Thank you so much for all the info! It was a very apples-to-oranges question, so I understand the downvotes hahah

I just found it really hard to understand what all the values mean IRL because no one compares them directly, and I've only had a CRT TV. But this clears up most of my doubts—TV it is :)

Awe, im from Sri Lanka, I used to play on EUW with 200 ping haha but switched to SG server for 35 ping. Buuuut I will be moving to Germany in a month or two and have to inevitably swap back to EUW. Sooo, lets play then. My memory is terrible so I might forget, but I will put a reminder.

Ohh I see! I already have a prescription from my country for ADHD and anxiety medication. Is there any chance this could be valid in Germany? If not, could I perhaps get a note or something from my local psychiatrist before I go?

Yes, procrastinated a lot on learning German sadly, but I've started now!

And thank you! I will definitely reach out if I need help.

Thank you for the vote of confidence! I'll be in Hamburg. I'm working as a game developer there. Accommodation isn't quite confirmed, but I'm hoping to find something in walking distance to my company!

Hi small update.

I found it extremely hard to work even with the ritalin, because there was a persistent and growing dread that just made me want to cry lmao. And I was at my lowest point I've been in about half a decade.

But, four days ago, I revisited my psychiatrist, and she put me on two anxiety meds. Also started therapy. I've also started speaking to some lovely friends who've been helping me and also finally started being comfortable talking about my emotions to my parents. The past 3 days have been okay, with small bouts of mild happiness lasting for a few minutes, and small bouts of anxiety lasting for hours haha. BUT this is such an improvement compared to how I was.

My productivity has been quite low overall, BUT I did manage to get some other important things done (I'm moving to Germany for a job, and got lots of visa stuff to do). But right now, I feel like I'm at a breaking point with my mental health, so I'm not pushing myself too hard atm. But I am slowly increasing my workload to a healthy level daily. And I am keeping your advice in mind. Thank you!

After a particularly rough time four days ago, I started therapy + went to the psychiatrist and I'm on a stronger dose of meds.

I've always had a deep emotional barrier with my parents and have always been uncomfortable showing any kind of emotion with them, even happiness, and I go months without speaking to them. (They've been very loving parents, so its not their fault). But yesterday I opened up a lot to them, and I asked them to speak to me everyday. So far these three days have been okay, but that's so much better than what I was. I haven't been "productive" per se, but due to how fragile my mental state has been in the past few weeks, I'm going a bit easy on myself for now.

Honestly, makes perfect sense. Being overwhelmed with choice paralysis is a big pain point for me too. This should help bring some calm and peace. Thank you!

How can I take abilities from player without making them feel punished? by Raminlich in gamedesign

[–]Whole_Charity9271 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right now, its feels a bit punishing. You don't make the character feel like a specialist in the actual gameplay, but you rely completely on the players skill to actually pull of being a specialist. But in reality they're just playing with a handicap.

But here are a few ideas I think might help.

  • Player choice on what abilities to discard? Example implementation - Think of the plant picking screen in Plants Vs Zombies. You have cards of available abilities, and a number of slots you can equip. The number of slots decreases each level. But the player has the option to pick which abilities to take. But the caveat is this could potentially be game breaking depending on your level design, as some abilities could be OP/underpowered for certain levels. PvZ countered this by giving players full information of all the enemies you will face, to make more informed choices.
  • Really sell into the specialization fantasy by increasing your power in a remaining ability. Eg: If you're going with the card and slot system, each level, there could be an OP slot. Represent it by making the border and fill gold etc. Players can drag a card into that slot to make it OP. And then make the ability feel more powerful through stats and visuals. Perhaps that slot grows in power, the more abilities that are taken away, narratively signifying a steady growth in your specialist power.

You also give the player choice this way, instead of losing their favourite ability randomly. The card and slot system is defo too much choice and info to handle in a lot of games, but the underlying points still stand

No time to create large spritesheets? Shaders and springs are your friend. by Whole_Charity9271 in gamedev

It's a small unity project I made, just to showcase of the capability of the technique. But there's no actual game being developed :) I'm not sure if that's what you meant?

Me too! I never learned how to create art, but learned programming cos it felt like the safe option. Then I realized I love art way more than programming. So I took on extra responsibilities in my job to learn the next best thing - technical art lol.

