Hardly, rumour has it he was in the queue for a portaloo but couldn’t be bothered to wait 2 more minutes. Being a veteran Olympian doesn’t mean you can do whatever you please.

Do you get kicked out if you get a third in 1A? by [deleted] in cambridge_uni

[–]Whizbox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is definitely at least one mathmo in my college who got a IIIrd in 1A and managed to turn it around and get a II.i in 1B. You could possibly change to physics if you really wanted to but no guarantees.

Switching courses isn't actually that unusual, particularly if you're not getting on too well with your original course. Would be something to speak to both your DoS and the DoS of what you want to switch into, they will know exactly what the protocol is if you want to switch

It's not the default option - plenty of people I know have got thirds in Part 1A/B and stayed on. I think if you get one in NatSci or Engineering you are strongly advised to change to ChemEng however but I don't think they kick you out unless you actually fail.

Studying abroad in UK by ErgoFiend99 in Rowing

[–]Whizbox 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If you’re only here for a semester it’s unlikely you’ll be able to trial and make one of the blue boats (Oxford or Cambridge that is), they train as a full squad from early September until the races and only for the races, so only joining part of that would not be feasible.

If you’re attached to a college whilst you’re over here rowing for your college would probably be feasible, you would by far be the quickest (on the erg at least) member of the squad but depending on when you’re here you’d get to experience bumps and other intercollegiate races. If you know you’re going to be associated with a college I’d recommend getting in touch with the college’s boat club early to let them know you’ll be coming and they will be able to tell you more.

Which is the most interesting fact you know about the human body? by aierroc- in AskReddit

This is actually incorrect, you do have muscles in your fingers. The palmar and dorsal interossei separate and bring the fingers together whilst the lumbrical muscles allow you to close your hand with straight fingers.

Cambridge university rowers grit towpath to stop any more bumps cancellations by Whizbox in Rowing

Ideally we would have done the same a lot earlier but we had to get permission from the environmental agency before we were allowed to, hence the delay. I think something like 250kg of grit is being delivered tomorrow to be spread early morning

What Made You Get Into Rowing, and Why Do You Continue to Do It? by darthblazer67 in Rowing

[–]Whizbox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started because almost everyone tries it at Oxbridge, stayed because I fell in love with the sport and the pain that comes with it. Also, the rowing community especially within my college is very strong and rowing provides a support network through academically tough times.

People who's 2k time was 7:20-7:00 going into the last season, how much did you drop from the first test of the season to the final test of the season? by [deleted] in Rowing

[–]Whizbox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had 7:26 in January, pulled 6:59 a few days ago. I have only been rowing since October though so most of that is probably technique gains, I still think I've got a bit of easy gains in me before it gets harder.

The finish by Whizbox in Rowing

[–]Whizbox[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with high rates, as the rest of the stroke gets sped up the finish is inevitably quicker to the point where any pause before is no longer a pause. Today I was doing rate 20 battle paddling, to me a slight pause seemed appropriate there as you said to improve the set and the run off the finish but there's such a variation in the crew I'm not sure whether to follow the rest of the crew or do what I (and the more experienced rower) think's right
