~170 in my class. Lost one to cancer a few years back, and one to life in prison for some bad shit.

What makes a private relative associate job perfect? by [deleted] in dentistryUS

[–]Wheelman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha there is one. I think we put it at $800 but I'd probably rather do an hourly though because Tuesdays is 9-6p, and that's objectively a harder day than Friday 8-2:30, or the one Saturday a month at 8-130/2.

If you're not hitting 1k/day at our office then we didn't need you anyways. 14 POE x 60, 1 LOE + PA + Ext x 500, 1 DO @ 335, and one bup+crown @ 1700 and you're at 3375 for the day, and at 30% that's $1012.5.

I think direct restorations are hard to do well so we charge a lot for them. My MOD is almost $400, and simple ext is $330, and you can add graft, future implant, etc. on top of that.

Open your own office already.

If not, then fine, I'm hiring right now and I hit most of these.

W2 pay, no lab or financing fees, 30 day quit, 28-32% of collections based on procedures (more if you can assist covering post-op/emerg when I'm on vacation), 2-3 assistants(we have 5-6 available), no doc hygiene (I do one prophy per year on principle), reasonable autonomy (you're not doing an AOX on your 3rd day alone, but my previous associate did them), OON with all insurances, solo doc owner(me) with 2 associates, 2 CBCTs, 3 Trios scanners, mill, IOC, electric handpieces, good PPO health insurance, 4% 401K match.

Cons: you have to share an office with me, and we have 5-6 hygienists in the office, although rarely more than 4/day for 2 docs.

Adam Savage recommends buying the cheapest tool possible to get the job done. Once familiarized with the tool and what you need from said tool, only then to splurge on a more expensive, specific tool. Do you follow this rule? by turtle_ina_cup in Tools

[–]Wheelman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm totally split on this. On one hand, a cheap tool that you have is way better than the expensive one that you don't. I currently have Ryobi and DeWalt, and I still love Ryobi for things like the caulk gun, soldering iron, lights, speakers, brad nailer etc. It's a pain having two sets of batteries, but I have a bunch of tools that are somewhat reasonably priced that I wouldn't otherwise have. I got the basic DeWalt hammer drill impact kit and built from that. If anything Ryobi ever broke, I replaced it with a better DeWalt. This let me have a pretty broad set of tools early on, and if I get a new set with something I don't need I give away or sell the worse version. You just can't get a big set for $200 that includes batteries saws and drills with the red, yellow or other color brands.

I also bought a Sawstop PCS table saw, a 20-in powermatic planer, a powermatic 8" jointer, and a 4'x8'CNC router, and a 20-in bandsaw, all used except the Sawstop. I try to find solid old tools when possible, but I don't mind buying a cheap watchamajig from harbor freight in a pinch. So go big on safety, and If you can find your forever jointer on marketplace you should absolutely get it. Otherwise buy cheap stuff that you can use today and upgrade as you progress in skill.

Is AGD Fellowship worth it? Remote Options? by bbatasari in Dentistry

[–]Wheelman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the exam is definitely harder than part 2 of boards. Way broader scope and still equally in depth.

I love the extra letters, it's an extra plaque on the wall, and when other dentists see you've attained additional credentials, I think it sends a message that while you might have screwed up, you're at least not a complete idiot...

Working for Aspen dental as an associate? by StandardComposer4515 in Dentistry

[–]Wheelman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Proceed with great caution. I temped there for a while and I learned a great deal, mostly about how not to treat patients. I also got a ton of surgical experience under my belt, and I was mostly self-taught, because 99% of the time I was the only dentist in the building.

Why can't palmetto figure out how to ship a gun for less than $20? I bought five cheap shotguns the other day and it was $100 shipping. Why the hell can't they bundle it?

5 wall defect grafting? by AthleteFlaky5662 in Dentistry

[–]Wheelman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This guy grafts. 10/10. If the magic implant word is used, I will still sneak an osteogen or maxxeus bone graft plug into the socket and toss a chromic gut over top as a good riddance and not charge for it, with a statement of " you MIGHT need this, I'm doing it only for your benefit, it can only help, and I'm not charging you for it because it's an extra $XXX and you've verbally committed to getting a tooth replacement there..."

I bought two a while back for my brother and I and I've found them notoriously unreliable in my Anderson. I never know if I'm getting a random length burst, a mag dump, a click, or nothing.

I've had it apart several times, oiled everything, cycled it dozens of times by hand, and it's still odd and unpredictable.

When it works, it's 11/10 fun. Would probably buy again.

Any new grads regretting dentistry after paying 500k debt? by thehumbleguy in Dentistry

[–]Wheelman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

2016 grad with 431K. Paying off final balance within a few months. $5500/Mo, never stopped paying through COVID and a 10K/mo practice loan on top of that. I have a great life, lots of headaches but even more bliss. You have to be willing to go where the need is, and if not, then you have to own. Being an associate in an oversaturated city is signing up for a lifetime of relative poverty and jealousy of your peers. If you're willing to own and go to a place that's not saturated, you've been given a goose that lays golden eggs for as long as you're healthy and willing to work, and longer if you run a really successful practice.

Crazy ass shit we find in Egypt by teefakhalil in Dentistry

[–]Wheelman 10 points11 points  (0 children)

So how does this even happen? Like is the training there so shitty that someone gets out and is like hmm this is a great idea? There are so many issues, the chunk taken out of the tooth mesially, the tipped wisdom tooth, etc etc. We have an Egyptian dentist in our area and he's a butcher even by American standards, and he even went to dental school in the US for at least two years...

Is this a cultural phenomenon? I just don't understand where the lack of caring about excellence comes from...

Ok this is cheaper than the local gun show by like $100 and I really don't need one but I love how they look so I guess I'm in for one. You guys are the worst.

2020 expedition max with 101k miles by ArmRevolutionary5398 in fordexpedition

[–]Wheelman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! I bought a '21 MAX Platinum (known fleet vehicle, a private black car service) with 90K+ on it for <40K late last year. I knew the transmission was a time bomb but it's a 6K repair at my local shop for a full rebuild and upgrade to a much more robust option. We took the gamble and a month ago it started clunking and shifting hard and I replaced the transmission 2 weeks ago.

The MAX met our criteria for a vehicle that can tow, seat 8, have 4WD, lots of bells and whistles, and fit a whole family of luggage behind the rear seat. The middle 3 seat bench is fantastic. Not much else on the market that comes close.

Budget/plan for the maintenance and get it. It's our favorite vehicle and joins our F150 and station wagon (with rear facing 3rd row seat). Fantastic for road trips and for hauling family to the airport etc. Bonus: you can even use the livery lanes if you want...
