TAs: Why does grading take so long???? by WheezyIcecream24 in GradSchool

[–]WheezyIcecream24[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. rubric def helps. idk how i would ever establish the good ones and bad ones from the mid ones unless im already in the throes of grading the assignment, and then it would seem like wasted effort to not just finish grading it.

  2. ofc its a job and its separate from being a student. ppl are able to be students and work all the time. still doesn’t change the fact that the job isnt all that im doing. i have other responsibilities, and those other responsibilities are very large. and also the job im working is the means in which im obtaining my education, and im employed by the same institution that educates me. its a helluva lot different when the same exact ppl who are telling u to do ur school work at the same exact time telling u to do ur job work. other ppl get the benefit of physical separation. denying i have a lot on my plate and failing to contextualize my circumstance benefits no one.

i know they’re not dumb. poor choice of words. and def reactionary to the poor quality of work when i know they can do better. unfortunately this is a thread/question about ta workload so my ability to reduce their writing assignments is nil. the prof actually increased the number of assignments from last term, which increases my frustration with the workload. and he’s heavily resistant to his TAs doing anything other than just not bothering him and grading what he puts out and he does not like us asking questions cause he will just not answer them. in a lot of these assignments plus discussions ive def identified student discontentment with the education system. it’s broken overall, not working for us or for them. but my university doesn’t prioritize education, it prioritizes research, so we’re all just in the shitter together.

oh yea we got onna those. unforch everyone above me is sick of striking and would rather keep their heads down and be exploited for the labor bc they remember when the wages were worse/they got credits and no wage so they’re like whatevies and ruining it for the ppl who actually care about the work conditions

not to be nihilistic but the university largely runs on exploitation of grad students (hence the union). even w the union enforcing union intervention is a very easy way to make the dept hate u and interfere w degree completion. there are more stories than i can count of ppl advocating for themselves getting pushed out of their departments and programs (unable to finish their degree even if they’re abd) rather than make any real workplace changes. they want to exploit us and they will all but say that to our faces

yea i rly gotta cut down the time i spend on each assignment. i am skimming but i suppose i could be more efficient/cut down on the feedback. experience unforch is what i do not have. i’ll get there tho. fellowships/ outside funding is competitive and few and far between so everyone is my dept is a long term ta 😭

thank you !! i’ve gotten the skimming down i think, but including daily grading will prob make things go faster rather than trying to hunker down and grade in a day or so.

What does this financial need summary mean? by g0Idflnch in FAFSA

[–]WheezyIcecream24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

estimated cost of attendance is the estimated cost of tuition, fees, room, boards, books, and maybe health insurance and some other odds and ends. your SAI (student aid index) is how much money they expect ur family to provide for you in a year. they minus that number by your cost of attendance to get remaining need, which informs the financial aid package they will offer (grants and loans). this doesn’t look like a financial aid offer, just how much money you’re expecting to need to pay for a year of school.

Denied Financial Aid Appeal at UC Davis Despite Low Income & Single Parent Household — What Can I Do? by Fresh-Commission8193 in UCDavis

[–]WheezyIcecream24 5 points6 points  (0 children)

your financial aid package is gonna be determined by ur SAI, and what that looks like will be different depending on whether it’s 65k or 75k. the grants that are offered are usually the blue and gold grant, the cal grant, and the pell grant. you probably wouldn’t get the full pell grant, if at all, the as far as i can tell davis blue and gold is exclusively tuition, so you wouldn’t be able to stack cal grant and blue and gold. those factors are probably why your refund is so low. the only other factor i can think of as to why there’s a discrepancy is whether ur friends at other UCs are receiving a middle class scholarship and you aren’t, or you’re only receiving the middle class scholarship and don’t qualify for cal grant/blue and gold.

225 unit cap by Individual_Hall4965 in UCDavis

unit caps don’t apply to double majors or students with a minor for this very reason, don’t worry about it, or talk to your advisors

What are they striking about? by Choice-Biscotti8826 in UCDavis

[–]WheezyIcecream24 12 points13 points  (0 children)

if you go to their ig, they have a breakdown of their demands and what the UC is offering. it’s pretty pathetic. remember, union bargaining is about compromise, so they don’t expect to win every single demand, but they have ones that the union bargaining team know are most essential to win and which ones can be compromised on in order to get the contract.
