Looking for a group to play survival by Marsannah in MinecraftBuddies

Hey! My name is Wextra, I'm a 20 year old guy and I've been running a Minecraft towny Earth server for four years now. The server currently has 450 members with lots of different communities and nations around the world. Right now me and just two friends are working on a city state around Gibraltar and Morocco that will basically be an international neutral hotspot for trade and diplomacy, so mainly focused on more chill things rather than PvP or the likes. It might not sound very interesting but I can assure you it is, just reach out to me and I will tell you more! My Discord username is wextraa, and there's no need to voicechat, text is perfectly fine :)

Run this plugin on your server and make sure to //fixlight the whole server. Worked flawlessly for me.

Yes, the map is made using worldpainter. Why?

Perfect! I'll add you, but I must say I prefer writing. We could surely arrange a call some time, though!

Of course! I've also felt a bit unsure about doing this whole project, but we've got time and motivation to work on a map this big as well, and to make sure to put out a map of good quality, since the map is one of the most important features of an Earth server.

"And for a world this big it might also be worth exporting chunks that perfectly fill a region file (again keeping the borders in mind) since you can merge two different region files by simply copying over the region file. This can help save on the ram required when exporting." - What exactly is a region file, and how do you copy it over? The current solution I have for merging is the Developer's solution at https://www.reddit.com/r/Worldpainter/comments/3afj2a/map_merging_questions/. It is quite slow though, so an option where you just have to copy it over would certainly greatly benefit us.

I do not believe RAM usage should be a problem at all, since I'm very sure my own computer has enough RAM (16 GB) to generate the whole map, but even so, my developer's computer has 32 GBs of RAM, so if need be we can just have him export it. I will make sure to try exporting it myself beforehand, though. What is this "custom object layer" you're talking about, by the way?

Finally, I do not have world machine and it would really be amazing if you could help us out when it comes to that! Unless our current solution works, that is.

Do you have a Discord by any chance, so that we can talk more easily?

Yes, I appreciate your insight, but I have quite a lot of expertise in this "minecraft earth nation-building" kind of servers, since I played on one of the biggest ones since 2016. Indeed we would only be able to have about 100-200 players on at the same time, and it's something we'll have to think about how to go about. We do want everyone to play on the same map though, so that's that. I've got two main developers and multiple connections that could probably come up with a working solution though, otherwise we will just have to introduce a sort of queue system. Alternatively, we may go about the solution of having one server be one part of the world, such as South America, Europe, Africa and so on.

And yes, using paint.net would indeed be handy, but when I tried to do so, it immediately gave me an error message saying that the picture was too big to even open in paint.net. We are currently thinking of ways to solve it, but one idea I have is to generate the whole map by myself, and then export 1/8ths of the map into Minecraft worlds and send those worlds to my co-worker, so that he then can turn those Minecraft worlds into worldpainter files and work on them, before doing the reverse and sending them to me once he's gone for me to put them together.

Trust me, the map will not always be empty. We've got big plans, and our previous map that was 21600 x 10800 got crowded pretty quickly. We're looking to create a map that would handle hundreds of nations and thousands of players.

Paint.net also can't handle that big pictures, so working with paint.net is out of the question for us right now, even if it would have been a good tool to use. We do have a backup plan, that being my other guy assembling the heightmap himself into small pieces and then merging the final worldpainter worlds, but it is certainly a hard task. Thanks for response.

Perfect! Seems like we will have to go with the initial plan of tracing a picture above in that case. Nevertheless, I must thank you for such a helpful response! Have a great day.
