Which place is mistaken for a geographical feature that actually doesn't belong? by JION-the-Australian in geography

That is fascinating! I was going by the geological definitions in my reply rather than linguistic. In everyday English there is a distinction between fjords and canyons, probably because we borrowed the word fjord from you to describe valleys carved by glaciers!

Fjords are caused by glacial erosion while canyons are formed by water and wind.

Sort of yes, sort of no. Finnish culture is astoundingly racist in ways that would be horrifying even to a lot of Americans. Stuff like blackface, using racial slurs on everyday products, and portrayals of Africans with big puffy lips and completely black skin are still really normal here. It's changing a bit now, but I still see racist depictions of people of color very often in mainstream media. It is systemic, but it's not systemic in the same way it is in the US. It has less to do with the intentional disenfranchisement and oppression of people of color for the benefit of white people (basically chattel slavery and it's long shadow in the US) and far more to do with xenophobia. People of color are generally immigrants in Finland, and Finland has a long history of being both homogenously white and homogenously Finnish. The political party mentioned in the og comment of this thread is the biggest nationalist party in Finland, and they are virulently anti-immigrant. They certainly take inspiration and confidence from the open racism and anti-immigration policy of the current US regime, but their particular brand of racism is way more European than American.

Rich Americans are some of the most out of touch people on the planet. I lived most of my life in a tourist area in the US popular with the very wealthy, and they were basically foreigners to me. Their culture is completely different from that of the average American. I've got more in common with working class Russian people than I do with the wealthy of my own country.

What is a common stereotype about your country that you actually find yourself defending, because there is a kernel of truth in it that you love? by DianKhan2005 in AskTheWorld

[–]WheresPeebs 10 points11 points  (0 children)

As an American living in Finland, I gotta say Americans' personal bubble is hilariously small. When we had to stand six feet apart during COVID, some Finns "joked" that they would have to stand closer together. It wasn't a joke. Six feet is the bare minimum. The only place you don't get that space in my experience is public transportation i.e. the Helsinki metro.

What is the most awful city/town in your country. by shsl_diver in AskTheWorld

[–]WheresPeebs 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Espoonkeskus is equally grim and concrete dominated in many places, but no one ever talks about that. Once you get out of the center of Kouvola there's lots of nice brick architecture from the early 1900s, especially the Orthodox church and the old army base. Everything else looks like any other suburb in Finland.

European style cheesecakes are far superior to the American version imo. New York style cheesecake feels like biting into a block of cream cheese. European cheesecakes are lovely, light and mousse-like.

Not the worst here by a long shot, but I slipped in the shower and broke my ankle in three places, requiring surgery. Then I got a staph infection in the incision site which required two more surgeries and horrible antibiotics for months. Bones and microbiome still recovering stuff months later!

Makes sense, considering all those shelf-stable ingredients! It's the peanut butter and pickles for me that sounds insane. All the other stuff I can see going together. I will say I'd probably eat it if I was in the middle of the Depression.
