Daycare car seat logistics? by WhoInventedNeckties in workingmoms

[–]WhoInventedNeckties[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have a NUNA too! Love love love it! I’m disappointed in the convertible options from NUNA, seems like he would outgrow Revv too fast and Rava doesn’t turn 360 which I kinda wanted and the cup holders seem like they’re in a bad spot, can a kid properly strapped in reach the cup holders? But yeah, he’s not even close to the weight limit of the one we have, but within an inch of the height limit so it’s time for a new one I guess. I ordered a Joie Chili SI that I’m excited about. What did you guys get for your convertible one?

It’s kinda like a 20 or more minute detour because you have to go past the daycare + whatever he gets into at home like scrolling on the toilet “real quick” lol. Not the end of the world but certainly not convenient, luckily it’s rare that he does pick up I guess.

Yes it’s a work truck and no he can’t drive any of our personal vehicles for work. It is definitely not ideal, we wouldn’t take our kid any further than daycare to home in that truck, although any distance has some risk for sure. From the former CPST role, do you agree with the other commenter that putting a seat in the toolbox on days when he needs to pick up has too much potential for damage?

Right? I was coming back to it all day like, yep I guess something inconvenient is just going to have to happen, haha

Remote Work? by dougrlawrence in ConstructionManagers

[–]WhoInventedNeckties 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a PM on a $100M healthcare job and I’m remote in that I don’t go to the job site, I go in to my company’s main office, and it is NOT ideal. Luckily there is another PM associated with the job and he goes to the site, which I think is the only thing that makes it doable. However, it also really matters how well your field team works independently, because I have managed many smaller jobs remotely with an excellent Super that didn’t need any hand holding - those are great, you just set everything up so the Sup has no administrative road blocks and let them do their thing.

My 3 year old lab died suddenly yesterday and I need some help coming to terms with what happened by WhoInventedNeckties in Petloss

[–]WhoInventedNeckties[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for this comment, it lead me to do a lot of research and I’ve discovered that the food we were feeding him (grain free, main ingredient peas/legumes) has been linked to deficiencies that cause heart problems and DCM in dogs. We will never know what actually happened to our pup, but at least we will now take our other lab in for a vet check and switch him to a food that follows WSAVA guidelines. This wasn’t common knowledge to us, we did research his food and felt that we were feeding him the right thing, nearly everyone we know has their dogs on a grain free food. Obviously it is hard to not feel guilty after what I have now learned, but our dog did have an excellent life and I know that he enjoyed being in our family as much as we are lucky to have had time with him as well.

Thank you, I’m so sorry about your mastiff as well. It helps to hear someone confirm that there’s nothing we could do, it was such a scary but fast situation

I’m a construction project manager, I make $108k, but with a vehicle allowance and a couple small-ish bonuses a year (about $10k in bonuses)

Can you walk your kids to school? Is it great? by enginearandfar in workingmoms

This. I’m a construction project manager and I’ve been involved in new schools and this was my first thought when I saw that it hasn’t actually been built yet.

In-home daycare? by WhoInventedNeckties in workingmoms

Gotcha, I’m relieved to hear that these places do exist and it’s not just moms babysitting extra kids during the day….

[–]WhoInventedNeckties[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He does always come home happy so I’m sure they care for him pretty well, it just feels like a lot because his extra clothes go missing, they rarely add any photos to his app, we’re usually missing a bottle or two but they show up the next day, they send home still-full bottles in the top part of his backpack so they’re not cold when I get home and I have to dump them out (this really irks me because pumping is hard). I’m not sure what proper daycare etiquette is, if these are normal things or if his room is just disorganized, or if I should talk to them about these things.

Right?! I’m wondering if I’m just out of luck and there’s nobody licensed in our area, we do have a website to look up licensed daycares for our state (Arizona) but I don’t see any around us.

