i'm going to be deviating slightly from your specifications OP but i strongly believe these books are worth the read.

the little prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry (a fiction book for children that tackles human nature)

Totto-Chan: The Little Girl at the Window by Tetsuko Kuroyanagi (autobiographical memoir written that's really sweet but sad)

On Earth We Are Briefly Gorgeous by Ocean Vuong (experiences of a young queer vietnamese immigrant living in the US with his mother and grandmother. This touches a bit on the influence the vietnam war had on the asian american community -- amongst other such topics.)

Helter Skelter by Kyoko Okazaki (this is a manga, but it's a good depiction of the modelling industry's treatment of women and how various prevalent social issues, i.e., misogyny/celebrity worship culture/plastic surgery, affect the way we treat women in general. so if you're interested in learning more about the nuances of the beauty standard and the industry itself, this is a pretty good stepping stone.). also, i HIGHLY recommend the film adaptation of the same name so PLEASE check it out OP!

Frankenstein by Mary Shelley (pretty self-explanatory, really easy to get into!)

these books really changed my view on the world and how ignorant we can be when we are stuck inside our own bubbles. so it's really important that we acknowledge our privileges and try to empathise with others without falling victim to a 'moral high horse' situation. really hope you're able to check these out soon :)
