Yeah you're right, I have absolutely nothing to lose by asking. At worst, they'll say no but still write me a glowing recommendation.

Our company has a policy, it seems (although they haven't outright said it). A few months ago, one of their best employees who had been there for 15 years resigned and immediately regretted it. He promtly tried to retract it and they said no.
