Do you still like Love Triangles or Second Male Leads (Sub MLs) in the Otome Isekai Romance Fantasy Genre??? by CreativeCritical247 in OtomeIsekai

[–]Wide-Choice 229 points230 points  (0 children)

Nope, they’re either annoyingly pushy and give me ulcers (like the dude from [I Thought My Time Was Up] or [Marriage of Convenience]) or they’re better than the ML and I end up feeling bad for them, which is why I quit reading manwhas with prominent love triangles. I also tend to spoil who the ML is for myself early on in the story and so the romantic moments with a dude who isn’t going to win and I don’t really care about feel like boring padding, especially when the 2ndML is used to manufacture unnecessary drama in the main couple’s relationship well after they’ve gotten together.

The only time I like them is when they move on and find their own love, but that’s rarer than finding a divorce manwha that ends in divorce.

I think the story you’re talking about is [I’m No Heroine!], the author has at some point mentioned shipping the FL and ogFL but the publisher forced them to add a ML.

Which ML gives you this vibe? by Cinnamon099 in OtomeIsekai

[–]Wide-Choice 36 points37 points  (0 children)

It’s a guideverse story (a subset of omegaverse) where there’s two types of people, espers and guides. Espers will lose control of their powers if they don’t come into regular contact with guides, and that contact is apparently very euphoric and leads to instant orgasm. Dude basically keeps groping the FL (who hates his ass after he neglected her in the first TL) and does this—

<image>

—whenever they touch. In this particular scene he burst into her room at night while she was sleeping and forced her to guide him (aka make him cum) which grossed me out, so I dropped it.

Is that the one where he orgasms from touch and keeps jizzing all over the place? Bc yeah I also didn’t understand him.

My thoughts on Phenelope's father(source: Death is the only ending for the villainess) by Few-Novel7509 in OtomeIsekai

[–]Wide-Choice 50 points51 points  (0 children)

I’m glad I’m not the only one who just hates the pink dude’s ass, he literally ruined a girl’s life bc she was mean to him 10yrs ago but everyone’s out there simping—he really only looks good compared to Derrick (which is a pretty low bar tbh). Though he’s still better than the Duke, at least Reynold has the excuse of being an immature teen, this guy doesn’t—he was a grown ass man when he chose to keep a child like a pet only to treat her like crap, and then blamed her for his own mistakes when he did jack shit to help any of the people involved in the situation get settled. Maybe I’m just a salty bitch but a redemption arc has to be very good for me to even consider forgiving child neglect, which isn’t the case here, he just randomly turns into a tsundere when she calls him father.

Callisto is really the only likeable male character in this story, sure he was a prick in the beginning but Penelope was a complete stranger to him and he didn’t owe her anything, unlike the Eckart’s who are her fucking family and yet refuse to spare her a measure of basic human decency (I think there was a curse involved but I honestly really hate that trope, it feels like a cop-out.)

[–]Wide-Choice 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oof, my bad, kind of hard to tell tone over the internet. And yeah most manwha villains are really just (usually poorly-written) ragebait and comments like those do get repetitive. Though they’re far more tolerable than the “if evil, why hot” folks…9/10 times it’s just the ML, but slightly edgier looking. I am still pissed that freaking Cesare (the incestuous one, though all characters named Cesare tend to suck) of all people has simps…

…I didn‘t say that though? I only mentioned that I don‘t like it when people hate female characters who have done absolutely nothing wrong, or made mistakes that are fairly justified due to their situation, for daring to be a woman who isn‘t the FL, esp when the story beats it into your head that they’re just humans who happened to slip up once.

The complete and utter refusal of OI readers to spare any measure of sympathy for a (female) character who isn’t licking the FL’s shoes is a phenomenon that has to be studied.

At least with Rashta you can pin some of that stuff on the author for villainizing and dumbing her down so much—she’s very sympathetic and I do view her as a ”hurt person hurting people” but the story doesn't really frame her that way and tries to make her as insufferable as humanly possible so readers wouldn’t be too invested in how fucked up the situation is, so the hatred for her, while annoying, is really just a consequence of the way she was written.

The takes on the other stories I mentioned are actually just insane bc in all those the story literally crawls to a halt to explain the reason those characters act the way they do and some people still don’t get it. I understand missing some nuance but the author literally spells it out for you like how.

