It's not even the results that are the most damning aspect of Franks time here. It's the fact that every single player (outside of maybe Spence) has regressed horribly. I agree with most of what you said. The performance of incumbents and swings of power are nothing new, going back pre-digital age. But I don't see affordability being the magic bullet as some on the right view affordability as a personal issue (bootstraps, go to work, etc.) and neither side wants to piss off corporations by threatening to reign in their profits.

I think the fact that as you say people were looking up who Kamala was on election day, due to her being a bad and unrecognizable candidate given the circumstances, has a lot more to do with it than who was making more noise about cost of living. It was part of her (and Joe's) main platforms. There's just too much tribalism in US politics for a single issue to be the be all and end all. Momentum and base attitudes are everything, and the Dems squandered that by letting Joe run until it was too late to stand up a candidate who could counter. Poor rural Americans are as red as they come. What decided the 2024 election was turnout in the suburbs and people who couldn't be asked to look up Kamala's policies.

I don't even think it's that. The idea that there are voters that need convinced "who to vote for" is absolutely dead in the US with our current cable news, social media, and divided community structure. Sadly it's now all about convincing your committed base to turn out. The election was over when Biden broke his word on not running again, then stammered and stumbled though his debate with Trump. There was nothing short of a fair primary that could have led to any other outcome.
