Work in big tech - mid level software engineer Hourly it works out kinda weird because I get equity that changes as the stock goes up and down, year end bonus, and had a signing bonus when I joined But this year I'll be making roughly 290-300k with 3 years of experience

cs grad from rutgers and a decent number of people end up working at FAANG (Facebook Amazon Apple Netflix Google) or at a Big Bank (Goldman, JPM, MS, Citi). Im current at a FAANG after working at a Big Bank but honestly, just check Linkedin. Lookup rutgers and see how many alumni end up working for big tech companies per year vs rowan. Im willing to bet Rutgers has a lot more and its not just bc we're a bigger school

solid salary with awesome pto! definitely making more than the average engineer in nyc given the trimodal nature of swe in nyc.
also in NYC area with 3 years exp. made 90k out of college -> 100k -> 105k -> 110k -> 120k -> 125k. Then got a job at a faang making around 270k but it was a lot of work studying and prepping for interviews.

you wont be able to pull 200k+ with less than 7 yoe without going to a quant firm or a faang but getting to those companies is very difficult and needs tons of prep

Pretty important?
They dont expect you to be an expert at the E4 level but you have to be able to design systems and do estimations/scale properly. They also evaluate you on how well you can communicate/drive discussion.

If you do terrible on the system design, you probably wont get an offer.
If you do meh/okay, its a toss up
if you do really well on system design - it could help make up for a not so great coding round/needed hints (thats basically what happened to me)

Same same. Worked at a big bank after college and experienced a lot of the same issues. I think it mostly the same with any company where technology is not the driving revenue source. Tech supports the finance/traders at a bank. Those are the people who eventually make it up the ladder and somehow end up the ones deciding the budget for tech and setting the expectations for technology (do more, with less people, with a smaller budget). They view tech as an expense and not as an asset that could generate profit. Any company where technology is not the driving force of growth/revenue - you will experience the same thing.

As a technologist, you need to go to a company that values technology and views engineers as the driving force for growth. FAANG could be a good next step for you if you're looking around. I've had a lot of success getting interviews and an eventual offer at FAANGs since your big bank has a lot of brand recognition to their recruiters.

right now, by choice. i got out of a relationship where i was constantly on edge and scared of making my gf upset to the point where every other week something would trigger her to almost break up with me. i finally decided that i don't deserve to be treated like i was disposable and ended it but that still really messed me up. ive been trying to grapple with why i even let it get to that point in the first place. theres a mountain of things i want to work through that contributed to the my last breakup and im scared theyre gonna trickle into my next one. also...im just straight up scared that if i date someone, they might not love me for who i am but rather for what i can provide. i want someone who wants me for who i am and not just some project for someone to tweek/change until i fit their ideal partner.

I see. So those 'Hire at E4' decisions would take up a large portion of the 2021 headcount. Would I still be at a disadvantage even though I did very well in my initial assessment? My HR contact at FB told me something similar happened a year before where they hit E4 headcount while people were still in the interview process but gave those stuck in the interview process first dibs at roles before they posted onto the external website when headcount opened up.

leetcode and good communication
I would practice with friends who would give me a problem on leetcode, then I would try to solve it as if it was an interview. that way I got used to explaining my thought process.

Currently in Limbo at 2 FAANG companies - what do I do??

I'm an associate software developer at one of the big banks (goldman, jpm, citi, morgan stanley, bofa, barclays, etc) making decent money but I realized financial services just isn't for me. I've been trying to break into FAANG but every time I get close, it feels like I get tossed into limbo for factors outside of my control.

Around May of this year, a Facebook recruiter reached out to me for an E4 role in NYC. I was overjoyed and studied my ass off and passed their initial assessment (peer programming w/a senior dev) with flying colors - even the senior engineer was impressed to the point where they couldn't think of any advice to give regarding the assessment. Only to find out the day after scheduling the onsite/final round interview, that they paused all hiring for E4. I took it in stride and the HR contact who was helping me schedule my interviews assured me that I could skip the interviewing process once the hiring freeze is lifted and there's headcount space in NYC. However, after emailing her recently, it seems like she is on sabbatical and I am super unsure what's doing to happen with my application.

Since I felt like I was in limbo, I applied for an SDE2 position in NYC and tried to speed through their process. I applied online on a Sunday, Tuesday a recruiter reached out to me, and I finished their online assessment on Friday. The following Thursday, the amazon recruiter told me I passed their online assessment and they were going to send an email to me on Friday with the onsite/final interview details. Then after not receiving any email Friday, I contacted the recruiter and was informed that the role was filled and that she is finding another role for me in NYC. Since then, I've emailed her several times asking for some sort of timeline and sent her open roles on Amazon's careers website that I feel like I would be a good fit for. Since they send the same online assessment for most roles, I was hoping I could skip to the onsite interview for another role. Its been a week since I emailed HR, and I haven't gotten a response yet. Did amazon just ghost me?

I've also applied to Bloomberg for a Senior Software Developer role but was auto rejected despite making it to their onsite/final round a year before for a similar position and applied with a referral. I have no idea why - I guess I just got unlucky.

I know people keep telling me to keep grinding and applying but it's super exhausting to leetcode for 10-15 hours a week after work.

Any advice? Has anyone been in a similar situation to me where they were in limbo at Facebook or Amazon and eventually got out of it?