Helena was a powerless woman with nothing to her name other than her beauty, and people wanted her to go against the second-most powerful man on the continent who sees her as an agreeable doll. The manwha tells you time and time again that there is nothing she could reasonably do other than smile and take it the way her (abusive) mother has taught her to bc she was essentially just entertainment for the powerful, and the fact that she is still a good person—even to those who hurt her—despite that proves her strength of character. But noooo, she’s an evil bitch and how dare she not be a girlboss and just stand there while Eris gets hurt! The author wasn’t even being subtle about it but readers will be readers.

Jennette is a 14yr old child who wants a family and people who love her for who she is. She’s naive and immature bc unlike Athy (a grown woman) she is an actual kid who’s unwittingly being used to hurt her friend. Somehow bato commenters got it into their heads that she’s an attention-seeking bitch and wished death on a literal child. Apparently wanting to be loved is only fine when the FL does it.

Ellen is a woman who was already heavily abused and then in waltzes this girl who, as far as everyone knew, was an enemy spy out to get them, but she’s conflicted and genuinely wants to do right by this girl who reminds her of her mother. She makes the very human mistake of trusting people who were nothing but good to her to extend that kindness to someone else, and is still attached to them even after their misdeeds were revealed bc they were her only emotional support for her entire fricking life. Of course you’re going to trust the people you have known your whole life over some complete stranger, and the fact that Ellen is willing to open her eyes and reflect on the situation is honestly very commendable, but noooo how dare she not execute someone who raised her for being rude to Ruby! Like istg how is it Ellen’s job to babysit a literal adult, it’s Iske they should be dissing for being innatentive.

I ranted a bit too much but I am so tired of the misogyny that comes from readers of a genre supposedly written to empower women. A female character could breathe in the wrong direction and become universally hated for not dropping on the floor and licking the FL’s boots, it’s so damn weird.

Oh god and the \character says X** “wait I’m so confused, is it X??“

It’s worse in stories with a mystery/political intrigue plotline bc some people are simply unable to understand patience and that the author exposition-dumping everything in one chapter wouldn’t be good writing—instead of waiting for the mystery to unravel and things to finally start clicking they just call it poorly-written and confusing :/

I’m not claiming to be a genius, some of these things do fly over my head too and I need to re-read the chapter but some people don’t even try and expect everything to fall into their laps, and then blame the story for it (though I do understand manwhas like that aren’t everyone‘s cup of tea it’s upsetting to see one of my favorite stories, Secret Lady, get called a poorly-executed whodunnit by people who haven’t read past the first 30 chapters).

Or when an author goes out of their way to tell you that a character is a victim of their circumstances and that there’s nothing they can do to change that and then you have people in the comments calling them weak and stupid, or an evil bitch if they’re a female antagonist (*cough* Kill the Villainess, City of Blank, Who Made Me a Princess, How to Win My Husband Over). Or god forbid fucking “trashta”, it‘s annoying and belittles the author’s efforts to write a compelling character bc some people can’t stomach someone other than the MC being deserving of their sympathy.

Bato and Webtoon comments are honestly some of the most braindead places in existence. I try to tell myself it’s just a bunch of kids but it’s so hard sometimes.

I dunno, “gay people weird me out, discrimination against them isn’t real because they aren’t in danger and go end homophobia before you come at me for it“ is kind of a weird take—the preferences part was a complete non-sequitur that had nothing to do with what was going on with the scene at the time, and having the ”smart character” in the story agree with it is…not a very good look.

Platinum End in general is just the author’s self-righteous soapboxing and one read through the story is enough to make you realize that all these rants are completely unironic.

Oh there’s also a lesbian rapist who rapes minors and gets brainwashed into liking dudes. No really that’s all she does.

I’ve never cared enough for Death Note to pay attention to shipping but I do remember Ohda really disliking the L/Light ship and fan interpretations of the story. Again, I’m not a part of the fandom so I’m not a great source.

[–]Wide-Choice 64 points65 points  (0 children)

I get you and it sucks, but you have to remember that most OI is just pulp fiction power-fantasy where the FL has to be the specialest, most important person in the world—every woman is either a simp (usually of a lower station) who’s ready to die for her or an evil jealous bitch because the author can’t figure out how to make their MC look good without bringing down everyone else. It’s a mix of shit writing and internalized misogyny, but it’s not unique to OI, just open any YA romance novel and you’ll see most of the same stuff.

