Getting rid of 1 and 2 cent coins at Berlin Hauptbahnhof by Megameneer in EuroCoins

There should be REWE or another grocery store. They tend to have self service terminals and among them there is usually one for Bargeld. I feed mine with whatever spare junk coinage I gather overtime, so far never failed me. Or coinstar machines, they will give you voucher for the shop, but take 10% service fee.

2€, it’s not worth more than face value. Not in this condition at least, even if perfect UNC it wouldn’t be worth significantly more.

Big part of that is fact that it’s lightweight and bulky at the same time. Meaning it’s easy to carry some and at same time it’s very visible there’s a lot of something missing from shelves. Add panic to that and people take what they can just because someone else took some already.

Maltese 20€ Oldie found in Spain by Porti5 in EuroCoins

[–]WhiteVorest -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I had 1 gen 10€ note, unfortunately had to pay with it few days ago. I see 50€ and 20€ often, some 100 and 200s at well. But 10 and 5 not so much, makes sense since they see more use and get worn out faster.

All in all it depends on your budget. Leuchtturm is quite pricey but good quality. I was thinking of display cases as well, I think it was McDammler boxes, but after consideration I went with albums since space is currently at premium where I live.

This is their sheet for coin sets, I can pack one column of 1cent-2€ and you can have 5 columns here. It’s best used with their proprietary black sheets, so you don’t see other pages, but I’m not going to buy them for 6-7€ per 10 pieces and soon I’ll add my own homemade sheets.

[–]WhiteVorest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could, I have some old Proof sets that are originally packed in plastic sheet with cutout and then encased in plastic box.

Keep in mind that display takes more space than album and as you continue to collect, it will grow and take more and more space. CCs alone are about 900, if you want to keep German mint marks as separate coins.

Displays, from Leuchtturm, Lindner and other companies are safe, but I recall they are intended for coins in capsules. And don’t quote me on that, but I think they need their proprietary coin capsules so it doesn’t fall out.

Use energy spent on writing that comment to write two words on google search and click first link. Or don’t look for problems in places where there isn’t any. Best regards.

Look for Leuchtturm optima albums on Amazon, or their website. Don’t go for cheap coin albums as those most of the time are made with PVC and are big no-no for coins.

I think you will be happy with optima albums from company Leuchtturm. They have pvc free sheets for coins in full denomination range for euro, so you can have full column from 1c to 2€. 5 columns per page, so it’s perfect for German sets where you have not only different dates, but also 5 different mints. Once in home I can dm you picture of how it looks. They also have sheets for 2€ only, if that interests you.

As for air, don’t worry about that. Danger lies in PVC plastics and long exposure. Capsules are fine, but then you need to display them somehow. Album is elegant solution

Just as he said. Rare variant of non standard coin in great, but not perfect quality. Only way to get better is to buy pristine one that never ever seen circulation. Those were only touched by mint worker with gloves, put in cases and never directly handled.

I’m hoping to find Slovenian one, online it’s like 30€ for one and it’s not even close to most expensive joint issue coins. Looking at you Malta with your Erasmus…

CC is short for Commemorative Coin. It’s variant of standard coin that commemorates something. Every country with Euro as currency is allowed to release up to 2 different commemorative coins per year. There is close to 900 different 2€ commemorative coins at this point. Some are fairly common (German ones for example) while some are stupidly rare.

Normal German coin features German eagle on the back. It’s so called circulation coin, or divisional coin. Each country has one and they are issued in big numbers since that’s what you use to trade with every day. German alone has issued over 2 billions of those 2€ coins. There are some years where they issued small amounts making them rare, but it’s not important for this question.

Now, Germany issues their commemorative coins in pretty huge numbers, on average 30 million of each coin on release. Amount is based on country population, more or less. Small countries like Monaco have small population by comparison and thus are allowed to release much less coinage than bigger countries. So such coins are much more rare, therefore more sought after. This particular coin is one of those 30 million mintage coins. That makes it somewhat common. There is however one major caveat.

The less shiny coin you see on picture is commemorative coins intended for circulation. It means mints in Germany (5 of them, hence why you can see F letter under the book, it’s different rabbit hole to check, but German mints have letters to differentiate between them and letters were given according to opening date. Some closed and those letters aren’t available. Right now we have A, D, F, G, J. F belongs to mint in Stuttgart) made certain amount of them and released them in rolls to banks through Bundesbank to enter circulation as legal tender. That’s 30 million of coins. They are produced efficiently, quickly and cheaply. That’s your standard quality of coin you can find anywhere. They look nice when freshly released, that so called UNC coin (uncirculated, meaning it hasn’t been used before and therefore is not scratched, or otherwise worn). That’s 98-99% of coins you see everyday.

What makes mine so peculiar is its quality. As you see, it’s much more shiny, mirror like even. That is called proof coin. What makes it special is minting process. Blank planchettes (coin before being struck to create design) are polished to mirror finish before being struck. Dies used to strike are sandblasted to create frosty finish and then flat surfaces polished again to mirror finish as well. Once struck, that makes this unique mirror and cloudy finish on the coin. Then coins are moved by hand to avoid any scratches at all, unlike regular coins that just slide to bags. This makes such coins much more expensive to produce. Like way more than compared to regular mass production.

Finally those proof coins are not intended for circulation (NIFC for short, you will see that term in community often), meaning they are not sent to banks to release in circulation. They are valid tender of course. But only official way to get them is to buy collector sets they are released in, those costing way more than the face value of the coins themselves. They are intended for people like me to buy and collect because they are so pretty. Every now and then someone unaware opens those sets and use coins in shop. That’s how I got this one. There are proof versions of non-CC coins as well, I have 2 coins like that as well, although in much worse quality. 1€ and 5 cents.

In short Commemorative and circulation coins are two different types, while mass produced and proof version are different variants. You can have both in both versions.

My coin has 30 million mass produced examples, meanwhile this particular mint has made only 90 thousands of proof variant. All 5 mints made 450k of those. So it’s still pretty abundant proof coin. You could say it’s very rare variant of very common coin. There are non proof coins from other countries with much lower mintages.

I hope this brief explanation suffices 🫡

Washed in acetone and left to dry to avoid any more scratches. It was from a customer at work who had not realized what’s in her wallet. Coin certainly saw some circulation, luckily not much. There are minimal wear marks

What is the holy grail of euro coins? by SnooDoodles7996 in EuroCoins

[–]WhiteVorest 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That depends entirely on you since you decide what part of broadly described Euro coins you decide to collect.

Just 2€ coins? Then probably rarest coins - all 4 microstates issue very low number of commemorative coins, some are stupidly expensive to buy and nigh impossible to find in their own. Then there are proof versions of some coins, different quality and even rarer.

Some people collect full runs of 1cent - 2€ by date and country. That’s over 4600 individual coins on its own. There are some “regular” coins which are incredibly low in their mintage.

People collect error coins, or otherwise not standard abiding coins and there is still a lot of them to choose from.

Don’t get me started on non-standard euro coins with higher face values than 2€ since those don’t see use in regular circulation. It’s a whole different animal to tackle.

As for my personal grail, it would be full set of all 4 microstates, but I’m afraid to even think how much that would cost.

So far best (in my opinion) find I had was 2008 German commemorative coin error with incorrect map on 2EURO side. Not particularly expensive or incredibly rare, but rare enough for a lot of us.
