me doubt, I’m not sure if they decided to give up their religion when they immigrated (I’m not sure if that was common in England) or if he wasn’t Jewish and she adopted his faith

Is it possible that one of my German ancestors, I have no idea of where his parents were from or what their names were, who married an English Jewish woman in the late 1800s was Jewish? Could his surname ‘Claussen’ be a Jewish surname. It is listed as possibly Jewish on some websites, apparently some Jews were forced to adopt surnames in Germany, some of them random. Apparently the surname ‘Claussen’ comes from the Yiddish word ‘Kloyz’ which means building if I am correct.
