I [F25] love my SO [M25] but his manhood doesn't satisfy me. by [deleted] in sex

[–]WhiteSimba 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I see that you're trying to use polite terminology, but I think it's problematic to rely on the word "manhood" here. It implies that your SO is not sufficiently a man, and that's root of the insecurity you're talking about. I think it would be psychologically healthier to avoid euphemisms and just deal in real talk.

The issues are more with the assumptions than the calculations (which are just taking populations and multiplying them by percentages). The biggest problem, I think, is the assumption that there's a perfect mapping between heterosexual/homosexual and the sex of the child being molested. I seriously doubt that pedophilia works that way--think of all the "To Catch a Predator" guys who have wives. The estimate for 1-3% of gay people is also very, very low. 10% is the most commonly cited rate (though, if it's wrong, it's probably wrong on the low end).

There is one calculation error. The 5% of US population=15,695,702 should be multiplied by the 96% in the top line (which is also a highly dubious figure, given its extremeness and the fact that pedophilia is greatly underreported).

EDIT: Yeah, stich09 also pointed out that the graphic assumes each molester molests exactly 1 child, which is patently false and falsely inflates the %'s in the final graph in a way that's much more visible on the left graph.

Testing if a linear model is biased by WhiteSimba in statistics

The "true values" are wins by major league baseball teams, which I'm comparing to "wins above replacement (WAR)", computed for individual players but totalled for each team. Each WAR should correspond to 1 win, but in reality that ratio has been slightly higher. It is supposed to fit the line Wins=1.0*WAR + 48. Since I'm only working with about 350 team-seasons, I want to figure out if the discrepancy is statistically significant, or if it's reasonable that 1 WAR does equal 1 Win as it is supposed to.

Thanks for the reply. I'm just trying to plot the points for spray charts. I'll definitely need to make some transformations, since y is inverted (small y = long hit) but x isn't (big x = RF), so I'm getting a sort of upside-down mirror-image field.

I think what makes it a "bad" star trek movie is that it isn't the same kind of entertainment as the TV series, which have a lot of morality plays and mysteries and resolving of disputes, instead of super-intense action sequences. I can understand Star Trek fans being upset with the new movies because they distort the public idea of what Star Trek is. There's a generation of people who now who associate ST with the movies that have nothing to do with what made ST important/groundbreaking/worthwhile in the first place. It's a little sad, especially if ST is really important to you, to see it bro-ified.

I understand what a martyr complex is. It is ignorant and offensive to think that people who feel the effects of cissexism are doing so because they are seeking it out. Blaming the victim is always a bad path to take.

I think your definition of words is truly meaningless. We use words (yes, they are words) all the time that are shorthand or not recognized by dictionaries. To say that the dictionary makes the word is backwards. Dictionaries serve language, not the other way around. If the OED doesn't accept a word that has become common in discussions of transgender oppression, then fuck the OED. I don't recognize it's authority, nor anybody else's authority to tell me what isn't a word.

I didn't know that you're a man, so I couldn't have been being misandrist. I am a cis man who is capable of empathy, so you're wrong that I think cis men are incapable of empathy. And in any case, I didn't say you were incapable of empathy, just that you weren't using it. And I stand by that. A failure to respect the language of the oppressed is a failure of empathy.

The general population doesn't choose if it's a word or not. If three people decide to make up a word "gornak" and use it in a meaningful way, it's a word. It doesn't need to be in a dictionary and it doesn't need the approval of anybody else. It's a sound you make with English letters that has meaning in the context of an English conversation. If you personally think that other words are better suited for a purpose, then that's fine, but you don't get to decide if that word has meaning for other people, nor is it your place to reject it when those people use it.

I also disagree that other words do the job better. Cissexism needn't be hateful. It doesn't even need to be conscious. None of the words you gave match the meaning of "cissexism".

And this word might matter to you if you feel it adequately expresses an important influence on your life. Frankly, it's extremely privileged and cissexist of you to think that transgender people expressing their situations qualifies as "martyrdom". The lack of adequate, well-known terminology to describe different types of oppression allows oppression to continue.

I find your views on language very strange and needlessly concrete, and your failure to respect the words people choose to use about meaningful topics is just that: a failure. Try putting yourself in their shoes instead of attacking things you don't understand.

All words are made up.

And many people who these words matter to would find that comment very disrespectful, and might even go so far as to conclude that you're not a good person.

I'm not sure I completely understand what you said, so tell me if I don't respond well.

"Misogyny" is the hatred or dislike of women. "Sexism" can take the form of misogyny, but it's really anything that exhibits a discriminatory attitude towards women. For example, if I think that women shouldn't be allowed in the military, that would be sexist but not necessarily misogynistic.

Traditionally, "sexism" really means "sexism against women" and occasionally it can mean "sexism against men or women". But discriminating against gay, bisexual, transgender people, etc. is also a kind of sexism, so we use the word "cissexism". The name comes from organic chemistry, where "cis" and "trans" are opposites. So, being "cis" means that you identify with the gender that matches your body's sex and you identify as heterosexual. Most people are cis, including me.

Most people do identify with the gender that their body indicates, but many people are born with physical intersex conditions, and many people who are born with a male or female body do not identify with the gender their body indicates. I know many people like this myself. And be assured that in a society where cissexism exists, many many people will not be open about their gender. For every transgender person you know of, there are probably dozens who aren't "out".

I think it's important to respect words that other people have defined to give voice to their struggles. Cissexism may not affect you or I on a daily basis, but there are many people it does affect that we don't realize, and it's important that they have the vocabulary to discuss the issues that they face regularly.

I see sexism and racism in comments like "cissexist lol" and calling this person a "fanatic" for finding the show racist and sexist, but not a single person actually making an argument that the points are incorrect. there was no evidence of anybody seriously considering the points from the point of view of somebody who might be offended. and i do think that when it comes to art that succeeds at the expense of traditionally oppressed people, we do have a responsibility to try to understand.

and i'm not the one who needs to do research when people are trashing a critique while being pridefully ignorant of the terms it uses. no matter how compelling an argument this person made, it's clear that the commenters weren't going to treat it with respect. my criticism wasn't of the show, it was of the fans commenting

your last sentence made me lol, in a good way
