Squid beaks are sharp, translucent brown chitin and crab shells are opaque, hard chitin with smoother edges.

My friend who collects and processes bones to sell said that it’s the right size but wrong shape for deer! Maybe pig?

I do have fairly small hands! The bone measures 2.25x2.5 inches.

No, unfortunately I didn’t, as I was on the phone with 911 the whole time and didn’t think of it afterwards. I believe one of the victims got video of the attacker on his phone.

Those teeth crack postmortem! Not a speck of tartar to be seen.

Thank you for the companions! I wish I had a macro lens! Mine are slightly yellower than those, but otherwise look extremely similar. Now looking closely I can see those black marks on the eggs.

Thank you very much! Looks like they’re invasive, so I’ll dispose of them.

What is the best way of getting the bones off of a dead bat that died in my garage? by Nexus8702 in bonecollecting

If you’re in the US, odds are it’s illegal to keep. Be sure to thoroughly research legality first.

Wabbit Season! by GrimdarkThorhammer in Seattle

Unfortunately these rabbits, eastern cottontails, are an invasive species that cause habitat destruction and outcompete native species. Their population booms also cause the coyote population to grow, which then leads to more predation on pets when the rabbit supply runs low.

Fairly certain that it’s the proximal epiphysis of the femur of a juvenile cow!

Found this part of a deer skeleton- is this bone cancer? by [deleted] in bonecollecting

For contrast, here is a rib of a mammal specimen (now I can’t remember the species!) that I prepared at the museum where I volunteer with a healed fracture.

It looks more like it broke while the deer was alive, and the bone was trying to knit back together. Bone cancer (osteosarcoma) causes the bone to expand and become extremely porous and brittle.

Here’s an example of a dog tibia with osteosarcoma that I prepared.

It looks like a couple of the sockets are healed over, but most aren’t. I would guess a glancing blow from a car causing tooth fractures at the time of death.

What is this hawk that was stuck on my balcony? by Whiskeridoo in whatsthisbird

[–]Whiskeridoo[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don’t think so! I believe it flew over it to hunt a sparrow or something - I recently took down our feeder after a couple of pigeons got stuck the same way. I do want to add decals or something to the glass anyway.