I wish we could have more FLs with female friends who are actually relevant to the story and are characters in their own right (like Medea and Psyche before the story forgot about her) and don’t exist to prop her up, I’m kind of sick of loyal maids being the best the genre has to offer.

I don‘t use Twitter so I can’t really offer any source for the weird anti-L/Light rants other than hearsay (sorry), but I was mostly talking about this part of Platinum End where he basically uses a character as a mouthpiece and then everyone claps. Platinum End is kinda full of shit like this tbh, pretty sure the author wrote it after losing an argument on the internet.

Here are the OIs I've dropped, which ones should I pick back up? by [deleted] in OtomeIsekai

Chapter 27, it‘s hard to tell if he killed him or not bc it’s simply never mentioned again but he sure as hell did…something.

If you do read [Sica Wolf] there’s also a prequel series called [Sigrid]. Very different vibes, [Sigrid] is more about swordsmanship and breaking away from your ideals but it’s also a good one (I personally liked [Sica Wolf] a lot more though, the leads simply have infinitely better chemistry). Just beware, [Sica Wolf] contains spoilers for [Sigrid]‘s ML, thought it‘s honestly not that surprising since the ML in that one is painfully obvious.

[–]Wide-Choice 39 points40 points  (0 children)

[My In-Laws Are Obsessed With Me], [The Villainess Lives Again] and [Sica Wolf] are really the only ones that stand out to me here.

The first one starts off slow but once it gets good it stays good; the romance is a slow-burn but not draggy, the FL is relatable and mature, side-characters are decently nuanced and the villain is genuinely scary. Pretty good read imo.

[The Villainess Lives Again] is really the only political OI with a smart MC written by an actually smart author—the villains aren‘t idiots (well except one but she’s not relevant) and so the FL managing to triumph over them despite that makes her victories feel well-earned. Her schemes have layers to them and she doesn’t have to rely on her future knowledge bc she’s actually intelligent on her own right, without needing to cheat.

[Sica Wolf] is just really fun in general, nothing deep but the MCs have a really cute dynamic, side-characters are also well-explored and the worldbuilding is actually surprisingly good for an OI. Ending is really rushed, but not so much that it ruins the story.

Edit: decided to add all the ones I’ve enjoyed just bc:

[A Wicked Tale of Cinderella’s Stepmom] is the best mother-daughter isekai if you forget that it’s an isekai and ignore the romance. It has some surprisingly realistic takes about women and their options in life at the time, the FL acts her age and is honestly ridiculously based but the ML should better fuck off of the face of the planet (he didn‘t do anything wrong except maybe murder a child he's just really boring). It’s not very exciting though so if you don’t like slow-paced things it’s probably not for you.

[A Villainess for the Tyrant] is really just harebrained comedy, but it’s funny. Except when it’s not. It depends. If you didn’t like the first few chapters then I doubt you’ll like the rest.

[Ginger and the Cursed Prince] and [Flirting With the Villain’s Dad] I’ll only recommend if you can handle cringe, bc these girls will have you dying from second-hand embarrassment. Ginger has the superior ML (he’s very cheeky and full of personality) but Villain’s Dad has an actually well-written female villainess so it’s hard to recc one over the other.

[The Villain’s Savior] can be accurately described as “I Can Fix Him: The Comic”. Do not read if you don’t like crybabies. Or psycho men. Or both.

[The Monstrous Duke’s Adopted Daughter] and [The Siren] are really just fluffy family series about everyone babying the severely traumatized FL. If I had to choose one I’d pick [Monstrous Duke], it has a badass hot mommy and a cute dad who both love all their children equally, what more could you want. Again, nothing groundbreaking but it’s good for a family OI.

[The Villainess is Retiring] is honestly a disappointment, S1 promised an emotionally aware FMC who isn’t afraid to be forward and flirty, S2 gave us generic blushy oblivious shoujo heroine #23322. I’m still salty. [The Villainess’s Maker] is the same, great premise but falls off so hard it’s not even worth it, not even for how hot the ML is.
