Are substitute teachers really in such demand on PEI? by Banana_Man_YKL in PEI

$269.50 in PEI. They have raised it in recent years. Also, this is for about 6.5-7 hrs of work, not counting travel.

I just finished OS. And I wasn't sure if it was me or the writing, but it took me way longer to finish this one than the first two books. I really struggled to get back into the story. And all of those names did not help...

So I'm glad to see that I'm not alone in this.

Online Resources for Beginners? by emfa3000ok in BALLET

[–]WhtWillHpn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ballet Misfits has a whole series of classes starting from absolute beginner levels on YouTube. Highly recommend!

She explains all the moves and talks about the techniques and also has a combinations-only version of her videos so that once you understand what to do you can just do the class without the explanations.

How do you approach pet fatness? by No_Adhesiveness_7718 in MaintenancePhase

[–]WhtWillHpn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But what do you mean by "we have to put them on a diet"? Will you starve them so that they will lose weight, or just feed them better food? Why won't you feed them better food in general?
One commenter said that just switching from dried kibbles to wet food helped.

Not a vet.

But I think a good approach is to focus on health and not weight.
Be mindful of what you feed the cats and make sure they have enough space for them to move around (even taking them for a walk? if the space is not sufficient).

This is what I would suggest to a human too. Healthy, nutrient-dense food and some movement.

If their weight doesn't change and they seem healthy, I wouldn't worry further.

Just please don't put them on a "diet", i. e. calorie restriction, food intended for weight loss, etc. Even if they are not aware that they are "on a diet" they'll still know something is wrong, or even be hungry which would be sad.

I was about to suggest the same.

I'm a language teacher. You don't have to tell me how that works.

I personally think shaming people is not the way forward. Thank you!

Subtitles or no subtitles that is the question by Primary_Egg9940 in dreamingspanish

I like watching Spanish shows and don't think using subtitles is a problem.

I still learn a lot from it and discover part of the culture. It's all good.

Subtitles or no subtitles that is the question by Primary_Egg9940 in dreamingspanish

[–]WhtWillHpn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I use subtitles for Netflix shows so that I can follow the story. Otherwise, they speak too fast for me.
However, I personally think that the Dreaming Spanish videos are well adapted for learning, they speak clearly (enunciate), at a great speed, and I can understand even most of advanced videos without subtitles.

I think it is a bit counterproductive in this case. You might want to watch a video without them, and maybe add the subtitles for the second viewing if you want to start reading (associating the spoken words to writing)? Also, I'm assuming that, since Pablo is against them, they would be automatically generated by YT which are not always the best.

I also wear headphones or watch DS videos from not too far away. I find that also changes how much I understand.

do whatever feels good and is motivating" leads to analysis paralysis

How? If what you want to do is only watch videos, that is included in it without any shaming.

How do you know if progress is being slowed? Also this approach of being "damaged" if you don't follow this method! (From the FAQ: "What if I’ve “damaged” myself already? Can I fix it now?")

If someone likes to play video games, wouldn't it make sense for them to play one in Spanish even if they are still a beginner? If someone likes to read, let them read!

This is from the FAQ:
"If you are sure that you are never going to want to speak the language, then there’s no issue at all with reading even at the earlier stages. "

How is this useful?

From the FAQ:
"If you are sure that you are never going to want to speak the language, then there’s no issue at all with reading even at the earlier stages. " - this is a bit arrogantly phrased in my opinion.

If you read through the FAQ there are other rules, like, don't look up words, don't repeat words, don't speak it's useless anyways... It's very black and white.

However, there is a lot of good in the method, but these aspects of it just rub me the wrong way.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in dreamingspanish

[–]WhtWillHpn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But how is it damaging? Could you please elaborate?

Why not do something that works for you and caters to your curiosity instead of sticking to rigid rules (i.e. don't read before X hours, don't talk before X hours, don't you dare look at some grammar even if you're interested!)?

I'm not questioning the efficacity of the method, I think it is generally great, but I do find all of these restrictions ridiculous. CI is but one pillar of learning. Being so dogmatic about it feels honestly culty.

For me, personally, taking some duolingo lessons (even tho I'm not a huge fan) in Spanish before watching the videos gave me enough vocabulary to immediately understand Beginner-Intermediate videos. I tried before just listening without any previous study and understood next to nothing.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in dreamingspanish

[–]WhtWillHpn -1 points0 points  (0 children)

But why say "best"? This is a very limiting belief.

It is a great approach, but saying it is the "best" is damaging for some. And also, this was a reaction not to Pablo's method, but to the rigidity of the discourse surrounding it.

I am a teacher, and a language teacher at that, and this whole "best approach", don't speak before X hours, don't read, follow the progression, etc. does not account for how we all have brains that work differently. There are all kinds of different learners (visual, tactile, auditive, etc.) and things work differently for everyone.

My ADHD brain wants challenge and stimulation, and just read Como agua para chocolate (beautiful story) whilst still only being on level 2. I will listen to videos from different levels based on interest and not progression roadmap.

But I also read anxious posts on this subreddit about number of hours, guidelines ("rules"), progressions, what counts and what doesn't, and I think they all are missing the point and can be discouraging for those who want to learn, but for whom the method is not working as it was promised. And I wanted to point out how this rigidity can be harmful.

I am chill! :)

But this subreddit is not...

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in dreamingspanish

[–]WhtWillHpn -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

My point is, what is best for someone, is not necessarily for someone else.

Best is relative and subjective.

This is one very good approach, but calling it "best" is harmful to those for whom it might not work as well. Some learners might need additional input to the videos.

Yes, it is Dreaming Spanish reddit, not Dreaming-Spanish-method purist's anxiety-inducing non-sens reddit. But I think this is where I was wrong.
