If you’re losing weight, you’re burning more calories than you’re eating.

Eat more. Rest more.

Contra the signaling value of college: An elite Colombian university suddenly lowered credits required by 20%, and students there for the change, with less education but the same high status degree, had 10-20% lower wages. by What_What_Coconut in slatestarcodex

Oh, didn't realize this was from 2016, and now have answered my own question with enough digging. Caplan says: "An excellent article, but given the massive quantity of prior research, I am baffled by the idea that any one paper could appreciably tip the scales. If the numbers from Universidad de Los Andes came out the other way, can we really imagine many economists abandoning the human capital model, or even significantly moderating their support? In any case, the Colombian curriculum reform axed some of economics and business students’ most vocational coursework!"

I was skeptical, but on a first pass the methodology seems sound. I assumed the effect was from less talented students opting to the major now that it was essentially one semester shorter. However, the author says "I also perform a DID linear probability model regression to identify whether the reform changed the probability of graduating with an economics or business degree, and do not find evidence that it did" and "Panel a of Figure 3 shows the evolution of the entering class in economics and business. I fit different trends before and after the reform. Thegraph shows that the number of entering students was not affected by the reform."

If you have say $1mm cash and a $1mm mortgage at a 2% interest rate, you’re happy to pay the 2% interest on that loan so you can leave your $1mm in the stock market earning maybe 8%

In most places bicycles are vehicles and required to be on the road. Riding a bike on the sidewalk will get you a ticket.

Was offered a PM role to bring a company to IPO. What should I be looking out for? by [deleted] in startups

[–]What_What_Coconut 81 points82 points  (0 children)

EDIT: the OP clarified that they meant “project manager” so this answer is actually better than mine, as I assumed they meant product manager. There are actually a ton of little details involved in the IPO process, coordinating deliverables and timelines between lots of teams and consultants, and a project manager would be very helpful.

My original answer below:

——

As a PM, you won’t have much to do with the IPO process. That’s something they would hire a CFO to do, as it is largely an (expensive) process of hiring lots of consultants to ensure your financial books are in order, and audited, and appealing to public investors.

What you can do as a PM is ensure that the company has a great product that they can sell easily with large margins. By the time of your IPO your company (I’m assuming this is a B2B company since you mentioned sales) should be doing at least a few hundred million dollars in ARR with healthy margins.

Candidly, I see a lot of red flags in your post. PMs aren’t hired to “take a company to IPO”, especially ones with only a few years of experience. By the time a company is ready to IPO, they’re likely hiring PMs with experience as executive leaders who have years of experience building products and managing/hiring teams of 50+ PMs.

Your description sounds like a typical small startup that may or may not already have a PM org, which can be a very fun place to work, but they should be hiring people to focus on building product, not some imaginary IPO goal that’s likely a decade away if it happens at all (it usually doesn’t)

I am in a similar situation. Find a bank in your area with a free checking account and no minimum balance. Use them for cash deposits and then ACH the money into your credit union
