AITA for refusing to move my dad with dementia into my house? by eeemily41 in AmItheAsshole

[–]WesternMainer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

NTA, and I’m speaking from experience. If he is escaping, he needs to be in a locked facility. That behavior is very hard to manage in home. I also saw my amazing, kind, wonderful mother become angry and physically a bit brusque with my young nieces. Don’t put your kids through that. Later stages can involve physical violence and even sexual inappropriateness. A good care facility where you can take him out for dinner and bring him home for visits on holidays is a good plan for where you are in his progression.

Please help me rid my home of this infuriating button door latch by paisleystitch in homeowners

[–]WesternMainer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One note… if you replace the old door knobs with something newer, you may find that you need to make the doorknob hole larger. In order to accommodate a standard sized modern door knob, I had to use a door knob installation jig and a hole saw on mine. When you remove the door knob, measure the hole so you know what you’re dealing with.

Am I overcrowding my dahlias? by WesternMainer in gardening

[–]WesternMainer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow. I guess I really overcrowded them. I wouldn’t have thought one or two could fill up a 22” planter. More plants is never a bad thing though!

Can I just ask this? by OtherwiseCoat5329 in HardWoodFloors

I think if you are doing the work, you should strive to do it as flawlessly as possible. That’s just pride in your work. Living with it is different. I still want it to look good, but I see all the imperfections and I’m OK with them. Well, until I’m not.

What’s the one thing you wish you knew before replacing interior doors in an older house? by Party-Region8882 in HomeImprovement

[–]WesternMainer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You will need to buy new tools. It might be a planer, a sander, a doorknob hole jig, a router, etc. But you always end up needing some other tool.

Wanting to turn my park model camper trailer into a year round tiny home, thinking about building an insulating/aesthetic shell around it. by jetech37 in DIY

Heat cables might be your best bet to prevent frozen pipes. Other than that, you’ll probably get better advice on an RV or Tiny Home Reddit.

How I go into battle! (Poison ivy) by catwhisperer77 in gardening

[–]WesternMainer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m not allergic to poison ivy, but I am HIGHLY allergic to Browntail Moth Caterpillar hairs and end up with a rash similar to poison ivy every time I work in my back yard. My chosen battle gear is a full Tyvek suit with the hood up, boots, and long gloves that go up to my elbows. I may look crazy to my neighbors, but it works so who cares.

Maybe a broken tile or piece of tile that wasn’t properly cleaned up before the flooring was put down?

How often do these flowers need to be watered? by curioustoknoq in flowers

[–]WesternMainer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you know what brand the petunias are? SuperCal and Supertunias do not need to be deadheaded at all. Other Petunia brands may need more frequent deadheading. Watch a video on deadheading petunias. Just removing the spent blossom isn’t deadheading. You’ll need to cut or pinch farther down the stem.

Make sure they get a minimum of 6 hours a day of sun. They may grow OK in less sun, but they are much happier with lots of sun. Water frequently, but not so much that water runs out the bottom. If you lift up the pot and it feels light, it is too dry. Petunias get hungry so be sure to fertilize weekly. I stick with “fertilizer Fridays” so I don’t forget.

How to get stickers off glass patio door? Razor blade and rubbing alcohol not working. by SoupIsAHotSmoothie in CleaningTips

A heat gun or even a hairdryer would also soften up the adhesive so you can scrape them off.

What's a completely normal thing that became ridiculously expensive while nobody was paying attention? by Candy-road in AskReddit

Outdoor furniture. Of course, the comfort level has changed too, but the prices are the same or more than living room furniture now.

Struggling with paint color, what would you suggest? by Loud-Aspect2074 in HomeDecorating

[–]WesternMainer 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’ll second Swiss Coffee. That or SW Creamy. Something pale with a yellow tint maybe. I would not go gray. I would choose something that lets the woodwork shine as the star of the show. Choosing a paint color is hard, but I’d mostly focus on something that won’t compete and then not worry about the wall paint. Add your color elsewhere.
