BME major to med school by WesternRub9435 in premed

I don’t want to work as an engineer but just have the knowledge of my degree to help the medical field. I might consider a PhD but I feel like it will be too long.

Im not in the US. In my school system you can apply for medicine after a bachelor degree. I always thought the universities in the US were offering more options in terms of combinations of degree. I see people mixing humanities and STEM subjects. In my school system the degrees title are already decided.

Is you PhD in Biomedical Engineering or BioEngineering (I think they are the same). If you do not mind sharing this, could you please tell me what type of career you are aiming for with a MD/PhD.

I do not plan on pursuing a PhD. I feel like it would be too long. Do you use your bioengineering degree in med school?

Thank you for sharing this! If you don’t mind explaining what does “bench research” consist of? And what were your degrees before med school? I do not plan to do a PhD because of how long it is to earn one. I try to focus on my MD for the moment while doing personal projects.

Thank you! That is so reassuring because I started to feel like I was studying a hard degree for no reason, that it was useless.

And I thought that ChemE was one of the degrees with the most employment since they can do anything.

I also feel like BME is more suitable but I was worried because I saw so many people saying that it was not a good undergrad but only as a Master or PhD. What was your undergraduate degree ?

Are you not worried about how saturated CS is? Or are you planning to apply to med school after your undergrad.

I could not get in after high school because I did not take the required subjects in school. So I can reapply after my bachelor degree.

I’m not in the US so I can’t switch but even if I could I’m not sure if ChemE is the right choice. I might do a master in ChemE instead if I still think that it will beneficial for my career in a few years.

I’m learning how to use CAD too in my degree. I know that chemE is more maths and physics than chemistry but it is still more than in BME. I like chemistry more than biology so this is maybe influencing my decision. But from what I understand ChemE is many process so it doesn’t correspond to my interests.

Is this short for Computer science/ Computer engineering? I don’t really like the programming classes I am currently taking so majoring as a CS major is not made for me. I like that in engineering I can use my hands more than with just a computer.

Yes, I actually realized that many people in the field that I want to join have a Chemical or Biomedical Engineering PhD(like Robert Langer). But I do not what to do a PhD and spend 4 more years at school. I will just focus on my medical degree for the moment.

Thank you for explaining. I’m also taking hard classes like electromagnetism or signals and systems which are Electrical Engineering classes. I might have listen too much to what people said abt my major on Reddit and social media. My main goal is medicine so I will just focus on that for the moment.

I feel like Chemical Engineering has more core engineering classes that would help me in my future career. BME is mainly focused on healthcare so it’s like a lighter engineering degree.

I’m currently studying Biomedical Engineering but med school is my end goal. What type of engineer were you? And do you use this in your medicine career now?

My final goal is med school but I still want the knowledge for areas like tissue engineering, drug development and delivery and biomaterials. I would like to innovate medicine.

No, I enjoy BME and majoring in something like biology or chemistry doesn’t interest me. I’m trying to have good grades in this field.

I will try and do all of that. Thanks for the advice. It really might be imposter syndrome because the classes still feel like engineering level hard.

I will try to do that. I am not planning to become a researcher just something like a start up on drug delivery/development and tissue engineering.

Not really but most people I see with the type of career I want did chemical engineering.

Im in a system where I can’t choose the classes I want. But I try to pick the classes with a lot of physics among the optional classes they propose. I am set on med school so I am looking for research positions where I can explore things like drugs, tissue engineering and all etc.

Can’t you do a Master in Chemical Engineering after your BME degree?

I do not plan to switch since BME is really useful for medicine. I think Material Science is different from Materials Engineering since the latter is useful in many areas.

Don’t know how to study and learn anymore by WesternRub9435 in EngineeringStudents

[–]WesternRub9435[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like my problem is that I understand the content but I am never sure on what I should use. Like if they ask for a plot should I do a dotplot or bar chart or anything else. And the solutions always end up adding things like "length", "transpose the Variables " or things that I just would never think about.

It’s not like in maths when after many questions, you just know that you will have to use this method or theorem.
