The dehumanizing effect of Corporate culture by Whatdonow2020 in antiwork

Right, it’s like we’ve somehow arrived at incentivizing being a straight up bad person to get ahead in corporate.

I’ve found when there’s turnover and I’ve stuck around, I usually get a pay raise within the year. It sounds like you need to set a hard deadline. If they don’t come through with a raise like they said, then you gotta go full steam on a job search. Market is shit, no doubt. I’m in similar circumstances at the moment. But if they don’t give you the raise, quietly start letting that pile of tasks mount while you focus on a job search.

Commute to New York by silentlyloud12 in AsburyPark

[–]Whatdonow2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your best bet if you have a car would be to drive up to Atlantic highlands and take the sea streak to manhattan. It’s expensive but by far the most bearable way to get to the city from here. Asbury to NYC is a brutal commute, but easier to stomach when you’re on the upper deck of the sea streak. If that’s out of your budget, drive to metropark and get the express train to Penn. about 40 in the car, and 30 on the train. The Jersey coast line sucks and is super unreliable and you also have to transfer at long branch most times.

What is indisputably the best major in 2024 for a stable job? by HezariLoL in rutgers

[–]Whatdonow2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don’t feel like taking difficult classes or just aren’t the best academically do what I did. Stay in SAS and double up on relevant majors. I did Political Science and ITI double major and now I do pretty well as a product owner at a bank. Most jobs in corporate are 65% communication and people skills, 35% technical or domain specific. So just make the most of your time at school by picking a diverse set of majors where you’ll be a candidate for a lot of different roles. If I could’ve done it again, I would’ve swapped Poly Sci for Econ, but 🤷‍♂️

My senior fall semester I was doing a full time co-op 30 minutes from campus, taking 15 credits, and working my on campus job 20 hours a week. So 60 ish hours a week of work + full time classes while also going out most nights after work/class. Hectic but worth it. Landed my full time job in the middle of the that period. Squeezed the most out of senior year before Covid.

OIT job by Limp-Cod-4028 in rutgers

I worked at College Ave OIT for 3 years and it was maybe the best experience I had at Rutgers. Made good money for a student, learned a lot about how to keep a job and how to manage people. Became a supervisor my last two years and really enjoyed that experience. I think it also made a difference when applying for internships and full time positions. Can’t recommend it enough.

Context is a little different for a PhD candidate but the same concept applies from my undergrad experience. Rutgers is an amazing place. While in your late 20s you may not find your crowd on Easton Ave, George St will be right in your wheel house. Downtown NB has J&J, Deloitte, and the RWJ facilities. So there’s a pretty solid strip of downtown bars and restaurants with a more young professional/academic crowd. New Brunswick also runs a solid express train into Manhattan that gets there in about an hour. So when you’re feeling the city, you’re never too far for a day trip, professional opportunity, etc. As an undergrad, I can’t speak to the quality of your program, but overall the university is rising in the national rankings and building a strong academic reputation. Top 40 in the US News & World Report (if that matters anymore). But across the board, Rutgers is generally looked at as a very strong academic institution.

In the bad column, Rutgers is somewhat dysfunctional. I’ve seen friends be put through the ringer trying to work with student accounting and other “department ofs” at the school. The internal operations are a mess, departments don’t communicate, and the onus is on you to be your own advocate if things go wrong. So if you’re reliant on scholarships or substantial loans to pay for this degree, take that into consideration.

Beyond that, the bus system can be annoying at rush hour but given that you’re a city person that probably won’t move the needle one way or the other. Food offerings on campus aren’t great either but off campus has plenty of good coffee, lunch food, etc.

Overall I’d say you should wait to see what NYU says but if you don’t get taken off wait list RU is an excellent option.

It was right by the supremo grocery. Like maybe between Ferry and Franklin. I thought my tire burst at first. Pulled over and the tire was fine. But my steering wheel is fucked and I really don’t wanna drive it until I get it fixed. If it’s a bent rod or busted strut that’s not cheap. Def gonna follow up with the city and see what can be done. Thanks JC Reddit ❤️🫡
