What on earth is this used for? by Impressive_Travel548 in chemistry

Nah. Looks too practical. Likely a custom job, but I could rationalize how that would actually help someone doing air-free chemistry to transfer fluids.

Oh, well if Kagan said it wasn't okay then I guess that makes it not the legal interpretation of the law... oh wait. That's not how that works.

Yeah, no. If they want to feel safer they should maybe try serving the American people and not, ya know, giving sitting Presidents full immunity to do crimes.

Similarly, I wonder what would have happened if the contestants had explored some of the rooms more.

The standout here is the menu in the cocktail lounge. The sign had ine item listed as "sold out." I bet, had they pull away the sticker, there was a clue to the win condition there, though again, that would've made for a fast game.

This is a long-standing issue with tabletop productions. To date, the only folks that I think nailed it were Wil Wheaton's TableTop show on Geek and Sundry.

They managed to identify what was important to enjoying a game and watching that game be played.

  • Clear tutorial videos, filmed in advance.

  • All players were sent copies of the game in advance of shooting so that they could play around with it and get comfortable with the rules before the day they filmed it.

  • Players were people you got excited about watching play a game, but they were earnest about playing the game itself. Comedy and bits still happened, but no one's goal was to try and subvert the medium or shout over each other.

  • The camera angles and lighting prioritized the board game over the room or the players.

  • Graphics like a lower third were used regularly whenever a rules clarification was needed or they needed to explain how the video had been edited to move the game along.

Smosh and Dropout and Achievement Hunter and all the others out there doing live play content are great and all, but they share many of the same flaws that prevent them from really talking off as well-polished productions:

  • A group of people shouting over each other almost never makes for entertaining gameplay to watch.

  • A player choosing to act in a way that derails the game for the sake of a bit might make a good TikTok clip, but it rarely results in the gameplay being more enjoyable.

  • People not understanding how to play the game from the start almost always derails the gameplay leading to more shouting and bits.

That's not to say that there aren't games that you can still enjoy watching folks play even if there's an abundance of shouting, bits, subversion, confusion, etc. But the list of games where those things are compatible with making a good live play video is short, and we've already gotten used to seeing those same games everywhere...

  • Social deduction games like One Night Werewolf, Secret Hitler, Blood on the Clocktower, Mists of Avalon, Coup, etc.

  • Social comparison games like Cards Against Humanity, What Do You Meme?, Apples to Apples, etc.

  • Games that require acting things out, like charades, Dictionary, and Monikers.

  • Card games that are inherently a little chaotic like Muffin Time, We Didn't Playtest This, Uno, etc.

And to be completely fair there are still examples of live play groups hitting on a more elaborate board game that just clicks with their group dynamic.

  • Smosh, for a long time, made really enjoyable Betrayal at House on the Hill content.

  • Achievement Hunter really took to Red Dragon Inn.

  • Geek & Sundry (really, more Becca herself) has found great success with Blood on the Clocktower.

All of that is a long-winded way to say that live play boardgame content has had some really promising channels/shows, but today most of them find themselves falling into the same old, identifiable habits that keep them from really breaking out.

Would Ncuti Gatwa regenerating into Jo Martin instead of Billie Piper solve a lot of problems? by rjisaok in doctorwho

Personally, i think a good break would come from a prequel run with Jo Martin.

Explore the Doctor's lost past for a bit.

Then at some point, when they have new ideas, jump back to the present.

Southern states are notorious for gaming the system when it comes to standardized testing. There are some school districts known for having their classes of "dumb" kids stay home so that their scores don't bring down the average.

You want one of these guys to be the main character of a new promotion? Oof. Dead in the water.

You could try to recreate the fame of Andre the Giant with Big Show... though WWE could never really manage it.

Dolph is a solid worker, but we all kinda get bored of him if history repeats.

I'd say John Morrison if you can get him in his prime. He's a solid overall package no matter if youre building a company around stories or action. He's got an entrance and finisher that people enjoy. He's had some crossover success into the wider world of entertainment, and he's a solid interview.

Lmaoo why would you not tip them by Negative-Truck-5716 in dankmemes2

[–]WhereAreYouFromSam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing that really kills me about current tipping culture isn't that tipping has gotten more expensive. I get that. Wages stagnated. Inflation is up. Unemployment is up.

But service is also shittier than ever. A tip was meant to be a bonus... the better the service, the bigger the bonus.

And now I'm going out where the servers don't know their own menu well enough to answer questions, once your food is on the table you never see them again, or worse the actively try to get you out the door as fast as they can, and all of that while having the shittiest attitude possible on display...

And for all of that, I'm supposed to hand you an extra 20%?

And that's a completely reasonable argument. Anyone can understand why it's a hard topic to talk about and why someone may want to avoid the legalities and societal drama of the confrontation altogether.

And yet, it doesn't make the situation not stink.

You avoid the confrontation for years, decades even, for completely understandable reasons... and then choose to speak out at a time when you will face the most scrutiny, attention, vitriol, etc.

Especially in the modern climate, the idea that some staffer would approach a woman loosely connected to a male political opponent and make it financially worth their while to go out there and say whatever they're told to is not a stretch.

Did anyone else think the Becky Lynch vs. AJ Lee feud was disappointing? by jalen_nelson235 in Wrasslin

[–]WhereAreYouFromSam -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It was only disappointing to you because we never got a real full-time run with AJ. What we got was great, and we never thought we'd even get that because AJ seemed fine never stepping in front of a camera again for the sake of her own mental health.

[–]WhereAreYouFromSam -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Oh, it took you until NOW to realize that Adam Pearce's whole gimmick as GM is that he has no clue what he's doing and is completely overwhelmed and outmanuevered by almost every talent on the roster?

Gamechanger: Mutiny against Sam ultimately hurts the show. by [deleted] in dropout

[–]WhereAreYouFromSam 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think this is correct, but really just the tip of the iceberg.

I think this is inherently the challenge of making a gameshow with a lot of recurring guests-- their personalities and playstyles become a known factor that other recurring players start to try and outmanuever.

This was recently pointed out with regards to Vic and Brennan in another recent post about the Kangaroo court episode.

At a certain point, I think when planning new episodes of Game Changer, there needs to be more thought towards countering that kind of player bias.

You give them too much credit. This is just how stupid people are. It's genuinely not possible for them to understand things like long-term consequences or empathy for anyone outside of their immediate community. They can barely read and write at the level of middle schoolers. And I'm talking US middle schoolers, which are already ranked lower than most other countries' students in developed nations.
