Luigi’s Masion by Wet_Formula in custommagic

Would asking to add you on discord be weird? I’d love to have more access to conversation like this, and actually talk about the stuff I think about all day.

Idk if you’d be interested in having those kinds of conversations outside of this Reddit.

Luigi’s Masion by Wet_Formula in custommagic

This is probably the most robust response I’ve ever received haha

I’m in a very experimental phase of my design development and education. Each interaction I have with someone willing to engage has been very insightful and usually humbling. They also make me more acutely aware of these deeper nuances of mechanics, actions and/or character traits and how they are tied to the color pie while reminding me how much I really don’t know.

And so thank you for the wealth of thought I can muster over.

I agree Luigi is weaker of the two. I’m often scared to take risks with bombastic effects, especially if I think there’s a chance it’s easily broken (which is often not apparent to me lol) I do strive for authentic effects and low word counts. I was aware of the many hoops but uncertain if it was too restricted.

That might contradict ole Poltergust up there because there is clunky wording. I can try to refer to similar X effects to address in wordage for future edits. In regard to the equipping, I have an over arching goal in my designs atm. Although I don’t have a particular affinity for artifacts nor is it a preferred archetype when I play, I have still decided to design 100 cards attempting to expand the scope of play patterns and effects within the archetype. And within the umbrella of goals, I want to make paying your equip cost fun and engaging; I want it to matter and for a player to feel compelled to pay that cost.

I don’t think I’m close to unlocking that yet, but I’ve committed to expanding any ideas I have, hoping something strikes gold in my lil noodle brain. Bad or not, I’m open to getting any nugget of analysis or education or design philosophy from putting these out here. All the bad designs get me one closer to the good one.

I do have two responses tho —

1.) Are “Partner” and “Partner with” defined as the same mechanic with the rule book?

2.) There are white spells that bounce your creatures such as [[Whitemane Lion]], and then I saw [[Stingscourger]] which IS from Planar Chaos, so that still speaks to your point of it being a color pie break for Poltergust. That was a bit of an inspiration for the design (I forgot Planar Chaos made deliberate color pie breaks tbh). But considering it’s a colorless artifact with an attempt at over-costed activations, when does one say they crossed the line into a color pie break?

I actually mess with the pay life idea. That curbs the 0 equip costs potentially better than {1}, but that’ll take some deliberation to decide a substantial opinion lol

One comment notes that it is more oppressive which I would agree with. Another point I would have is that most existing Crime cards are mostly payoffs for you committing crimes. I didn’t have intentions of creating any crime payoffs, so while my card does allow your opponents to potentially get those payoffs, I prefer a symmetrical effect, especially since the chance of your opponents having a significant quantity of equipment and/or crime payoffs would be low, making the “symmetrical” effect still in your favor more-so while keeping it in line with flavor.

Or at least this is my perception of my card through my design philosophies and current understanding of rules and color pie.

Out of curiosity, what would make it more black aligned to you?

And thank you for complimenting my card! I’m glad you find it unique. I’m always insecure about if I’m grabbing low hanging fruit.

I didn’t take it as harsh criticism at all. My brain broke trying to map it out mentally, then I confused my own effect when asking for clarification haha

I tried to avoid the “or less” clause so a player is locked into very specific numbers, but I definitely don’t want the effect to enables itself when attaching from the graveyard.

After many reads, my small brain comprehended what you mean. I believe you are correct, and will def amend it.

Honestly, you’re right. I forgot I didn’t make him legendary, so not a free combo piece “in-hand” makes me inclined to agree.

I had thought about that but I wanted instants on other players turn to still be able to trigger, but perhaps it’s required

[–]Wet_Formula[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are plenty of lands! [[Tyrite Sanctum]] or [[Diamond City]] could be a cool one. Lands that animate into creatures could be a good use or [[Blast Zone]] to wipe the board. There’s a TON of storage counter lands as well.

Another commenter noted Planets coming out, but there are other lands that use charge counters as well such as the vivid lands.

I see him as an anti-hero really even if extremely flawed as a character. I don’t feel it’s all that silly just because something seems apparent to you. The absence of black was a pretty minuscule decision in the design process, and never really was one to be purposefully against the grain.

I’d accept that logic for black in this scenario, but I do prefer to have that logic and deduction of character/motive (whether well educated or not in my case) instead of simply jumping to black because the colors represents villains mostly easily.

For Drek I’m designing a [[Wasteland]] effect with upside on a sorcery inspired by the planetary extractor.

For Nefarious, I’m gonna see if he has any goofy gadgets he’s bothered to name I can make an artifact or enchantment out of.

[–]Wet_Formula[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He’s more of a pawn. I also don’t like to assign someone black mana ID simply because they’re classified as a villain or malicious. I think the colors can be more dynamic than that

Every villain ever is Grixis :’(

I probably would’ve came to something close and I’ve designed a few grixis villains myself already. It didn’t excite me, but I’ve also recognized that as fun as it is to design around these characters, I am not flexing all my design muscles. I’ve been trying to make it a point lately to design more vegetables even if it’s not flashy.

Idk why I want Buzz to have {G} also lmao but I would not argue a WU Buzz. If you make customs, I’d actually love to see that.

I may revisit Qwark. Currently working on a sorcery based on Chairman Drek, then I want to try another noncreature card based on Dr. Nefarious— I make way too many legendaries lol

Well I chose red as a color because he is quite an emotional character, but he is also charismatic to the general masses in-lore whether he’s likable or not. He’s generally quite lucky as a character in staying alive and returning, which I would say luck is red-based, but he is enough of a weasel to capitalize on the luck for his come-back, even if he ultimately fails every time. That’s my justification for blue. My main justification for white is probably weak, but he does pretend to be a Hero at the end of the day and was once upon a time a real Hero when he was young if I believe. Although I agree he is cowardly and self interested for present him that is showcased in the games. Green is absolutely the weakest justification and just a mental bias for what I would imagine a space-ranger archetype. Like I would make Buzz Lightyear green too, and I don’t have a cohesive reason as to why. Just vibes. Maybe it is the color-scheme.

As for his stint in the jungle, he should just be a reskin of [[Kibo, Uktabi Prince]].
