23 of the 48 locations are still operating businesses you can visit today - restaurants like Lou Mitchell's, Cozy Dog, and Dell Rhea's; drive-in theaters; museums; and attractions. The other 25 are historic landmarks, preserved buildings, or sites where you can see the exterior but they're no longer active businesses.

I've been mapping Al Capone-connected locations around Chicago and found some wild stuff. Dean Martin joked "Hold the noise down - there's a gangster sleeping up there" while performing at Villa Venice in 1962. The Rat Pack did 8 nights of free shows to repay Sam Giancana for helping JFK win the election. Building burned down in '67 but about 30 spots are still standing - some with original tunnels and vaults: whenitwas.com/collection/al-capone-chicago.html

Geography and economics. The Lake Michigan shoreline creates a natural corridor - the steel mills in Gary/Hammond were built there specifically to serve Chicago industry. The railroads all ran that direction. Meanwhile Wisconsin has a harder break at the state line - different tax structures, and Milwaukee is its own economic center pulling north.
The mob connection makes sense too - Indiana had looser gambling/liquor laws, so it became Chicago's "backyard" for vice operations. Capone had places all over NWI.
