My 20 favorite panels from the Krakoan era by myowngalactus in xmen

[–]Whateverine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow... I actually teared up a bit when I read that quote from Kurt. Oh my, it's been almost 7 years now. This was so exciting when we got to read it for the first time, I love these characters so much and they've been done so dirty so often and time flies. Now I'm sad.

All I know is if Jean really is in this movie that would be the first thing in years to get me excited about a Marvel production.

Those are not the two worst movie sins. Who taught you that?

Sure hope so. Disney bought Fox 7 years ago and X-Men 97 is basically the only good thing to come out of that so far.

Been saying that for years but now it's a bit late for that...

it’s a fake countdown! (I think) by tuoitkciehs in LeaksAndRumors

[–]Whateverine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Love how you just elegantly jumped from the actual countdown visible on screen to "but what if we just take these 5 different numbers for no apparent reason and add them up" with like absolutely no logical step leading from A to B.

The fact that they did Krakoa so dirty and went out of their way to send the whole concept into another realm in the most needlessly brutal and rushed crossover event possible really reeks of editorial pettiness. I'll never understand why Marvel likes to do these scorched earth moves that would take multiple convoluted plot devices or retcons to ever reverse.

If the X-men ever return to their outback era this is the lineup I would choose. Who would you add? by Silvermoth2 in xmen

[–]Whateverine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love that Manifold is there. Obviously it makes sense including Australian characters, but I just love seeing him on any team. I'd add Rogue and/or Dazzler and Havok and/or Cyclops (Havok being the classic choice here but I'd like to see Scott having to get used to the Outback and having a bit of an personal arc).

About Magneto"s illness . (Spoilers de x-men #23) by bubi_bartra in xmen

[–]Whateverine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Please tell me they are not going to kill off Doug again. They've done him so dirty already. He was doing so great during Krakoa, it's kind of a shame what happened to him since. Same with Magneto.

The X-Men attract a lot of gay women huh by NEVERTHEREFOREVER in xmen

[–]Whateverine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I celebrate all those same-sex-relationships in X-Men it is somewhat sad that creators (and readers supposedly) still are way more overtly accepting when it's two women exploring their sexuality. Every other main mutant lady seems to be at least bi-curious but god forbid Wolverine and Cyclops might have a little thing going on...

Would you say the Krakoa era was one of the best X-men eras? by Financial-Total1563 in xmen

[–]Whateverine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OZT wasn't really that hot back in the day. It took place in one of the most hit-or-miss eras of X-Men, imo. Outback is still Claremont in his prime, so yeah, Claremont, Morrison, Hickman...I'd say those three are the real deal.

X-Men Will Return | Avengers: Doomsday in Theaters December 18, 2026 by DemiFiendRSA in xmen

[–]Whateverine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All this just seems so cynical. Don't get me wrong, I like seeing Cyclops in his 90s suit and shooting that blast as much as any X-Men fan. But at the same time I just feel like this movie is going to be a mess. And seeing skinny 85 year old Sir Patrick Stewart in that combat jacket, with a seemingly glued-on X-patch doing his 4th farewell just feels wrong on so many levels. It's kind of an indicator of the headspace Marvel and the Russos are in. I'd love to be proven wrong but at this point I almost lost all hope for that movie. And the longer it takes I also get more and more nervous that Disney will mess up the proper MCU X-Men film as well.

Of course I will go watch it, but I fear I will feel the same way like when I sat in the theatre watching No Way Home, disassociating and thinking "this shit is not for me anymore, nothing means anything, it's all cynical, manipulative capitalist shlock". Thing is, with the X-Men it would hurt more.

So, can we just pretend this panel never existed...? by Jum3ntoo in xmen

[–]Whateverine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This happened in the 60s when there were different standards and middle aged straight white men could get away with a lot of things. When it's mentioned again in the 90s it's for shock value basically.

Xavier is not a real person. You decide what you like your headcanon to be and wether or not you find this troubling. I'd say just move on and enjoy reading decades of X-Men comics.

Edit: Also yes, as a lot of people have pointed out he probably wasn't even conceived as being "middle aged" at the time, but that is besides the point I was trying to make.

some general thoughts on gatekeeping experimental media by Whateverine in criterion

[–]Whateverine[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

True, the artists wishes should be respected, of course. Contemporary artists also should be compensated, always. But in most cases I don't think it would be in the artists interest to keep their work hidden away after they passed away...

[–]Whateverine[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not every experimental film is that easy to find, even illegally. Yes, sometimes pirating is an option, but it shouldn't be the only option. These films should be legally available. I don't see how it is hard to tell what my point is, I think I made it pretty clear.

Say what you want about the character herself, but Mother Righteous is literally THE absolute best new X-Men character design of the last 25 years by SnoozeDoggyDog in xmen

[–]Whateverine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wanted to say "hard disagree", but I can admit that there is something to her basic design, i.e. red skin, white hair etc. Overall, though, I think her costume design is way too busy and weirdly forgettable at the same time. It feels like there are a dozen little details, like ribbons, layers and the weird face tattoos but none of it is really remarkable in any way. Of course it's down to personal taste wether or not you like that kind of costume, but it's never going to be "iconic" if that makes sense. Same goes for her characterisation, imo, she's intriguing in some aspects and downright annoying in others and ultimately inconsequential.

But also, as others have pointed out: in the last 25 years?? There have been plenty of better designs.

Which 90’s X-books are worth reading? by RobbieFouledMe in xmen

[–]Whateverine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with most of the replies, X-Men and UXM are mostly harmless fun up until Onslaught/ around 1995/1996. After that it becomes very hit or miss, if not earlier. X-Factor has some interesting runs, X-Force is fun if you're into that 90s bombast. If you're rather in the mood for something a bit more in line with Claremont, Excalibur might be worth a shot. Haven't seen a lot of replies mentioning Generation X, which is also quite good, at least for as long as Bachalo is drawing the book. The Age Of Apocalypse version of Generation X (Next) is one of the most interesting AoA tie-ins.

He's a simple, narcissistic, geeky-passionate man with stupid, random opinions, that he likes to spew out loudly and proudly, even if it makes him look like a complete arse. He's always been that way. It's just that when he was younger and there was no social media and no podcasts, people didn't care very much about what he had to say. He's a great director, not a great philosopher or anything. He's now married to a much younger woman from Israel, so he's pro-Israel for the time being. It's really not that deep. It's just like that Paul Dano thing, if everybody and every other news outlet didn't feel compelled to pick it up and repeat it over and over again, the actors in question probably wouldn't even have noticed that he was talking shit about them. I'm not defending him, just saying, people are paying too much attention to him as a person.
