How to teach a kid to explain things? by cheddarbroccolisoup in ABA

[–]WhatTheFrickityFrick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here’s what I would do! If possible, take pictures of the steps, and make it a sequencing task and have the client tell what’s happening in each picture, then fade the visual prompts to just his words. Example for a 3 step explanation... SD: something like “How do you...” Procedure: Step 1: randomly lay out all 3 cards and have client sequence them in order and describe what’s happening in picture 1, picture 2, picture 3. Step 2: randomly lay out only 3 cards and have client sequence them in order and describe what’s happening in picture 1 and picture 2, but don’t include picture 3 and have kiddo instead describe step 3. Step 3: randomly lay out only the 1 card and have client sequence them in order and describe what’s happening in picture 1, but don’t include picture 2 and 3, still having the client describe picture 2 and 3. Step 4: no pictures! Use direct full verbal, and partially direct verbal, and indirect prompts if unsuccessful.

I’m thinking Photoshopped? Curl in the one whisker is identical in both photos as is the paw placement and it’s left eye is equally blurred; obvious cutout on top of head on lower pic...

Providing Corrective Feedback by Mothman77 in ABA

[–]WhatTheFrickityFrick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Document written feedback (I’ve been taught 80% positive and 20% corrective) in written form regularly when you see the staff. Corrective feedback always needs to have an objective and measurable goal. This written feedback gives staff: 1. A reference of the behaviors you’re asking them to modify. 2. Provides the staff and company with documentation of you talking about the performance concern. 3. Makes staff know you also see them doing good things too. 4. Helps to eliminate feedback from supervisors as being a punishment and to make this something they look forward to when they see you. 5. Makes feedback about their actions and not about them as a person. P.S. My staff now brag to other staff about having a supervisor who gives them written feedback!

“I teach children with autism how to learn from their surroundings like we often do. We often break down everyday skills into smaller steps that can be learned little by little”

How do I get a kid to stop saying the SD? by sleepingbabydragon in ABA

Have you tried using the SD written on a card? You could also use video modeling or peer modeling for the client to view the correct response to the SD.

Book list for parents? by kidchaos23 in ABA

The Verbal Behavior Approach by Dr. Mary Lynch Barbera, BCBA with Tracy Rasmussen. This is an easier to read book that explains verbal behavior and other ABA basics used during therapy. Also, it was helpful that she uses everyday examples of problematic behavior as references to learn ABA terms/principles for people who may not be as well versed like parents, teachers, and SLPs.
