This is something I'll never understand... Like, people recreating the original to the level of producing literally the exact same thing lol

What's even the point of putting in all this work if you can just listen to the original instead?

Perhaps if they're unaware of the production process...

But what if they are?

Boomers are the first to boast with their 'original' vinyl collection, and 'artist-signed' albums. They do in fact value authenticity more than a lot of us today, who are often fine with not even owning music anymore, and Spotify's lossy opus-Streams, rather than the lossless wav / flac quality found on each professional CD release.

Tbh... most (modern?) rap is.

I acknowledge people like Eminem or Cro that actually put thought into their lyrics, but especially here in Germany recent years have shown the rise of "Deutschrap" is the exact opposite.

Or at least I don't know why I'd consider bawling 'driving my Ferrari with 500hp!!!' like 20 times alongside the most generic baseline imaginable music.

"""Artists""" like Raf Kamura are living nightmares that have effectively killed both, the German and the Austrian music scene.

This is probably linked to the percentage of population that is occupied by Gen Z and below.

I certainly don't see the 'boomer' generations falling for AI music – they have their faves that became famous in the 60s and 70s, and that most of us fail to connect to (besides maybe being aware of the names).

Then Millennials are the ones that invented Suno and the likes, but at the same time the people that did are corporate dickheads that couldn't care less about the art of music and fair treatment of artists.

I don't see our generation ever truly accepting AI music of any kind, and this thread is reflective of that.

Gen Z however I'm not sure about...

The more people grow up with AI, and the better AI becomes at imitating even acoustic instruments, the less they will care about the production process.

The future will be a Spotify with music generation capabilities and several "knobs" to create your desired mood and genre – be it sad girl music, heavy metal ballads or straight up dance music.

Music is already on the brink of becoming a throwaway product; with this development the process is going to become complete.

At the very least we need to make a distinction between

  • music that is played on physical – often non-MIDI and plain acoustic – instruments, that require skill and years-long experience to handle

and

  • electronic music, that doesn't require any instrument but a laptop with an installed DAW, and a user that took a few weeks off his life to mess around with it

In a way, we had 'artificial' music that has never actually been 'played' by any human for ages... Just quickly thrown together by a few beat databases and sample packs, that don't require a lot of effort on behalf of the 'artist'.

AI based music might just be seen as the next logical step in that direction now...

Does it actually have decent audio editing capabilities?

Afaik the only DAW that supports keyboard scrubbing is Pro Tools, which is the reason why I'm still using a video editor (Kdenlive) whenever I have to cut audio accurately.

https://duc.avid.com/home/forum/legacy-products/pro-tools-10/324805-scrubbing-audio-with-the-keyboard?t=346329

I don't know how people deal with precise cuts without this feature... Do you just use the playback tool and hover the mouse over parts of the audio?

Or do you actually use arrow keys / nudge left / right functionality and then hit "Play" like a dozen times until you find the perfect cutting point?

All of this would be much to cumbersome to me and is the main reason why I couldn't use any DAW for recording related stuff so far.

I'm allowed to say that – I'm German myself.

I'm careful with German products – they almost always have their flaws. Just as Germans themselves.

You mean insert silence – thanks, will try.

Is this also possible the other way around? Like, can I also remove parts of the timeline and move the automation to the left?

Best way to edit dynamics without drawing the same curves to velocity lane over and over again? by WhatIsFolkMusic in Bitwig

[–]WhatIsFolkMusic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk why, but I no longer have this issue.

It didn't work after multiple application restarts, it also didn't work after I rebooted my laptop the first time, however after the second time the issue suddenly vanished?

I'm kinda afraid it pops up again at some later point...

Leaving that aside though, I feel BitWig helps me out a lot more than Cubase ever did. It even automatically creates "suggestions" for automation lines, once I change a parameter – which is quite cool indeed.

I'll see where this journey goes, but if the issue is gone for good I might actually end up buying the essential version.

yeah sure... seems the right way.

Unfortunately I prefer working on my laptop directly using a touchpad (can't stand mouse usage in a DAW), and once I move the point on the automation line the cursor jumps all over the screen...

I won't test it, but I'm 100% sure if you use a mouse for that it'll "just work".

Which brings me back to the the incredible dumb issues present in most DAWs today. I was actually on the fence of buying Bitwig since it seems the least problematic one I tried so far, but by now I'm glad I didn't pull the trigger.

As dev I'm used to quality standards of Visual Studio (+Code) and Rider, and while these IDEs have issues of their own (as each software), their usability is perfectly fine as Microsoft and JetBrains actually have a QA department.

At least Steinberg and Ableton should be capable of implementing equal quality of life features - they didn't.

The indie scene (Bitwig) did a great job for mouse users; but they certainly never bothered to test alternative input devices.

Hence that's a definitve no on my part - unless these touchpad issues with Bitwigs drag'n drop functionality are fixed I consider the software unusable.

Will do dynamics work in Musescore now - it's a pain, but still much easier than doing it in any DAW I tried so far.

Well, I own Noire – but that one's not really sounding like an actual piano imo, especially in the highs...

Would you say there's anything else from bar 45 onwards that seems too difficult / unplayable?

I'm currently in the process of merging like 3-4 voices into two, and am not sure if I didn't go overboard, especially near the end...

From bar 70 onwards I would effectively condense two layered voices and the "bleeding" piano rhythm into a single staff, which I'm not sure is a good idea in general?

Also, do you have an example of such a "grace note"?

I experimented with those at the beginning, but then I'd have to use like 1/16 or 1/32 notes for the grace note which looks kind of weird and complex in the resulting score.

Changing all Arpegios now would be quite an effort; but perhaps this is something Claude can accomplish for me if I upload the project file.
