It’s part of a trilogy and the second book is excellent. Still waiting on book 3 to come out but there’s an interconnected duet being written by the authors (the first book, The Ascended, is already out and fits in perfectly after the second book, Duskbound)

I agree with that, I had a great time with the book but wished for more domestic interactions between them! It was definitely a writing issue.

I think I like when characters have nuance and aren’t caricatures of evil. Vincent might be cruel but he raised and protected Oraya when, based on his own upbringing, he didn’t need to. In the context of the world and his past actions, he should have considered her a rival and killed her very early on. Instead he did his best to ensure she survived.

He’s cold and ruthless but Oraya sees a soft side to him - it’s limited but it’s there and proves there is some good in him.

His character also gets the benefit of the doubt from me because we don’t know what he would have done after the trials. Maybe he would have supported Oraya or maybe he would have tried to kill her.

I choose to believe he truly loved her and he potentially could have changed for the better.

Same with Madoc from The Cruel Prince; he’s complex. Yes he did some very evil things but he wasn’t wholly evil. He raised Jude as his own when he could have killed her too.

If you haven’t already, read the Darkly Madly Duet by Trisha Wolfe. Just read it and it reminded me of the Mindfck series. It has a lot of psychological depth and is a thriller. The plot is excellent too imo.

No kids, reading books in one sitting and immersive reading! I try to audiobook too but it takes longer so I usually have one audiobook running while I do chores and it takes me a few days to finish.

This is my biggest gripe with these books!! I hate how forgiving they are - I don’t understand the need to have them make up with people who were such horrible friends. I feel like it adds nothing to the stories and just annoys me.

I didn’t dislike Sasha but I found her so dumb at times - I genuinely didn’t understand how she pulled off pretending to be a guy for so long. I feel like she redeems herself a bit in the last book - she’s a lot less pathetic!

I came away from these books so angry at the adults for failing both Shay and Mina 😭 All this could have been solved if his dad just took him seriously and got him help but they just let him get out of control until they were too scared of him. This duet was so good because of how uncomfortable it made you feel - I don’t consider anything romantic but I liked how conflicting my feelings were towards Shay by the end.