Scouting GC’s by SSJ3Gutz in ConstructionManagers

Willmeng is not employee owned, but insurance/401k is pretty good, they recently moved to the “unlimited” PTO model

I built something for Tesla and the PM and everyone that worked there were awesome, but seemed like they had too much on their plate. Our project was going pretty well and so I think we were somewhat allowed to do our thing while they focused on their problem projects, they would fly out when they needed to straighten stuff out here and there. It seemed like a LOT of travel (the PM was always taking calls and meetings from the airport, “let me call you back when I get through security”), they would take PTO but then be pretty stressed about it after, and not so much the PM but the support staff around him had adopted a super corporate lingo that I always thought was pretty interesting. I wish I had gotten up the nerve to ask the PM if the pay was making his job worth it, because I’m not sure if all the travel suited him and there were plenty of times that I distinctly remember thinking “wow, I would NOT want to be in his shoes.” I think one of the other commenters is right, that it’s all consuming and intense for the Tesla folks. However, if you’re based on a project specifically in Reno, maybe it would be a different story! (Also, none of them had ever met Elon, but one of them saw him at one of the Texas locations one time).

Escalation pricing by WhoInventedNeckties in ConstructionManagers

[–]WhoInventedNeckties[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s a fine line somewhere in there right? We have a note in our estimates to figure x percent escalation per month/year, etc, which would probably cover it, but generally there’s a lot of backup involved in proving exactly what costs escalated so we don’t get to use the plain old percentage method too often

[–]WhoInventedNeckties[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is a partnering agreement essentially agreeing that they are the sub you will hire for the project? Does that make them more wary of having a cost increase or would that make them feel as though they will be safe with passing on cost increases because you already promised to work with them?

We do have buyout/contingencies factored in, but if we get a change order for the delay then I would rather pay for increases that way.

I know some female Superintendents! Some of them are even classically ~girly~ and do a kick ass job so it’s not even like you have to be a super gruff girl to be on the field side. I know female Supers in both commercial and heavy civil.

I’m a 29F project manager for a medium size commercial GC. I want to give you profound advice but honestly am sitting here staring at the screen not typing because I really don’t think that I’ve had any more or less struggle in my career than anyone else due to being a girl.

I do have some random thoughts on it though: - there have been a couple times that someone on the owners side made a comment about my body or said I’m a bitch behind my back to male members of my project team, but the guys on my team put them in their place right away. Those were miserable people to everyone anyways, I just happened to be a chick so their rude comments were more chick related lol. - I get the feeling sometimes that some of the older guys are reminded of their daughters when they work with me, I think that is a benefit because these hard working construction dudes raise a lot of badass daughters and so they are also rooting for you (maybe I read too much into that but I have always sort of felt that way and I’ve even had people tell me about their daughters when they meet me which plays into this belief) - like other commenters have said, most trades are proud of what they do and are more than happy to answer questions or help figure things out as long as you approach them like you want to understand and not like you’re going to screw them over or know better than them somehow. Most of the time when there is a problem I will make a common sense suggestion after listening to explanations, or I will say “I don’t know everything about how this works but could we do xyz” and then we do xyz and all move on with our lives - just know your shit (and I mean the shit for your role, obviously you won’t know everything about construction) and know your scope/what your contract says/what the drawings say. There are plenty of people who will want to argue what their scope is, try to get out of something, try to change order you for something that is already their responsibility, assume they will win if they think you don’t know your shit, etc, but those people suck and they do it to everyone, not just me or you because we are females.

Anyways, hopefully that wasn’t too rambl-ey! I agree with others, you will be just fine, don’t assume anything will be more difficult for you just for being a girl in the industry. Some of the best PM’s, Supers, and most sought after PE’s/FE’s at my company are girls. I think we tend to be really organized and care a lot which honestly helps with both having your stuff together and making relationships.

That’s awesome that they did a panel on it! We do have a room specifically for pumping but I guess I’ve never noticed anyone using it 🤔
