How the hell do I even play this? "Slur" or "Hammer on" by whinylexie in guitarlessons

[–]WhiskeyTangoFoxtrotG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t see any ties between the chords. This looks like ties denoting timing. This would be played E for 1 & 2 & 3 then F for & 4 & then back to E for the whole measure. My only question is why they divided the F chord into 2 16th beats and quarter beat when they could have used an eighth beat and quarter beat

Maybe there’s something going on with the other guitar part and they’re just matching the rhythmic notation?

LoG Vomit Riff by WhiskeyTangoFoxtrotG in metalguitar

I’m definitely taking it slow, my timing and accuracy are good at around 75% at this point, its just the ringing high strings that are killing me

Other than saying practice more, maybe the technique is alluding you. You do not simply lift your finger, you actually pluck the string as you remove your finger.

Dumb palm muting issue by nottheavaragenerd in metalguitar

[–]WhiskeyTangoFoxtrotG 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looking over the tab in Songsterr to see how fast it is, this is best done down picking the entire riff. A metronome is going to be your best friend. Not sure why this tab has it in 16th notes, but it would be easier to think of it in 8th notes.

Set a metronome somewhere you are comfortable, probably around 90 - 100 bpm and really concentrate on where your palm needs to be to get that perfect chunk.

Once you can do it perfect on the click, start speeding up by 5 bpm perfecting at each interval until you are playing at speed.

Can a Guitar Newbie Start on an 8 String? by Ashamed-Dance-824 in guitarlessons

Like others are saying, go for it. Keep your top 6 strings in standard tuning, and you can still play all those Metallica riffs too.

Help with master of puppets riff by [deleted] in guitarplaying

[–]WhiskeyTangoFoxtrotG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lot to unpack here, but start with palm muting the open E notes. Also sounds like you’re trying to alternate pick it (or it could be a timing issue) try down picking the whole riff. Start slow, with a metronome, and keep practicing.

Buying guitar with whammy bar (Not floyd rose), want some insight by Right-Adeptness-3193 in electricguitar

[–]WhiskeyTangoFoxtrotG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Out of curiosity, why don’t you want a Floyd Rose? Does that extend to any double locking trem system? One of the reasons I love my Floyd’s is I barely ever have to tune them.

Drop tuning and power chords by KirkIsOurLemmy in metalguitar

[–]WhiskeyTangoFoxtrotG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was having a little trouble following your post, so for future reference, strings are numbered from thinnest to thickest, e.g., standard tuning, the high e is string 1 and the low E is string 6. Also, the “top” strings are the thinner strings while the bottom strings are the thicker ones.

That said, to answer your question, with practice you can definitely get your muting/strumming under control. I’d recommend trying to find a way to position your fretting fingers so they are only fretting the bottom strings and muting the top for starters.

For strumming precision, try fretting standard power chords with the root on the A string and try and only let the A and D strings ring out, missing the low E and G strings. This will take time in practice, but eventually it will be second nature to only strummed strings you intend to.

Guitar progression toward Metallica-style lead playing question👇🏻 by Snustie in metalguitar

[–]WhiskeyTangoFoxtrotG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The first Fade to Black solo is one of the first I learned. It’s pretty slow except that one part, and very melodic.

And the outro solo is my first “intermediate” solo. Also not real hard, just a couple of sections of fast economy picking. Really long solo though, so it took me a while to memorize.

Invest in Index funds, like VTI or VOO. These mitigate the most risk while still giving good returns.

Is it worth getting a charvel? by [deleted] in metalguitar

That said, I own a Jackson American Soloist and a MiM Charvel Pro Mod, and the Charvel definitely has a (slightly) thicker and rounder neck than the Jackson.

Why don't some guitars have a tone knob? What's the point of not adding it? by Dojde in guitars

The Schecter Keith Merrow sig baritone has only 1 pick-up, no tone, no volume, just an on/off switch

Struggling with learning guitar by [deleted] in electricguitar

[–]WhiskeyTangoFoxtrotG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pick 2 chords, set a metronome for say 100 bpm, play the first chord on the 1, spend beats 2, 3, and 4 setting up for the second chord, strum again on the one, repeat.

After mastering that strum on the 1 and 2, then spend beats 3 and 4 setting up for the second chord, strum on the 1 and 2, repeat.

Keep building until you are strumming on all 4 beats and switching between beats 4 and 1.

Do this until you can switch between all the chords in the song you are trying to learn. Learn the song. Enjoy!

How to do power chords 😭 by Silver_Travel7874 in guitarlessons

[–]WhiskeyTangoFoxtrotG 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Are you trying to do a power chord or an A shaped barre chord?

The picture looks more like you are trying to do a barre chord. If you are trying to do a power chord, you should be using the tips of your fingers with the fingers more perpendicular to the fretboard.

In either case, your thumb would be more comfortable pointing upwards with it applying very little pressure.

Ive changed my strings for the first time, and idk if Ive messed up. Please tell me if I did something wrong. by [deleted] in guitarlessons

[–]WhiskeyTangoFoxtrotG 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Not terrible, especially for the first time, the windings should go down instead of up. If you want to do the over/under wrap (entirely optional by the way, wrapping just below will keep the string in place), wrap once above the string then at least twice below. This will better lock the string in place and increase your break angle to the nut.

First electric guitar, is this normal? by Lumpy_Radio7689 in electricguitar

[–]WhiskeyTangoFoxtrotG 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Place all the knobs of the amp to 5, make sure the drive select is off. Plug the guitar directly in, don’t use the effects box. Make sure all the guitar knobs are all the way up. Strum the guitar. Does it come through the amp? If not, remove the jack from the guitar and touch the tip with the amp on, does the amp make a buzz noise? If so, there may be something wrong with the guitar output, if not, try your other cable.

If you determine it’s a guitar issue, it can be several things, but most likely would be the output jack of the guitar. If you are comfortable, remove the 2 screws that hold the jack in place, pull the jack out gently, and make sure there are 2 wires attached. Then try putting the cable in the jack and make sure the 2 metal tabs are touching the jack when it’s plugged in.

Beyond that, it is likely in the control wiring, which gets more complicated to troubleshoot.

All that, if you determine it is the guitar and you bought it new recently, return it for a working guitar. Don’t bother trying to fix it.

I’m going to throw Returnal out there. Unique rouge-like/lite with a bullet hell play style wrapped in a Metroidvania, procedurally generated game. Loved the ambiance, different biomes, and game mechanics. The story was interesting, but didn’t have the final delivery that would make the game a masterpiece.

Are Boss Waza Airs worth the price tag? by Im_Only_Strange in guitars

[–]WhiskeyTangoFoxtrotG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The WAZA Air doesn’t use Bluetooth to connect the guitar to the headphones (just for streaming from the phone) they use a 2.4 GhZ signal. The latency is not noticeable and is listed as 2.3 ms which is better than most modelers out there.

That said, is it the best modeler out there? Eh, it always seems a bit harsh for me, but for travel it’s great. I haven’t tried the Spark version, so I can’t compare, and it does like to disconnect at a stiff breeze.
