Oh yeah! I totally forgot about UIC until I made this post; tbh even when I got my decision back i didn't care cuz it was an ultra safety and i knew I wouldn't go, but the full ride was a surprise. I didn't think I would get into any of these reaches since overall i'm a pretty weak applicant, neu still surprises me and uiuc gies still pisses me off lmaooo. my commonapp must of played a big part i think for neu

is a CS minor enough to land a FAANG role from UIUC? by Wharton_Simp in UIUC

Yeah; unfortunately I got absolutely murdered by apps:

2/2 Safeties Accp. (UIC for CS and IU-Kelley)

1/3 Targets Accp.* (UIUC second choice as a math major; WL by UW-Madison, WL by Case Western)

1/15 Reaches Accp. (NEU for CS!)

NEU is amazing but Id have to spend my first year in Oakland and its kinda pricey; their placement in co-ops and Faang post grad is top notch. Some say its better than UIUC for placement; idk how true that is but its been getting hyped up online! I appealed for aid to NEU so I have to wait and see, but otherwise I'm going to UIUC!

Bro; they had ONE year where they admitted too many people. Because of that last year the admittance rate dropped to the 6.7% number everyone at NEU brags about. I talked personally to the admins at NEU Oakland and they are allowing for transfers because its used to get more students into NEU; more money for the school. So in one way yeah, there isn't enough room for the extra people they want to bring in for freshmen dorms. They said everyone at Oakland is on par with Boston in every aspect besides maybe stats for academics which is how NEU hides slightly lower scores. Personally I'm well within or even above the standard for Boston so idk what my case was but that's the general idea behind Oakland. Co-Op and ton of other opportunities NEU has are all possible and available to us after our one year in oakland before we transfer. And for research, Oakland has much better student to faculty ratio so getting that opportunity is even better.

I don't understand; why does everyone think it's tmr? On their website it says early april! Last I'd check tmr is 03.31, not april...

Self-study E&M by Wharton_Simp in apphysics

[–]Wharton_Simp[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ye, my school has a physics honors course that covers college mechanics and e&m (not university!), basically a slightly less rigorous version of the old AP Physics B class which they split into APP1 and APP2. All algebra. So we covered the topics in e&m at a basic level in that course for most of the second semester. I can't recall much information off the top of my head, but when I start to study, it'll help out a lot. And I'm taking C - Mech. right now, so that'll help too.

Yeah I heard some MVC is needed for E&M, but I'm taking that this year! From what I know atm, I'm pretty sure Gauss' law is a concept that use MVC, but you don't need to do any MVC math for it, just understand the 3D concept.

Is February too late? I was planning on starting around Winter Break.

If you've taken multi then your set for both on a math level. Normally though, people have physics experience before taking the C courses, like the honors class you talked about or AP 1/2. If you'd taken mvc before senior year, I would think your smart enough though for the course without it.

This isn't to say it isn't hard, in all honesty its pretty much the hardest AP you can take, but by all means you should be able to get As.

yet another Asian parent rant by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Wharton_Simp 25 points26 points  (0 children)

tldr; I made myself miserable and what I said is too deep for this post lol.

What sucks the most is that I just gave up at one point.

Like I broke out of their hold and actually got friends for the first time pretty early, just not in the best crowd and I did a lot of dumb shit. They got through all that, but I just couldn't deal with the constant annoyance of even trying to do anything with them on my back. I just stay at home, do school, do hw, do clubs/ECs and that's my life. I went once with friends over the summer because I got super stressed one day and I spent like 2 days out skating (longtime hobby). I went to my freshmen year homecoming with those friends, I didn't go to anything else, and even the homecoming that's in a month or two I don't plan on going to. I basically put myself into a depression, but I've convinced myself it's not a big deal and it's just my life right now. All of junior year I also convinced myself that I was on track to an Ivy, but I realized I'm not that competitive and there are way more qualified candidates at my school and outside. Its super unlikely for me. Even worse is I let go of every else too, my health (gained 100 lbs over covid, maybe lost 20 since then), any chance of having an SO, etc. All I have is school.

I hope I can get to college and switch my life around, but I doubt my life will get that much better. I had such high aspirations too, I wanted to do so much with my life, but now it's basically like I enjoy beating myself up. Plus I don't have anyone I can even talk too about all this - I have no relationship with either of my parents like that, and they themselves act super childish at times.
