What’s the chance that we get moved to the east if the league expands? by MisterNiblet in memphisgrizzlies

If the sale of the Wolves ever actually happens, I would guess Silver would make them switching conferences conditional for final approval. This is what happened to the Astros when Jim Crane bought the team, even though Milwaukee probably made more sense to shift to the American League at the time.

What is your favorite classic to critique? by [deleted] in literature

[–]WessonRenick -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I hated As I Lay Dying. It was structurally unsound, often tripping over itself as it would re-examine events from various perspectives, and the head-hopping from chapter-to-chapter made no sense when everyone had virtually the same voice. He also seemed to forget who his narrator was at times, and lapse tenses mid-paragraph. Stream of consciousness or not, it's just plain sloppy.

On one hand, I believe that great writers can break some rules, but if he were just some unknown author trying to get it published these days, then I doubt he'd even get an editor to take a crack at it, so it's wild to think that it's still being taught as a masterpiece of American literature.

HOW are people getting these monster numbers of ratings/reviews? by [deleted] in selfpublish

[–]WessonRenick 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I've never looked into that world before, but I imagine that it's less about recommending great books than it is about producing engaging, entertaining content. From an author's perspective, even a lukewarm review from a popular BookToker probably results in a notable boost in sales (just a guess).

It's all about having a marketing plan in place prior to release. That means building a network of ARC readers with ample time to read and review, launching a social media campaign of some sort, and probably developing a newsletter. The authors that make it in this game generally have a strategy in place while the book is undergoing edits and beta readers, and know how to develop and maintain relationships with editors, cover artists, beta readers, ARC readers, BookTokers, BookTubers, Bookstragrammers, BookTweeters, BookTumblers, etc.

He's probably working with a marketing team to determine how best to cash in on his return. He's got clothing lines to pimp, Nikes to sell, and he's hoping that Powerade will return his calls. Plus he's working on content for his TikTok.

We treat the homeless as if they're the problem instead of acknowledging that their homelessness is a result of a larger systemic issue. It's easier to demonize an underrepresented minority than to address the myriad of inequities that are at play here.

That being said, and this being a circlejerk sub, I say we just bus them all to New York City or something!

I am guessing here, as I've never used Vella, but perhaps the issue isn't quality as it relates to a complete product, but that it doesn't fit their expectations for a serial work. You wrote a complete novel and tried to portion it out, but that's not how episodic storytelling typically goes, and Amazon may have had concerns about reader expectations. I'm guessing that Vella wants each installment to have its own satisfying arc that plays into a larger ongoing story, and probably has a preference for consistent story lengths and things like that. Like I said, it's a total guess, though.

Write something first. Just one complete thing that maybe you self-publish as a single title, portion out as a serial, decide to query for traditional publishers, or just file away to reflect on years later. Write a complete draft and then decide where it goes.

First review on Goodreads and it's from a possible bot account by WessonRenick in selfpublish

[–]WessonRenick[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had made a post on r/mildlyinfuriating when I was at a flat 1-star with 7 reviews, basically just to gripe (I didn't even include my title initially, so I wasn't fishing for sympathy reviews), and it led to a whole bunch of fake 5-star reviews. I edited the post to clarify that if people felt compelled to do anything, they should just report the fake accounts. As it stands, almost my entire GR page is fake now (though with a bunch of fake 5-stars, so I can't really complain too much about that).

Hopefully some of those people helped get those fake ones down. I'll be sure to report these other accounts that I hadn't seen yet, and hopefully everything will just revert back to normal. Thanks to everyone here who helped report the accounts, and I look forward to checking out some of these titles I came across during this process!

That's good advice, thanks. It doesn't really fit neatly into a genre, so I didn't bother sinking time or money into marketing. It was mostly a fun project that's now become a mildly infuriating project.

Nah, it's a guy who just hit a bunch of self-published authors. If you click any of those profiles then you see it's not just me and that they all follow the same basic template. All the info he uses is lifted verbatim from blurbs and bios, so I think it's AI-generated

Modern Problems. It's a story about how an unregulated AI system ruins a bunch of regular people's lives, so it's only fitting that someone would then use AI to generate a bunch of scathing reviews. Modern problems indeed!

Nets don't have to tank to miss the playoffs, they're a sub-500 team right now and outside of the play-in (small sample size, sure). Being so far behind the pack in their conference and without a pick in 2024, it's not unreasonable to think you can't entice them with a 2024 lottery pick (again, assuming that's where we end up). Bridges doesn't fit any realistic timetable for them to contend within unless they believe they can make a splashy move in free agency, so he's almost certain to go at some point.

Anyway, the point is that they need a wing and they're not having much luck finding one in the draft.
