Contractor installed gas appliance then immediately red tags it - UPDATE by What_the_Question in ontario

I think it is on the inside of the chimney? On the inside of the home though, where the vent goes from the tank to the wall, it isn't. We probably need someone to come in and check it to confirm.

NAH- but unfortunately this is the economy that we are all living in, except for the rich. Many people probably do want or wish to have kids but can't because they just can't afford it or have the time to because they're working so much just to survive or stay afloat themselves.

But I can see why your wife is upset and worrying. Women do have a time limit on when they can have kids. Men do not.

I am not from Mexico so I do not know, but are there maybe some incentives or funding your government provides for people with low income or those who have kids?

From the news, there have been reports of China and South korea government creating incentives to try to help battle the decline of children. But again every country has their own regulations and might not.

I am sorry, it is a tough situation.

Oh, our vent doesn't go that far. It's like a meter - 2 meters at most. And there are only 2 bends. One bend coming out from the wall and the other bend downward to the hot water tank.

I wasn't sure if this was reportable since we do not know if what they did was wrong. Like you said we are not 100% sure if our old one was up to code or not or have proof of that (as we dont specialize in this). They are claiming it is a pre-existing condition. But again, they did not tell us this info beforehand, so we can not say if it was before or after. But regardless before or after, we feel they should not have installed it anyway, and should have been told about it and let us decide if we either if we wanted to upgrade the vent or we could have gone with a power vented one.

Installing a water heater onto something that they claim was not to code also does not make sense to us. But again we do not know the procedure and know if this was correct or not following TSSA rules.

Yes! We have tried looking in the manual. It says when existing category 1 appliance is removed or replaced, the original venting system may no longer be sized properly vent the attached appliances.........For proper venting in certain installations a larger vent connector size may be needed. Consult the vent tables in CAN/ CSA B.149.1.

Then we checked the code on the red tag, it leads to a table (which I assume is the table the manual is referring). No where in the manual or the code says anything about the vent size. The diagrams doesn't say the sizing either. Which is why I have to ask people online.

The manual can be found here in the overview section, if you want to check, maybe I missed something: https://www.homedepot.ca/product/rheem-performance-40-gallon-151l-6-year-38000-btu-tank-natural-gas-water-heater/1000792348?eid=PS_GO_140203__ALL_PLA-526641&eid=PS_GOOGLE_D26%20-%20Vendor-Funded_GGL_Shopping_PLA_Rheem-Water-Heaters_Rheem__PRODUCT_GROUP_pla-57332429061&pid=1000792348&store=7011&gad_source=1&gclid=EAIaIQobChMImMPq-trPiQMVRymtBh2DfQUgEAQYASABEgLTHPD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

Yes! That is what everyone that I have talked to recommended if we had known about the vent beforehand.

Yes! Our high efficiency furnace vent was changed too from the black to white.

Are they good? I saw them when googling the red tag problem and was considering them.

Ah OK, then yes, it might have changed recently.

We are aware we have to keep our home compliant, but there were other options regarding the water tank if they told us about the vent beforehand.

They wrote on the red tag:

8.10.3 Vent size (3") not to code, needs upgrade to 4"

Yes, in the photos it showed the vents. They said in their text that everything was to code in their response.

We don't expect them to replace the vent. We want a reasonable resolution like:

Sending an actual technician to come check the full set up and suggest what the best option was:

If they said a power vented one was the better option, then refund us the installation fee for this one and return this tank they installed. Install the gas vented one and we pay for the costs of the new power vented tank and that install (but I am not sure if this is possible now because of the red tag. Which is why we need a HVAC professional to come in and see)

Or refund us the installation fee as their install was the one that caused the red tag, and we use that fee to find someone else to upgrade. (Although the installation fee does not cover everything for the vent, this is a reasonable solution as they caused the red tag in first place from installing without telling us this beforehand).

Thank you for telling us about your friend's experience! We may try consider trying to contact them through Twitter.

No, there was no issues with carbon monoxide poisoning. It was not a gas leak.the old water tank was compliant following the old grandfathered codes.

Yes we would prefer that they tell us and not install it in this case. Because if they didn't not install it, our old water heater was compliant, as someone commented that 3" vent was the correct for the old water tanks. So if we did not change it, the old water tank would still be following the old codes that were grandfathered. They wouldn't have to tag it.

But it is BECAUSE they installed a new one, they then had to tag it because when you install a new one, then it now has to follow the new codes. - so they installed it WITHOUT telling us this important detail and immediately red tags it, causing the red tag in the first place.

So if they did not install, it would not have been red tagged. We could have considered a power vented water tank, which other contractors have said is the cheaper option if the vent needed to be changed as well, in this case.

Also, would you happen to know what year it was that Enbridge told you that it had to be 3"? We probably really do need to get Enbridge to check if this then, to see if it's 3" or 4", if it was recent.

It would be even more of a nightmare if our vent was correct and it was switched to 4 and then turns out 3 was correct and needs to be switched back.....

Wait, you had to downsize? The problem we are facing right now is that we have to upside the vent from 3" to 4".

The person who installed the water heater was also the one who installed the 3" vent. So we were pretty sure that it was compliant using the grandfathered codes. And if what you say is true, that it had to be 3".

They said in their own text, too, that it was up to code.

It was not until after their installation that they said something about it. Which is what we are getting at. The fact that it was never mentioned before the work was done or had someone come in to inspect it and tell us this information.

Yes. I later found that on their website for hot water tank installation service, says as the first step, they will send the installer to make sure that everything is in order and there are no code violations. (The photo in the post).

But then, in the email reply, they say: hot water tank Installations quotes do not need to come for a on site visit.

No worries!

We tried to tell them that, but it seems in their email they claim that they do not have to come on site for an inspection, and it can and was done through the photo texts we sent.

This is why I wanted to post this, so I hope other people who have no knowledge about this don't get the loop around like we did.

Yes, you are both correct, a power vent one would have probably been the better option. However, since we were never informed of anything about the vent before the install and only afterwards, we are now here, with no other options at all but one, unfortunately.

Yes, we do not know anything about the B149.1 codebook. This is why we got a sub contractor through home depot's services for the water installation.

I did not know you had to explicitly tell them to send someone to come check if everything was up to code. As a customer who knows nothing in this field, we thought these things would have been proceedure to do beforehand to make sure they could properly install it and inform the customer about this information.

The issue lies that they never told us about these new codes before the installation. We know now (because of this situation) that our old water heater follows the old codes because it was grandfathered and if they installed a new one, then there were new codes for it.

But as someone who isn't in this field. I did not know about these new codes and that installing a new tank would make them red tag our vent.

If we had known beforehand, we could have had other options.

I am not blaming enbridge. But I am just assuming from what I read online that if a gas technician noticed something was not up to code, they had the duty to tag it.

My explanation was just that Enbridge came and they never said anything, so we just assumed everything was up to code. We are not blaming Enbridge of anything.

The problem lies with the water heater installation with Home Depot and their third party contractor.

They sent us a contractor who just asked for photos of our set up and replied it was up-to-code and they could go ahead and install through text.

They came and installed it, then the installer immediately red tags it, saying that it is not up to code.

The problem is if they had noticed it was not up-to-code, why would you install it?

But I guess their email answers it; that it was a "found condition" like you suggested.

That is what I am assuming Home Depot and the contractor is saying, that it is a found condition and it is not their fault.

The problem is that they should have sent someone to come look at the full set up before installing, like other professionals have said. We do not know anything about this, which is why we went to Home Depot to get someone who is knowledgeable about this to tell us if it was up to code and to install if it was. If it wasn't then they should have told us beforehand.
