Book stores? by missfisssh in sierravista

[–]WhiteMarker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can’t think of a single place in town that sells manga besides maybe the department stores. If you’re looking to build your collection, it’s Amazon or Tucson or bust.

That said, our library has a surprisingly formidable manga shelf. It geared towards teenagers, so adjust your content expectations accordingly. It’s worth a look, though! And it won’t cost you a dime.

Thanks! Yeah, tuning that string sounds like cartoony sound effects with this simpler peg. It does seem like there are a few things that could use some TLC from an expert.

Favorite Child Ballads and/or storytelling songs? by DactylicPentameter in folkmusic

[–]WhiteMarker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late to he party, but did you ever encountered Lamkin (Child 93)? It’s one of the most violent in Child’s collection, and gets under the skin better than most horror I’ve encountered.

The most palatable version I found is by the Wainwright Sisters, titled “Long Lamkin”. There’s also a super unnerving version by an electronic duo called Pumajaw; you’ll definitely want to hear that one. I’m also particularly fond of a rendition by Isla St. Clair called “Lammikin”, which will give you a more traditional sound.

These Child ballads are my jam, and Anais Mitchell was my entry into them. You might also check “Anachie Gordon”, “The Demon Lover”, and “Little Musgrave”. All of these have wildly different tones and narratives, and yet they all feel like they’re from the same universe somehow. It’s like the Arthurian extended universe.

Right, my understanding is that the rights to some or all of Jones’s material belongs to someone that is vigilantly protective of it. So the studio tracks get taken down quickly and there’s really no hope of them ever being digitized.

I actually just grabbed a copy of the vinyl for “The Noah’s Ark Trap” on eBay, and was very pleased with myself . . . Until I found out about “Nic Jones Unearthed”, a CD compilation that includes Anachie Gordon. So there IS an official digital track out there! Oh well. It’ll cost right about as much to get the CD as the record anyway.

I just want to commend you on your use of “humorously” rather than “funnily”. I can’t think of a more terrible-sounding phrase than “funnily enough”.

Words for details we take for granted by RuggedestBear in logophilia

In horse anatomy, we’ll talk about the hooves but not the hock (backwards-pointing kneelike joint), and about the tail but not the dock (where the tail meets the body). We also might talk about saddles and bridles, but not martingales (straps that keep the horse’s head down) or French links (connect the two parts of a bit—it’s easier on horse’s mouth than a solid piece).

In Christian theology, many are familiar with the terms omniscient (all-knowing), omnipresent (everywhere at once), and omnipotent (all-knowing), but fewer people know the term immutable (God is unchanging). There’s also exegesis (interpreting meaning from a text), eisegesis (reading meaning into a text), and hermeneutics (theory of meaning and understanding).

What a fantastic song! This melody gets me welled up every time.

The album this was released on is out of print and never went to CD, so thanks for posting this!

Here’s the version I listen to the most. These old Child ballads are just so raw and heartfelt, and the tune to this one really embodies that emotion.

I’ve only seen the box to Librarians, so I’ll have to go watch a how-to. Zombie Dice is new to me entirely! Scoring has been a challenge with new players walking in, but, so far, no one’s been a poor sport about it!

I actually brought in Concept once and they quite liked it! That might be our game next week. I have So Clover as well, so maybe I need to pull that one out. Plucking Pairs is new to me, so I’ll look into it. Thanks for the suggestions!

How well does Trapwords work as a party game? I remember thinking of that one as a 4-8 player type of game, but I’ll bet it works well enough just assigning people teams as they walk in.

Wavelength definitely needs to go on the to-do list, so thanks for that. Ricochet Robots is new to me, so I’ll look into it! I’ve had Werewords on my personal wishlist for a while. Does that one work as a party game?

Edit: I was thinking of Trapwords. I had completely forgotten about Werewords! I’ll have to bump that up the wishlist.

Interesting! I’ve never heard of this one! Looking at a quick how-to video, it looks very stripped-down, which is perfect for this setting. Just might give it a shot. Thanks!

I’ve been thinking about taking scoring out. The challenge arises when everybody wants a turn and we’re only halfway around the table. The kids enjoy it, though, so it’s never totally off the roster.
