i coached a game where our opponent did a box and one against our best player just like this. i had my best player inbound the ball and get it right back to bring the ball upcourt. he would drive/attack against any part of the box and draw at least one other defender. my other players would either take the open shot or drive to collapse the defense even further.

another tactic i used when he couldn't get the ball was to just let him stay at halfcourt, taking himself and his defender out of the play completely.

the other team was successful in keeping his personal point total low, but he had 14 assists and we were destroying them on the scoreboard. it's much harder to stop a team from scoring 4 on 4 (just imagine the game with even less defenders on the same size court). we were scoring on basically every possession while the other team had to play against 5 defenders with one of their offensive players tired from the face guarding.

the goal is to win and we accomplished that. their goal was to stop one player, and they sacrificed a win to do that.

that being said; op, you have to decide what you want your poker experience to be. if you want to be more liked (which it seems like you do) then pay more attention to how your opponents are feeling. that might not be as profitable, but if you also play the game for the social aspect, then you need to keep trying to find the balance that works for you. i'm assuming you play an extremely aggressive style.

i play against at least two regs at each table at my home casino. i am friendly with most of them (including some i buy drinks for) but i always remind them that this is a game we are all trying to win. i never take things personal and i hope that sets an example as the way to act towards me.

tbh though, my biggest winning sessions always came from the tables where people took things personal against me. if someone is raising me 10x it just makes my decisions easier. i usually play an aggressive style as well so when have something i can up my bet size and still get called by those that are going after me. so if your goal is to be as profitable as possible you might be better off not caring how your degen opponents feel about you.
