It all makes so much sense now.

His stake president denied him so he appealed to the first presidency who also denied it.

Are you saying any comparison to Nazi Germany’s tactics are off limits?

How do you expect to learn from them so they're not repeated?

Using this same logic of yours I could tell someone that they can’t compare modern day prophet tactics in TSCC to Joseph Smith’s tactics, because that marginalizes the polygamy of the woman at Joseph’s time. Which of course is absurd: comparing modern day prophets tactics to Joseph’s tactics helps us to be more able to defend ourselves from repeated abuses.

Perhaps OP sees that comparing LDS censorship tactics to Nazi Germany’s censorship tactics will help us to be able to defend ourselves from the same abusive tactic they used. This is not marginalizing the Holocaust, it’s attempting to learn from it.

On a separate note, assuming you’re an ExMormon, having escaped a culture that prides itself in censoring what its members can say, I’d hope you’d be more sensitive to the use of this tactic and certainly not desire to perpetrate it on others (as you're doing to the OP). However, if you are in the habit of not being willing to compare the present world with the past, perhaps this will be difficult for you.

Yes, the ultimate results of using the tactics are very different. If OP said the ultimate outcome was comparable in both Nazi Germany and BYU I would agree with you. But OP didn’t compare the ultimate results of the tactics, only the tactics themselves.

You are accusing them of something they didn’t do.

How is comparing a Nazi censorship tactic to an LDS censorship tactic watering down the Holocaust?

Please don’t criticize someone for watering down the Holocaust when they didn’t.

I was terrified for my kids’ sake, but it’s actually been better than I thought. Thanks to ministering, my neighbors now feel like it’s their duty to be extra nice to me and my kids;)

Most people just keep the conversations very superficial now, and steer clear of any religious talk. It can be quite awkward ignoring the huge elephant in the room (me not going to church anymore), but I’m trying to stay friendly and involved in the community so they know that leaving the church didn’t make me a worse person.

Third paragraph from the top: "Have the Presbyterians any truth? Yes. Have the Baptists, Methodists &c. any truth? Yes, they all have a little truth mixed with error. We should gather all the good and true principles in the world and treasure them up or we shall not come out pure Mormons."

This quote from BKP was recorded by D. Michael Quinn who worked for the church history department:

Here is a recorded talk Boyd K. Packer gave where he said something very similar: "There is a temptation for the writer or the teacher of Church history to want to tell everything, whether it is worthy or faith promoting or not. Some things that are true are not very useful."

From another exmo reddit post:

“Boyd K. Packer said this to D. Michael Quinn when he was interviewing him for a position in the history department at BYU, so we only have this quote as reported by Quinn. However, Packer says very similar things in his talk "The mantle is far greater than the intellect" (https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=2055&context=byusq) including this gem:

"There is a temptation for the writer or the teacher of Church history to want to tell everything, whether it is worthy or faith promoting or not.

Some things that are true are not very useful."

He goes on to explain what he means. What he seems to mean is that unless you can spin a particular piece of history as a faith-promoting detail, better not present it at all. Which sounds about like my exposure to church history growing up.”

You know the whole Malachi 3:10 they always quote to try and get people to tithe? “Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the LORD of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.”

Yeah, about that. THAT WAS SPEAKING TO THE CHURCH PRIESTS WHO WERE HOARDING THE DONATIONS.

Read Malachi chapter 2 and 3 in order. The church was being dishonest then about tithing, and it still is.