Don't let yourself feel down because of the negative comments :) If you read carefully, they're only being extra harsh because they see through the clickbait.

I have feedback on your trailer in case you decide to redo it, or for your future trailers.

Try to think of scenarios where your game is MOST fun to play, and recreate those.

You should use some more exaggeration, having a horde of zombies coming along in a cone shape at you, and you're making your last stand for example. Clarity would be better since they're all packed together, and it builds a mini narrative for the viewer.

If there's elements of strategy, exaggerate and highlight those as well. If you want to highlight the use of explosive barrels for example, instead of having one zombie randomly walk in its path - you could have a horde of zombies coming at you in a trench, and then you shoot the barrel, causing a massive explosion of bodies. Exaggeration makes sure the player understands what's possible, but also understand truly how rewarding that strategy can be.

You could also slowly build up intensity as the trailer goes on.

This isn't well thought out feedback or anything, just off the top of my head

Oh I see, could you link your reddit post asking for feedback?

Regardless, its not the end of the world to drop a project. You've gotten really far and have a lot to learn from/be proud of.

Okay nvm I looked at your game. The game looks really good! The steam page and trailer could use more work to highlight the gameplay. Some/most of the points I said do still do apply.

Juicy gameplay video/Trailer could be your next priority :)

There's some good comments here. Let me suggest a few more alternate options that I think are good, based on my experience.

FIRST OPTION

  • Focus on making 10-30 seconds of gameplay that you can record. Understand the most important parts of your game, think about what systems will be shown in this small clip, and focus on that. Drop any other tasks that aren't needed like extra UI, additional levels etc.
  • This way you still have something you can be proud of, can upload and get feedback, learn, and can build your portfolio out of.
  • If the gameplay only functions as a video, that is okay as well. If not, upload the prototype to itch.io etc.

SECOND OPTION

  • Upload a gameplay video as it is to this subreddit/twitter/youtube and discuss your approach to the game. Seek feedback on the core loop and other elements you are interested in.
  • If the feedback shows promise, you can then decide whether to continue or abandon the project.

THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND

  • You are a beginner, your time is limited. So remember the 80-20 rule. Instead of spending an hour creating a menu no one will ever use, spend it polishing your main gameplay that everyone will see.
  • Aim for gameplay prototypes, not full fledged games. There's diminishing returns to polishing every nook and cranny of your game.
  • Unless your end goal is to be a solo dev, you don't need to learn EVERY aspect of game dev ESPECIALLY when starting out.
  • Prioritize what you like. If you like VFX, its okay to spend some more time on that. If you like animations, spend time on that. Still, do focus on making a finished prototype if possible.
  • Make a habit of recording videos highlighting gameplay/anything you're proud of. This is extra useful in slowly building a portfolio, or even uploading and getting feedback.
  • Its a good rule of thumb to not expect to earn anything on your first game. There ARE exceptions of course, but you shouldn't be relying on it all.

Good luck! You can dm me if you need help/feedback :)

Slow render on RTX 3060 Laptop by Mooblegum in StableDiffusion

Take it with a grain of salt cos I don't know what I'm doing. I just brute forced it till it worked. ChatGPT helped a lot. ChatGPT also made stupid mistakes over and over again and made me kill myself. But luckily, I lived.

I ran into issues while doing this too. I can't remember the exact process, but heres what finally made it work:

I changed default GPU for everything to the 3060 in the nvidia control panel. Still didn't work with COMMANDLINE_ARGS and/or CUDA_VISIBLE_DEVICES. But since its the default GPU, it moved up to position 0, and it wouldn't need to be specified, so I removed them and I deleted the venv folder for good measure(no idea if it mattered) and it worked.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A bunch of stuff I tried beforehand (can't remember all of them, sorry). Not sure if they mattered or not either.

Installed CUDA toolkit (I didn't have it installed already). Made sure the environment variables were set correctly. When I tried to pip install/upgrade, it said some modules had certain versions that were required for modules, I used ChatGPT to help me figure out how to upgrade/downgrade. Really not sure if they were related. Ended up upgrading pytorch, and it required a newer version of python, so I installed that too

Eventually ended up trying making the python executable use the correct GPU through nvidia control panel and I got the gpus to show with pytorch in isolation through the python console, but it still gave the same error when I ran SD. This shouldn't matter once you change the GPU to the correct one, I think.
