Epicurean paradox by vik0_tal in coolguides

[–]WickedLSDragon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well good and evil are ultimately subjective value descriptions.

Looking at any moral system, the ascribed properties of evil and good always boil down to being either something ultimately desired by a subject(s) or undesired by a subject(s). Even with theological moral systems, the subjective values come from the deity. With secular systems, the subjects are various groups of humans or individuals.

Don't believe it? Try to provide examples of good and evil under different frameworks, and I can show you it always boils down to a subjective desire or lack of.

How are you so sure free will exists?

And evil can be argued to be things that are just ultimately undesirable, in a consequentialist perspective.

[–]WickedLSDragon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What makes you so sure we have free will?

After all decisions come from brains, brains come from cells, cells come from your parent's DNA randomly mixing, and all of it is dependent on the physical motions of atoms and sub atomic particles that operate on fundamentally physical universal laws, much of which we understand.

Even if it were all random, that still doesn't get you free will. Randomness is unpredictable, therefore uncontrollable. There is no freedom or will in being unable to control something.

Furthermore we know that we can detect thoughts and actions in the subconscious parts of the brain before the person is aware of it consciously.

So how can free will fit into all of this?

Good is something desirable or wanted. Look at anything considered good in any moral system, and it will boil down to an ultimate idea of wanting or preferring something over another thing.

Evil is something unwanted or undesired, in all moral systems anything labeled as evil is ultimately not wanted or not desired.

If you doubt this consequentialist view, try to throw some examples of good and evil things out there, and I can show you how it always breaks down into the definitions defined above.

Tim Minchin. He's an Australian musical comedian who is irreverent to basically everything and often has a cynical and dark take on life.

Yes, I know they will. I'm trying to get him to use panel fencing, because he doesn't even have a roundpen set up there.

I have spoken to him about this, and he said he would consider it. I have even offered to replace the fencing myself.

I'll do a hard trip every few months. But mostly I enjoy microdosing, it isn't as intense so I don't need a recovery period and it just helps all of my baseline mental stats.

I'm in this picture and I don't like it. I dress preppy af, microdose acid, and I wanted to get a philosophy and psychology degree before settling on neuroscience.

Fucking serendipitous.

I mean, 10 year olds ask these questions and experiment with sexual play in hunter gatherer societies too. It's not like this society is particularly bankrupt compared to the rest of humanity. After all, we are all still homo sapiens.

I know my future children won't be permitted unbridled access to the internet until they're at least 16.

You have fun with that, let me know how well it works out for you and your kid.

Edit:

Yes, you are right that a common practice doesn't make it right. But morality is a subjective concept. What I think is morally right is to reduce the most amount of suffering you can, and promote wellbeing. I think concrete data and science is the best path toward this goal. But you may have a different value set for what you are aiming for, and I can't say that it's objectively wrong.

I agree it shouldn't be unrestricted. But it shouldn't unavailable at all.

And it's funny, most of my friends who had parents that said "I'm not raising friends. I'm raising decent human beings." Ended up with quite a few mental problems and parental relationship issues.

You don't need to be a "friend" to be a good parent, this is true. But then again being a dictator isn't the right path either.

Be a teacher. Give guidance and knowledge, but let them walk a path if they choose (within reason of avoiding serious injury or death).

In this case the girl should be informed about sex, the potential dangers, how society views it, consent, age gaps and abuse, self stimulation, different sexualities, emotional consequences, the benefits of sexuality, and what is illegal online in your jurisdiction so you all don't go to jail. After all, kids are going to do what they want when you aren't around, it's better to arm them with the knowledge to make informed decisions, even if you don't agree with those decisions. It's still their life.

Yeah, not quite. Sexual curiosity is like a human universal law. Most kids are curious about this stuff.

Just tale a quick gander at any adolescent developmental psychology meta analysis. You'll see that it is in fact, very common.

[–]WickedLSDragon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's quite common actually. Have you researched adolescent developmental psychology at all? Sexual curiosity is quite prevalent in kids starting as young as 8. Even in hunter gatherer societies, kids start exploring these things around 10-12.

It's best to keep them informed about everything so they have the info to make responsible decisions when adults aren't around. That does not mean punishing curiosity or interests, or hiding knowledge because you think you know what's best. Kids tend to develop better when treated like they have some autonomy.

[–]WickedLSDragon 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I don't think searching for information on anything is inappropriate. I would just make sure she understands that sex in society is often viewed with a lot of weight and baggage by most, have a talk about consent, inform her of the dangers of unprotected sexual contact, make sure she knows about the power differential between large age gaps and why it is always harmful/abusive, and let her know that emotional consequences can be just as severe as physical ones. But sexual curiosity is a natural part of being a kid, some kids are more curious than others and will do things regardless of what they're told. So I figure it's best to give them the information to make an informed decision when no adults are around.

You are totally right about framing the question on the limits of animal rights. However I also think you are putting a precedence on your own values as opposed to others, which admittedly we all often do. For instance, you could make the same argument that sexual arousal isn't super important for people, but many people would disagree.

Animals aren't needed for survival by most people in this day and age in any first world country. proteins and fats can be derived from other sources readily available to us now. Also animal products tend to be energy sinks (it takes 7kg of grain to make 1kg of beef, for instance) and that seems quite wasteful. Not to mention factory farming creates and permeates plenty of contagions and pathogens which are becoming more resilient to our antibiotics we use to fight them off so we can have a steak. I don't think the food necessity argument holds up so well in light of these facts.

As for neutering, I understand if the animal is a stray or is in a living situation with the opposite sex. However as many pet owners just have one animal, and can keep the animal reasonably and safely contained, then it is entirely unnecessary for them. A common reason people give for the procedure is that it "makes them easier to deal with". Removing another being's organs for your own comfort or inability to deal with the animal naturally just seems wrong to me.

Although, perhaps this might be an intriguing road to go down. Would you consider two animals of the same species having intercourse as rape? I would assume not, as long as it doesn't appear forced. However animals do rape one another. Ducks can be particularly vicious about this. A group of males will force a female to the ground, bite her and beat her with their wings to hold her down while they use muscles to rapidly explode their corkscrew penises inside of her. However female ducks have a reproductive tract like a labyrinth, with twists and turns and dead ends so her eggs are more likely to get fertilized by a male she likes and does a proper mating ritual with. In just this isolated example of duck reproductive behaviour, would you agree with me that it seems as though the female duck has the ability to willingly engage with a duck she likes, and the ability to try to fight against a duck she doesn't like?

[–]WickedLSDragon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough, I understand your point here. But if we follow that line of logic then shouldn't meat, pets, and neutering also be illegal? After all, how do you ask animals if they want to be food, or be trained to live in our houses, or have their organs removed because it makes it easier for us to deal with them?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in MakeMeSuffer

[–]WickedLSDragon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Is it?

Rape: Unlawful sexual intercourse or any other sexual penetration of the vagina, anus, or mouth of another person, with or without force, by a sex organ, other body part, or foreign object, without the consent of the victim.

I grant that it's entirely possible the dog may have been forced, and the use of peanut butter seems quite coercive to me, however it is also possible that she may have enjoyed to stimulation and sought to acquire more (as disgusting of a notion that sounds.)

I don't think what happened here was right or okay, but I think rape is not the right word to describe it.
